County Champions:

Under-12 Footballers Ballina had two teams in

action in the County Under-12

football Finals in Templetuohy

on Saturday 17th May.

U12 Football Group 4: The Blue team who are

all still underage for next year

went down fighting to an

exceptional Clonmel

Commercials side. It was a

huge credit to these boys to

contest the county final and they

will take stopping next year.

Well done to these young

players.

U12 Football Group 2: High drama as the red

team faced a mobile and skilful

Grangemockler/Ballyneale side

who dumped a classy Golden

side in the county semi final.

The lads had failed to

score in the first half against a

strong wind but out of

somewhere they found it within

themselves to make a breath

taking comeback scoring 1-08

without reply to win the county

final on a 1-08 to 1-06 scoreline

in the company of their watching

parents, supporters and parish.

The late, late goal which was

greeted with whoops of delight

and relief came with normal time

almost up.

Congratulations boys

you are the toast of Ballina.

Heroes all of them. Well done to

their coaches Eoin, Adrian,

Eamonn, Nigel and Joe.

Ballina Juvenile Club: Thank you to Mairead

and Michael O'Donovan Brian

after match reception for the

u12 footballers after their

County win.

U14 Football Ballina played Kilruane

MacDonaghs in the North

Under-14 Final on Thursday 15th

May. Unfortunately on the

evening they came up against a

very good MacDonaghs side.

At half-time, Kilruane

led by 2-4 to 0-3 & continued

their dominance in the second

half winning by 6-6 to 0-5.

The boys in blue gave it

their all, but just came up

against a better side on the

evening. Well done to the lads &

selectors. This team also

reached the North Feile Final.

Well done to Kilruane

on their deserved victory.

Review of some recent

U 6, 8 & 10 Activity: Under-6:

The U6 hurlers made

the short journey across the

bridge to Smith O'Briens to play

them in a challenge game on

Saturday 14th June. Every child

got a game and enjoyed it

throughly.

Under-8:

Travelled to Dolla on

Saturday 14th June to play a

hurling blitz. The boys played

really well and produced some

great hurling playing against

Nenagh Eire Og, Burgess and

Silvermines.

Béal An Átha Review sunshine from the U8 hurlers as

they clashed swords in the field.

Three 8 aside games took place

and were very competitive

against an excellent mines side.

They were also out on

Saturday 31st May in Dr. Morris

Park in the Tipperary

hurling blitz against Durlas Og,

Solohead and Upperchurch.

Well done to the coaches and

these young players and future

stars of our club.Well done to

all.

At the end of May, the

boys played Templemore in a

highly entertaining football

match played in tough windy

conditions they played some

great football in a close game

but lost to Templemore who

were worthy winners in the end.

Under-10:

They have been busy

with challenge matches

recently. Last week the

travelled to Clooney-Quinn and

also to Smith O’Briens with

strong performances on both

nights. Well done to all.

The hurlers travelled to

East Clare on the previous

Tuesday to take on Scariff. The

lads put in an excellent display

and shaded it against a strong

home side. Well done to the

lads and their coaches. Wishing

Jack Collins a speedy recovery

from injury.

Under-12 “C” Hurling: Ballina’s second team

are in a very strong “C”

championship. With the

exception of Roscrea, this

young side is coming up against

first teams all the way.

Senior Hurling Ballina played 2 games

recently in the North Tipperary

Senior Hurling Championship.

On Sunday 18th May,

Silvermines provided the

opposition in Nenagh. The

‘mines made the early running

and led after a quarter of an

hour. However, Ballina goaled

at this stage and went in at half-

time in a good position. Ballina

dominated the third quarter

and seemed set for victory, but

Silvermines hit back with 2

goals in quick succession to take

the lead & time nearly up. The

heads never dropped & Ballina

got the two last points to record

a historic victory 1-18 to 2-14.

All round 1 winners,

then faced a round 1 loser in

round 2. Ballina’s opponents

were Moneygall in Nenagh on

Saturday 7th June.

Despite being short a

number of regulars, Ballina

performed well & were ahead

at half-time. Approaching Full-

time, Ballina were still on top,

but Moneygall struck for late

score to leave the game level

(Ballina 2-15, Moneygall 1-18)

at full time.

Moneygall had the

better of exchanges in the

opening half of extra time &

this ultimately proved vital.

Ballina had chances at the end,

but Moneygall prevailed by 1-

24 to 2-19.

Ballina, Moneygall,

Portroe & Toomevara all

entered the hat for round 3

(Won 1 & lost 1 of first two

games).

Mo

neygall &

Toomevara

received

byes, while

Ballina

were

drawn

against

Portroe.

5

teams won

both their

opening round games and they

are into the quarter finals.

Ballina

also have

one game

left in the

county

champions

hip (V

Ballingarry).

Group winner will be

promoted to Roinn I 2015.

Group Game in the Junior “B”

Hurling League.

This meant Ballina topped

the group and qualified for a

This game was played in

Ballina on Friday 30th & proved

to be a great game. At the end

of 60 minutes, the sides were

level – Ballina 2-12, Kildangan 0-

Hazel McMahon took part in

half time of the Limerick v

Tipperary game.

Sam Loughran is going to

represent Ballina on the

Primary games football team

when Tipperary take on Cork on

Saturday the 21st June in Cork.

Great to have two players from

our Club representing their

county in the primary games.

On 4th of May both the girls

and boys school team took on

teams from neighbouring

schools of Killaloe and

Portroe. The sun shone on

what was a great day for hurling

and camogie. There were over

eighty boys and girls playing,

with some great displays of skill

and ability. Well done to the

girls and boys, teachers and

helpers.

Thanks to the club for allowing

the blitz to take place in the

field. It is hoped to make this an

annual event.

hopes to hold

Béal An Átha Review NEW PITCH

Construction work is

now well under way on the new

pitch. The bulldozer, diggers

and dumper trucks brought in

by the contractor, who is a

specialist in pitch construction,

have completed most of the

heavy excavation work and the

hill (of rock) that dominated the

land is now well and truly gone.

Next up for the

contractor is to install the

drains that will run under and

around the pitch. After that

they will lay the topsoil and

sand to form the new pitch

surface. Unfortunately, the soil

that currently forms the nice

embankment along one side of

the pitch will be used.

It is expected that the

pitch will be seeded and the

contractors work will be

complete in 3-4 weeks, all going

well on the weather front.

The new surface will then need to be carefully protected for the next 12 months or so to ensure the grass gets adequate time to bed in and grow. It will need to be well established before it is able to take the stress of training and matches. The next stage of the development this year will be to provide more secure fencing around the boundary of the new pitch. It is hoped to do as much as possible of this using
