Ballina North Tipperary Intermediate Hurling Champions 2013At long last, Ballina are North Tipperary

Intermediate Hurling Champions. After somegood times & some bad times for club players,mentors, officials, members & supporters,

Sunday 25th August proved to be the day ofreckoning. Ballina beat Shannon Rovers inNenagh in the Final.The Final Scoreboard

Ballina started very brightly & were 6points to no score up after 10 minutes. At thisstage everyone was doing their bit and all was

looking good.However as expected Shannon Rovers

came right back into the game and points wereexchanged on both sides. By half-time Ballinastill led by 0-12 to 0-7. Both sides had missedchances in the half, but Ballina were deservingof their lead.

Both sides resumed the second halfswapping points. Shannon Roverswere running at the Ballina goal,

but their final pass let them down

on a number of occassions. At the other end,Ballina missed a few chances. 4 unansweredpoints between the 43rd & 56th minute putBallina 0-19 to 0-11 clear. This period of

dominance proved critical.Shannon Rovers Captain George

Hannigan started the game at full-back, but hemoved to full-forward towards the end &finished a goalmouth scramble to the net, tomake the final few minues a tense affair. However another point, followed by thelast score of the game a goal from EoinSheehy meant victory was secure & the FatherHewitt Cup was coming to Ballina.

After the game in his acceptancespeech, captain David Hickey spoke for anentire parish when he spoke of the hard workthat went into achieving this success.

against Ballinahinch Gaels (Ballinahinch & Newport)in Round 1 of the championship.

This championship will commence in thecoming weeks and will be run on a Knock-out &Losers Group basis.

Minor HurlersOur Minor Hurlers are Through to the North

Final. On Tuesday 3rd Sepember they beat ShannonRovers Gaels (Shannon Rovers & Knockshegowna) inPuckane in the semi-final. This was a close gamethrough, but Ballina took over in the last Quarter toreach the Final.

Prior to that they beat Lorrha/Dorrha in theQuarter Final & won 3 of their 4 group games.

Ballina met Burgess in the group stages inBallina. That game was low scoring and eventhroughout, but Ballina eventually won thanks to alate flurry of scores. Since then Burgess have put upbig scores and were big winners over Templederryin the Quarter Final & Silvermines in the other semi-final. Another close game is expected.

With Ballina through Good Times & BadBallina GAA club is presently in a healthy

state with success on the field following huge

efforts off the field. Things werent always so

good & in this edition of the club newsletter we

feature Tom Ahern. Tom has been with the clubthrough good times & bad.

Tom (on right) receives a presentation for his work forhandball locally & nationally

Ballina stalwart Tom Ahern is married toVera and has one son and five daughters.

Tom has served many roles in club andcommunity over the years including Vice Chairmanof Ballina GAA. Tom also has a distinguished careerin handball administration including Chairman ofNorth Tipperary, County Tipperary and MunsterHandball Boards. Tom currrently serves asPresident of Ballina Handball Club.

In his time watching handball, Tom wouldrate Ballina's Connie & Anthony Collins as well asPat Kirby of Clare as amongst the best he has seen.

Tom Ahern attended his first All-Ireland in1949 and hasnt missed too many since.

The best Gaelic Footballer that Tom hasseen would have to be the one and only, Valentia'sfinest - Mick O'Connell. Thurles Sarsfields provides

the name of the greatest hurler in Tom's view - thePremier's finest, Jimmy Doyle.

Tom's earliest highlights with the clubinclude the 1967 Junior Hurling Final which Ballinawon and Tom was a selector.

The connection runs right up to the presentday when one of Tom's proudest days was when

Ballina won the North Intermediate Title and hisgrandson Adrian Power was sub-goalie for theteam.

Tom even tried his hand at the greyhounds,getting involved with Tom Hayes training the dogsfor coursing. A significant highlight was when a dogthat Tom was handling & training (Tender Hillside)won the Oaks Final in Clonmel in 2000.

Strictly Come Dancing event in March next year in

Lakeside Hotel in mid-March in the club final with

Field DevelopmentWith regards to the new field the tender

process for the construction has been completedand negotiations are at an advanced stage. It is

hoped that construction will commence thisAutumn. This will put a big strain on club financesand we are looking for as much support as possiblefor our Buy a Sod campaign.

For the second year running Ballina GAA isrunnung a Sports Predictor Quiz.

Itsgives an extra interest and does add tothe enjoyment of all of themajor sporting eventsthroughout the summer,while of course you are

are sent each week orafter each event so youcan see how you are doingand watch out for upcoming events.

Therewas 55 entries in 2012 & this jumpedto 82 in 2013.

The race to the top is still open, with All-Ireland champions still to be decided in SeniorHurling and Football, as well as Minor Football.

We have 3 or 4 people near the top & whoknows what will happen between now & the end ofthe month.

We also held a very successful Pig-on-a-Spitnight as part of the Ballina Killaloe Bar-b-Quefestival in O'Donavans on Friday 30th August. Musicwas by Nenagh Mint, many thanks to Mike andMairead for hosting the event.

The Fr. Hewitt Cup made its way to thisoccasion. A great night & great food was enjoyed byall.

