BAKER BULLETIN VOLUME 14 * ISSUE 3 3500 AGUALINDA BLVD. PH: (239) 458-6690 CAPE CORAL , FL 33914 FX: (239) 458-6691 Dear Baker Families and Communities, Happy Holidays Bulldogs and future bulldogs! We hope that everyone had an enjoyable and restful holiday and are so excited for the second semester to begin. With this said, we would like to remind everyone of a couple of school events and procedures. On December 6th we held our first AP Capstone Night. This night explained our academic program that is continuing to grow each year. This program is equally rigorous to the Cambridge and International Baccalaureate programs. We invite all prospective students to research the AP Capstone Program and if you would like additional information, please feel free to contact us or attend our School Choice Open House where additional information will be provided. On January 10th at 5:30pm we will be hosting our School Choice Open House. During this time, prospective students will be able to tour our school and see all of the programs we offer such as our academies, sports, clubs, as well as our academics. Our school is the original comprehensive high school of the West Zone due to our Academies in Audio/Video Technology & Communication, Applied Information Technology, Automotive, Building Construction, Engineering & Technology, Fine & Performing Arts, Leadership (AVID & JROTC), Marketing/Business, Medical, and Public Service (Criminal Justice, Education, & Firefighting). The start of the second semester means a fresh start on attendance. Per the School District Code of Conduct, students shall be counted in attendance if they are actually present at school at the time the attendance is taken or are away from school on a school day and engaged in an educational activity that constitutes a part of the school-approved instructional program for the student (Section 1003.23, Florida Statutes). We enjoy having your child at Baker and want them to be successful. Their attendance is critical in order for this to happen. When your child is absent it causes them to fall behind and lose instructional time that is valuable to their educational success. We understand that there will be a time when your child may be absent from school. When a student is absent and the absence is determined to be an excused absence, as defined by School Board Policy 4.16, it is required that the student make up all course work missed. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain assignments from the appropriate teacher(s) upon returning to class immediately following an absence. The student will be given the number of days absent plus one (1) additional day to make up all work missed for full credit. Please refer to the Ida S. Baker Student Attendance Policy in the Student Handbook. Again, from all of us at Baker High we would like to wish you and your family a joyous and successful 2019. Thank you for entrusting us with the safety and well-being of your child. • All students are expected to be on time and present each day school is open during the

school year.

• Student may not be absent from school without permission of the principal/designee.

• The school principal or designee is the only person authorized to excuse a student’s absence.

• A note from a parent/guardian is a request that a student’s absence be excused.

• When a student accumulates an excessive number of absences (5 days in a calendar month or

10 days within 90 calendar days) and additional absences occur which are caused by illness,

a written statement from a physician verifying that the absence was caused by an illness may

be required by the principal to be submitted by the parent/guardian (School Board Policy

4.16).

• Students who fall into this category will be placed on an Attendance Contract. The contract

is sent home with the student for parent/guardian signature. The contract explains the loss

of privileges and what needs to be done in order to earn the privileges back. When a student

is placed on an attendance contract the following privileges are lost: Homecoming Dance,

Prom, Parking Permit, and Grad Bash.

• Habitual tardiness is defined as six (6) or more tardies to school or to an individual class per

quarter.

• Lack of school attendance may also result in loss of credit.

• For enforcement of compulsory school attendance, three unexcused tardies or unexcused

early sign-outs may, at the discretion of the school principal, be considered equal to one day

of absence.

In the morning, for parent drop off, there are 2 lanes that can enter the building at the north gate. The two lanes allow for traffic to flow at a constant pace in order for students to enter the building on time to school. Please remember that since there are two lanes if you are in the outside lane, please watch for signals from school staff in order to stop and allow students to cross in a safe manner. In the after-noon, we have 1 line of traffic that enters at the north gate. According to the City of Cape Coral Police Department, cars cannot wait in the turn lane across the street from the school in order to enter the school. The north gate is opened at 1:15pm, allowing ample time for cars to get in and pick up their child(ren) in the afternoon. Please arrive by 1:15pm or later to pick up your child in order to come straight into the school and avoid violating the No Parking signs on Agualinda Blvd. Our goal is for everyone to enter and exit our building in a safe manner. Please obey all traffic regulations. 3
