    Bajkos Celebrate 50th Anniversary

Paul and Dela Bajko celebrated their 50th weddinganniversary on June 16, 2001

  • Dela's Story - by Lois Harris

The Story begins on October 22, 1920 when Dela Burghardtwas bom to a Russian mother and Polish father. The familymoved from Russia to Poland when she was ver> young. Russian was spoken in the home so Dela became fluent in Russianand Polish at a young age. German was studied in the schoolsand during the war she learned more. In 1945 the Burghardtsleft Poland and entered a camp in Germany for displaced persons. The Russians were occupying Poland and it was too perilous to stay. It was in the camp Dela met Paul Bajko, son of aPolish minister. Paul was forced to work for the Germans in alabor camp during the war and found himself in the displaced

persons campat the end ofthe \yar. Theywere engagedin 1946.

Dela immigrated toEngland towork and then

on to Canada with her family. Paul entered the USA tostudy at Eastern Christian Institute in New Jersey. In 1951they met again to marry in Canada. Paul returned to ECI tofmish his final year and then returned to Canada for his family which now included a daughter, Yvonne. A year atMilligan College finished his degree and they returned toECI to teach and there began the Department of Missions.

They never forgot their friends in Poland or the needsof the people there. Over the years they have sent clothingand other goods as well as recorded programs to be broad

cast there. Songbooks have been translated for useby the Polish churches. Funds have been raised torebuild churches and educate ministers. The remnant left in Poland at the end of the war has survived and is doing well in the 21st century. Thereis much yet to be done, but strides are being madeto get the churches to become self-supporting.

Paul and Dela are still very active in the mission work of PCM. Paul recently wrote a history ofthe Churches of Christ/Christian Churches in Poland. Dela and Paul work together in publishingthe Polish magazine "Drogowskaz" monthly.

New OfficeNew Telephone /Fax NumbersMost of our readers and supporters are probably not aware that

PCM never had an office outside of the homes of Paul Bajko andWayne Murphy. While the work of the mission has functioned well inthose environments for 47 years, it is time for more space. EffectiveJuly 11, 2001, we have an office at the Fair Meadov '^s Campus(formerly Eastern Christian College). This permits us to expand secretarial hours and provide additional work and storage space. Paul Bajko will continue working from his home, adjacent to the campus.Wayne Murphy and Lois Harris will be working at the new office location. Please note the new telephone and fax numbers. Some of youare still using the old "P.O. Box 629" address. The post office is nolonger forwarding mail from that address.
