Bacteria . . . . What are they??

1. Prokaryotes (pro means ____!)2. Unicellular (only one _______)

3. In the Kingdom Eubacteria and Archaebacteria

Here’s what they look like!!

Sometimes we want to INOCULATE bacteria

Inoculate – what the heck does that mean?

It means that you streak some bacteria onto a petri dish that contains a special “medium” (aka: nutrients) so they can grow and reproduce!

Bacteria are classified by their SHAPE

Coccus are ROUND

Bacillus are ROD SHAPED

Spirillum are SPIRALS

YIPEE!!!

HOW CAN BACTERIA HELP US?

There is a special bacterium named Eschericia coli (now let’s chant it!)

Eschericia coli lives in our intestines and helps us digest our food.

• Name the genus and species of Eschericia coli

But when E. coli gets into our food it can make us very, VERY sick.

What is the number one way we can keep from getting food poisoning?

COOK FOODS PROPERLY!!!!

What types of diseases are caused by bacteria?

Diphtheria (sore throat, coughing)Staph infection (skin disease)Strep throat (throat disease)Food poisoning (digestive disease)

What does DIPHTHERIA look like in a patient?

Infected tonsils, causes fever, red sore throat, weakness, and headache. The toxin destroys the normal throat tissue, causing the throat to swell.

YIKERS!!!

What can we do to prevent disease?

VACCINES!!

Vaccines are killed or weak bacteria injected into the body

Why do they work?

VACCINES make the body form antibodies (killer cells) that can fight the bacteria if it ever invades. It makes the body ready!
