NOVELLO'S LIBRARY FOR THE DIFFUSION OF MUSICAL KNOWLEDGE.

IV. MOZART'S SUCCINCT THOROUGH-BASS

SCHOOL. Translated from the German, by SABILLA NOVELLO. The musical examples revised by JOSIAH PITTMAN.

[Former price, 7s.] In paper wrapper, Iod. London: J. Alfred Novello, 69, Dean-street, Soho, and

24, Poultry; also in New York, at 389, Broadway. Brompton, Dec. 18, 1854.

DEAR SIR,-In reply to your question as to the circumstances connected with the origin of Mozart's Succinct Method of Thorough-Bass, I have to say, that in an interview which I had with the Abbe Stadler at Vienna, in 1827, he informed me that such a work was written for his niece by Mozart. This young lady was Mozart's pupil in pianoforte playing and harmony; and friendship for her, and for her uncle, made him undertake the task. I am pretty certain that together with a portion of the manuscript sheets of the Requiem, which the Abbe showed me, I saw also those of this little book; the former work, of course, from its great interest, has the stronger hold on my memory.

However, of the authenticity of the Thorough Bass there can be no doubt. I believe that a little book published at Berlin, under the title Kurz Gefaszte Methode der General Bass von W. A. Moxart, is the work in question.

To some it may appear improbable that so great a master should undertake such dry labour; but not so to those who know the facts of Mozart's history and the great benevolence of his character. In his day there were no books of harmony which taught compendiously all that was necessary to be known of the due proportion of intervals, and the correct designation of the notes of chords; each master taught as he could by tradition. It is a fresh proof of Mozart's comprehensive power in all which appertained to his own art, that he could condense in a few brief pages, on the spur of the moment, everything that the treatment of the subject required. The execution is eminently practical, without the expenditure of a single superfluous word.

The venerable priest who showed me the manuscripts, though past his 8oth year, had a countenance glowing with animation while he spoke to me of his friend Mozart-the composer and the man.

I am, dear Sir, yours very truly, .A. Novello, Esq.. E. HOLMES.

Completion of the work. SIR JOHN HAWKINS'S GENERAL HISTORY OF

THE SCIENCE AND PRACTICE OF MUSIC. Price 355., bound in Two Volumes. Supplementary Volume

of Portraits, 14s., in paper covers; i6s., bound in cloth. N the present age, when public attention is so extensively

directed towards the study and practice of Music, it has been thought that a new edition of SIR JOHN HAWKINS'S valuable HISTORY OF MUSIC would prove peculiarly ac- ceptable, as being by far the best history of the art extant. It was formerly a very scarce and expensive book, but the present price, 35s. bound in two volumes, places it within the reach of both amateur and professional musicians. The large subject of a History of Music, embracing heterogeneous matter, and the result of wide research, makes it a storehouse to which a defi- nite clue is required to give ready access. This will be found in the new and compendious Indexes, which have been care- fully compiled, and added to the present edition. The whole matter occupies more than 1ooo large pages of close print, with more than 200 wood-cuts, and provides the material for many a long winter evening's amusement by their perusal.