Juvenile Club

Under-6sThe U6 coaches have been getting big

crowds again this year with 30+ attending manySaturday mornings (10:00-11:15AM). In a relativelynew move at this age, the coaches have beengetting challenge games for the lads which is goingdown very well indeed. Many of the boys aregrowing visibly in skill and confidence and theenjoyment is obvious. The next generation startshere!

Some Busy Under-6s

Under-8sThe "serious business" that is U8 hurling

has been very eventful in 2013. The boys haveplayed 12 matches this year and there have beensome eye-catching displays of skill and bravery. The

skill level on show at this level is very impressiveand the boys are looking to improve and learn all thetime. One of the highlights of the year was an U8blitz played in Durlas g on a sunny May morning.These boys literally can't get enough hurling and it'swonderful to see!

Under-10sThe U10 boys have a big squad (35+

registered). They had a wonderful run earlier in theyear in the Community Games Football, where theBallina & Boher boys (& girls) won the right torepresent Tipperary in the Munster Final in Tralee.

After a huge battle the lads lost narrowly toMonaleen of Limerick.

Recently, the focus has been 100% onhurling. Last Sunday was all about Clare and Cork inthe All Ireland Hurling Final.

Next Sunday, the U10 boys have their ownAll Ireland when they go head to head with Newport,Portroe, Clonlara and our near neighbours SmithO'Brien's of Killaloe. It promises to be a great day'shurling - you might see the next Anthony Nash orPodge Collins there! The action gets underway inBallina on Sunday 15th September at 11:00AM.

Community Games Under-10

Under-12sThe U12 boys have had a very long

competitive campaign this year contesting a NorthFootball Final and winning a North Hurling Final.

The football got underway in early April andafter a shaky start, the lads simply blew Borrisileighaway in a semi-final to earn the right to play Lorrhain the North B Football final. Unfortunately we came

up against a superior force on the day and Lorrhawere well worth their seven point victory on the day.No sooner was that over than the hurling

started. The North Board decided to put A and Bteams together in one group of 10 teams so the ladshad nine group games. At the end of the groupphase we had tasted defeat on a number ofoccasions including v Nenagh and Roscrea, butvictories over Kilruane, Kildangan, Lorrha and

Borrisiliegh were enough to put us in a semi-final vLorrha. Victory in the semi put us into a final vToomevara. It's always a big ask to beat Toomevaraand that final was no different. Huge credit to theboys for the way they battled to keep their lead andgrind out the win and the North Title.

Under-14sThe U14 boys also had a great football

campaign in 2013, bringing a North Title to the clubalso after a huge second half performance vSilvermines. At half time in the final, it looked likeBallina had it all to do but great credit is due to theboys and their coaches as they stuck to the task andgot their noses in front facing the home strait.

As with the U12s it was straight into hurling

action for the lads where they bowed out at thequarter final stage.

Under-16sThe U16s had a very impressive group

campaign in the football with some big victories.Perhaps they were not challenged enough in thegroup stages as they faced an altogether different

challenge in the North semi-final v Burgess. Ballinastarted in a whirlwind with great football being playedfrom 1-15. Credit to Burgess, they rallied strongly inthe second half and the lads struggled to keep pacewith them. Though Ballina qualified for the NorthFinal, divisional honours eluded them.

Unfortunately our U16s lost out to NewportGaels in the North A Championship Quarter Final.Great credit is due to the U16 boys - who trained at8AM on many mornings - for the manner in whichthey went about their campaign. They were on thewrong side of some big scorelines early on but gottheir campaign back on track late on and wereworthy of a place in the knock-out stages.

like?

Training on Fridays & Sundays in Ballina &Wednesday's in Dublin

You have 6 or 7 team mates in Dublin - Is it that

much harder on you lads with a small amount

training together & all the travel?It can he hard travelling down home each weekend,

but the lads (management team) are also coming uphere midweek to train us, so everyones making a

huge effort.

All that training paid off 2 weeks ago; how did it

feel when final whistle went?

Unbelievable, worth all the heart break over the past

few years.

What about remainder of year, what are the

hopes?

Take it game by game and hopefully well still be

there on County Final day

You are playing in the backs this year after

spending your playing career as a forward. Are

you enjoying the new position?

Yes Im enjoying it at this stage, Im starting to getmore confidence, but if I move any further down thefield I'll end up in goals or on the bench!

Which is your favourite position?I still consider myself a forward, but I've had more

success so far as a wing back!

What are the different requirments?

Need to be way fitter as a back, its more physicallydemanding

Your big brother is back there with you, does he

offer any advice or orders?

He gives me plenty of grief, but is a great man tomarshal the defence

Ballina Camogie Club

Feile Na nGaelFeile Na nGael was held in Limerick this

year over the weekend of 5th/6th/7th July. Ballinawere invited to host a team & here is a report on a

great weekend for the club.The Ballina camogie club capped a

memorable Feile weekend by winning the Dvision 4Final in the Gaelic Grounds. The girls produced aterrific performance of skill and determination tosee off the challenge of Na Piarsaigh on a scoreline

of 4:03 to 0:02.The Feile weekend gotunder way on Fridayafternoon when wewelcomed our visiting team

from Sligo to Ballina. Theteams then played the firstgroup game of thecompetition with our girlscoming out on top. OnFriday evening both teamstravelled to Limerick andparticipated in the Feileparade, along with another190 teams, which was agreat occasion.

