2 The pronoun (anta) is added here for emphasis. It is not necessary to add the pronoun when replying (i.e. asking them

but you can do it. And adding another pronoun like this into an ( كيف حالك after they have asked you كيف حالك

expression brings emphasis.

3 This is not the legislated (مشروع ) salaam that Allah revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (صلى هللا عليه و سلم ),

consult the ulama of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa'ah before incorporating this expression into your speech. و هللا أعلم

5 When ال is added to a word, the word becomes definite (specific). Ex: أخ - a brother, whereas األخ means – the brother.

Notice also that when a word takes ال , it no longer has tanween (two dammahs, two fat-hahs or two kasrahs) – it now

only has one dammah, one fat-hah, or one kasrah.

6 It is not correct to simply say Maa shaa Allah when you admire someone. But you need to ask Allah to bless that person.

This is based upon the hadeeth collected by Ibn Majah in which the Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) said :

فليدع له بالبركة إذا رأى أحدكم من أخيه ما يعجبه ، “When one of you sees from his brother something he admires, then let him make dua for barakah (blessing) for him”

and this is done by saying بارك أللهم -” O Allah, bless (it)”. See article here:

http://www.sahab.net/forums/showthread.php?t=373191

7 Bukhari mentioned in his Saheeh from Abu Aaliyah who said: The Salaah of Allah upon His Messenger is His praising

him in the presence of the angels. و هللا أعلم

صة هللا على رسوله ثناؤه عليه عند المئكة: ذكر البخاري في صحيحه عن أبي العالية قال 8 it means that هللا في السماء :has numerous meanings depending on the context. And when used in this expression في

Allah is OVER the samaa – meaning He – The Most High – is above all that exists (as Shaikh Fawzaan mentioned in his

explanation of Imam Ibn Taymiyyah's Aqeedatul Waasitiyyah)

9 This can also mean “you (m.sg) are reading/reciting”

13 1st month of the lunar (Islamic) calender. Shaikh Muhammad Ali Firkous says that what is correct is to say “Al

Muharram” المحرم as this is how al-Muharram is mentioned in the ahaadeeth ( i.e. it is mentioned with ال , unlike the

other months. See article here: http://www.salafitalk.net/st/printthread.cfm?Forum=10&Topic=11834 )

15 The 2nd person singular masculine verb form in the present tense is the same as the 3rd person singular feminine. So

will either mean “You (m.sg) sleep” or “she sleeps” depending on the context. This is not something difficult, as تنام

the context will tell you which one is meant. Ex: أين فاطمة؟ هي تنام and متي تنام يا عادل؟16 is added to the present tense to form the future tense س

19 Or “She is eating”

20 In this context, طلب means “to order”, but it also means “to seek” - the طالب العلم is the one who “seeks” knowledge

21 This is ال ناهية "The prohibitive ال " . It renders the verb مجزوم which means for some of the verb conjugations that

they take a sukoon on the last letter

22 We just learned that the prohibitive laa makes SOME verb conjugations take a sukoon – so why does this one take a

kasrah? Well, actually, the laam still has a sukoon. But they are teaching you a pronunciation rule. When a letter

(which is not م ) has sukoon and is followed by ال ، then it takes a kasrah IN PRONUNCIATION. That is why

sometimes you may see a letter written with both a kasrah and sukoon

Page 11: Baina Yadaika Vocabulary Book 1 · How are you (f)? ِﻚُﻟﺎَﺣ َﻒْﻴَﻛ How are you (m) (lit.: How is your situation)? ؟َﻚُﻟﺎَﺣ َﻒْﻴَﻛ And how

23 If you want to say for example “One orange” you would add ة and say برتقالة .Likewise, “one fish” is سمكة24 This is from the verb حلب which is “to milk an animal”

25 This can also be “she prays” depending on the context

26 This is from the verb وضع . To form the command, take the 3rd person masculine singular form (present tense) which is

.and put a sukoon on the last letter – this is for the 2nd person m.sg ( ي ) take off the first letter , يضع

27 How to form the command for this type of verb: (a)Take the 3rd person m. sg. form (present ) which is “ Take (b) " يقرا

off the ي and replace with alif (c) the alif will either have kasrah or dammah (for these types of verbs) in the command.

If the middle letter (here it is ر ) has a fat-hah or kasrah, then the beginning alif will take kasrah (d) put sukoon on the

final letter (here it is أ ) and you will have the command for the 2nd person masculine singular

28 This is from the verb أكل . To form the command, take the 3rd person m. sg. form (present) which is يأكل . Now, because

this is a verb which begins with a hamza أ then you will take off both the ي and the أ which leaves كل . Then put

sukoon on the last letter and you have it.

29 How to form the command for this type of verb: (a)Take the 3rd person m. sg. form (present ) which is “ Take (b) " يكنس

off the ي and replace with alif (c) the alif will either have kasrah or dammah (for these types of verbs) in the command.

If the middle letter (here it is has a dammah, then the beginning alif will take dammah (d) put sukoon on the final ( ن

letter (here it is س ) and you will have the command for the 2nd person masculine singular

30 There are patterns for forming the command and the pattern will differ a bit depending on what type of verb it is as well

as if it begins with a hamza or has a weak letter ( و، ي، ا ) anywhere in the root.

31 .a present tense verb is “so that I may/can...”. It is usually used in conjuction with a verb which comes before it + ل

Example: أدرس اللغة العربية ألفهم القرآن "I study the Arabic language so that I can understand the Qur'aan” . Notice

how adding ل to the present tense verb makes it mansoob (you will learn more on this later in shaa Allah)

32 If you are a woman, you say آسفة 33 lit. he is a goer, but – هو ذاهب is literally – I am a goer. But you would translate it as – I am going...Likewise أنا ذاهب

you would translate as “he is going”

34 Jumaadaa is the name of the 5th and 6th month in the lunar calendar – جمادى األولى و جمادى األخرى أو الثانية

definitions for “match”). It also means “to come” in this context: متى حضرت من اليمن . Learning to define words by

listed in Madinah Book 3, chapter 1 . This grammar rule is expounded upon in ch.28 (book 3). In the answer key (for

ch.28), it mentions: “d) as a substitute for the verb. In this case only the masdar is used, e.g., صبرا 'Have patience!' Here

the masdar (صبر ) is the substitute for the amr [command] اصبر – [Likewise] شكرا [thank you]...is a substitute for

the mudari' [present tense] أشكر 'I thank.'” Also in chapter 28 (book 3) : يجوز حذف عامل المفعول المطلق الدال علىIt is allowed to drop the doer from the maf'ool mutlaq which" النوع و العدد، نحو قدوما مباركا أي قدمت قدوما مباركا

(executive) capital (seat of the President) (Scholastic Atlas of the World, p.189, in the “Search and find” box).