On Saturday morning we travelled toMungret to play two further group games. The first

was against MacCumhaills the Donegal champions,followed immediately by a game against the hometeam. These were two hard games made tougher bythe intense heat on the day. The girls came through

with two victories setting up a semi-final onSaturday evening against Causeway from Kerry. Thiswas our hardest match of the weekend. We fellbehind early to an unstoppable goal from ouropponents. Eventually the girls settled and got ontop, with the scoring prowess of our forwardsproving crucial in a 3:03 to 1:02 victory.

The final in the Gaelic Grounds was a greatoccasion. We had great support on the dayincluding our visiting team from Sligo who got fullybehind us and came to cheer us on in both thesemi-final and final. After going behind by a pointearly on, Ballina started to dominate the game. Firsthalf goals from Lauren Gough, Maeve OLeary andSophie McGrattan along with two points from AnnaConway put us in a strong position at the break. Asecond half goal from Maeve OLeary and a superlate point from Laura Storan closed out the game.

Our joint captains Michelle Lotter and LauraStoran proudly accepted the trophy on behalf of theteam and the club. The whole squad gave their allover the weekend. Our goalkeeper Hazel McMahon,

allied with stellar performances from our backs,conceded only 1:06 over the five games that weplayed. Our midfield worked tirelessly while theforwards fought hard throughout and got the scoreswhen needed.

Finally, a very special thank you to ourmascot Sarah Dunne, who cheered us on allweekend.

In a tight and tense semi-final againstBurgess on Wednesday 4th September, Ballinacame out on top by 4-02 to 3-04. The teams werelevel at half-time.

BallinaHandball Club 2013

Ballina Handball Club are having another

very successful year capturing North, County,

Provincial & National titles.

In Juveniles James Prentice teamed up with

Justin Cahill from Lahorna and they won the U1440x20 All-Ireland title. James despite picking up a

serious injury during the season captured the 1 Wall

title in the annual Lurgan I wall Tournament and is

teamed up with Colin Ryan from Cashel where they

travel to Kingscourt in Cavan to contest the U14

60x30 doubles All-Ireland semi-final against Killian O

Reilly & Conor Owens from Cavan in Kingscourt on

Sunday 15thSeptember @ 12 O Clock.

In the Adult Grades Ballina players were

also in great form when Ger Coonan & Fergal Collins

captured the Intermediate doubles 40x20 All-

Ireland title in OLoughlins in Kilkenny beating

Kildare 21/12, 21/6.

Fergal Collins & David Hickey won the 60x30

All-Ireland Intermediate title on September 7th in

Williamstown in Galway beating Mayos Stephen

Cooney & Ian Mc Loughlin 21/7, 21/20.

Fergal will contest the Intermediate Singles

final in Broadford in Limerick against StephenCooney from Mayo on Saturday 21stSeptember.

Martin Mc Inerney & John Lee contested

the All-Ireland final of the Masters B Doubles 40x20

in Moycullen in Galway but were narrowly beaten in

the Tie Break 21/18.

Coaching of Juveniles daily at the Ballcourt

from 1.45 Pm 6 Pm. In both 60x30 & 1 Wall

courts.

GAA highlights from your own playing / admin

career:

Hurling in the Harty Cup with St. Flannans.Unfortunately I had fairly limited success withBallina, each year had some highlights butultimately ended with disappointment and regret. Its

great to see that the Intermediates have changed thatsequence this year!

Earliest GAA memory:Watching my father hurl with Ballina, in jerseys that

looked like they were for the U12s!

Favourite Memories from playing / watchingBallina:

When I was fairly young I remember watchingPaddy Kennedy block down someone, he broke hishurley in the process and when his opponent (cantremember who they were playing) rose and went tohit the ball again, Paddy blocked him with this bare

hands, your man again went to rise the ball at whichpoint Paddy shouldered / wrestled him him off the

ball and then proceeded to stamp the sliothar about afoot into the ground so the other lad couldnt get it.The ref then just threw the ball in and Paddy with a

new hurl won the throw in. Im still not sure ofwhether this memory stuck because I was so

impressed by what I had just seen or because I justplain scared of Paddy after seeing what he had

done!!

Best GAA moment in your life:Clare winning the All-Ireland in 1995.

Other sports liked/played:

Play (and lose) 7 a side soccer on a weekly basis.My cousin Declan who also lives over here plays as

well (hes useless!).Enjoy watching Rugby.

Involved with GAA abroad - who & how:Havent played with the GAA club over here. They

mainly train for and play football which wouldntever have been one of my stronger codes!

What is the big difference between home &

abroad:Weather!Interacting a lot more with other nationalities, for

some strange reason they seem to have difficultyunderstanding what I am saying!!!

Favourite other sports person:

Roy Keane, purely for entertainment value!
