AUGUST HORSE MOVIE SERIES PLANNED TO BENEFIT NYSRPS
SARATOGA – In celebration of both the Spa City’s Centennial and The New York State Recreation and Park Society’s 75th Silver Anniversary, NYSRPS is hosting the first of its kind out-door horse movie series Monday evenings in August. Mark your calendar for the final film to be shown, National Velvet on August 24th at SPA State Park / Victoria Pool. Movie begins at dark and are free of charge to the public. The New York State Recreation and Park Society, Inc. is a 501-C (3) not-for-profit organization that assists park, recreation and leisure service professionals with support services to provide valu-able programming for local park, recreation, therapeutic and community centers across NY.
YOUTH PARKING PROGRAM HELPS SUPPORT RECREATION DEPARTMENT
SARATOGA SPRINGS – The youth parking program will begin collecting parking fees at the lower deck of the Spring Street parking garage located in downtown Saratoga Springs. The program, which is operated by the City of Saratoga Springs Recreation Department, raises money to help support the recreation department. SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM OFFERS
FREE LUNCH BALLSTON SPA – The mem-bers of The First Baptist Church of Ballston Spa and Ballston Spa United Method-ist Church are actively prepar-ing for their 2015 Summer Lunch Program. This program is designed to provide free lunches to children of fami-lies in need. This program has served the local Village of Ballston Spa for the past four years. With the help of gen-erous grants from Stewarts, Adirondack Trust Co., and do-nations from local businesses and organizations we are able to continue this program into its fourth year. Approximately 140 lunches are served Mon-day thru Friday, July and Au-gust. Nutritious and freshly bagged meals are prepared by church members and lo-cal volunteers and given to each child in attendance that might otherwise go hungry. Any assistance is welcome and the program is seeking volunteers. Volunteers can sign up through The First Baptist Church, 885-8361 or on the church website, bspa-baptist.org. Permission forms are required for children to participate in the program. These forms are available at the church or on the church website. I’m still impressed at how quickly the days get shorter this time of year. We’re losing daylight at a rate of almost 3 minutes a day! It adds up day after day. There are signs of fall everywhere. The asters are just beginning to flower in the meadows. The cats are more interested in visiting with us overnight now. There’s dew on the windshield and lawn every morning. I’ve noticed the Monarch Butterfly migration is in starting up. The hummingbirds will be gone soon. All these are indications that our glorious growing season will be coming to a frosty end. You would think that this would be a quiet time for gardeners. Not at all! There will bulbs to plant and it’s a great time to plant trees and shrubs that are on season end clearance at the garden centers. Cool weather makes it a great time to catch up on any lingering landscaping projects. Most of us have more time to devote to garden tasks this time of year. In spring, with all the preparation for the vegetable garden, raking the lawn and other pressing chores, it can be hard to find time to keep up. Rainy spring weather can also make it difficult to accomplish all you wish to. Many of the gardening chores that you’d normally think of doing in spring can actually be taken care of now. One task that I like to tackle in now is the dividing and transplanting of perennials. Most of our perennial flowers are just about finished for the season. They go dormant as frost approaches. This is a great time to make improvements and adjustments to our flowerbeds and borders. You may have underestimated how large a plant would get and need to move it. You may have some perennials that have become mature and need to be divided. This is a great time to take advantage of cool, crisp “work weather” to get a jump on next spring. For instance, I’ve got some daylilies and hosta that are in need of dividing. It is a good idea to have the new location ready to receive your transplants before you lift them from their present spot. Dig you holes and add you soil amendments. The most important soil additive is bone meal. Bone meal (as I’ve stated many times before) provides phosphorus to promote a strong, healthy root system and it lasts in the soil for several years. If you have sandy soil, the addition of compost or peat moss will improve the soil’s ability to retain moisture. Next, slice all the way around the plant you wish to divide with a sharp spade and lift it from the soil. If you’re simply moving it to a new location simply plant it and water it in well. If you need to divide the plant, simply slice the clump apart (as with hosta) or gently pull the clump apart (as with daylilies). Sometimes this seems a bit brutal but remember, most perennial plants NEED to be divided every few years to remain healthy and vigorous. Remember your gardening friends when you’re dividing your perennials. I always set a few small divisions aside to share. My friends share with me so, there’s always something new for all of us to enjoy.You might not think of it but it’s also a good time to purchase and plant potted perennials. The selection of perennials won’t be as good at the garden center in fall as it is in spring and summer but what there is will undoubtedly be on sale. I’ve got some great bargains by being willing to poke through the perennials at the garden center in fall.

CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joyful Noise was a con-temporary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young people, led spiritu-ally and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Mu-sic Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate passing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the rec-ognition, that still, “We are One”. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will culmi-nate with a barbeque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethle-hem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Saturday night service who supported each of us during our “JN” years. (StatePoint) If you work out a couple times a week, you are on the right path to good health. But experts say this can and should be just the beginning of your fitness journey.
“Our bodies are designed to be fast, powerful and agile,” says Paul “Coach” Wade, fitness expert and author of the new book “Explosive Calisthenics.” “However, modern Americans have become the slowest, least agile members of our species in all history.”
Wade says a vanishing percent of people even attempt to un-lock their body’s full athletic potential. To help, he is offering tips to take your overall fitness to the next level.
Ditch the Excuses
Getting in great shape requires consistency, and it’s all too easy to make excuses for missing a workout. Whether you’re always on the road or can’t afford to renew your gym mem-bership, Wade says such excuses don’t hold water.
“While modern training methods involve equipment like bar-
bells, balls, boxes and gymnastics gear, the superior way of building maximum speed, power and ability is the old-school method of using just your body’s own weight, nothing else,” he says.
Whether you’re crunched for time or crunched for space, don’t let these circumstances prevent you from getting a great workout. Pushups, squats, leg raises, bridges and jumps are just a few fundamental exercises that can be performed in a small space without any gear.
Ditch the Fear
Traditional calisthenic moves used by gymnasts, martial art-ists, athletes and tumblers -- such as flips and kip-ups -- may seem intimidating. But Wade says that most people have the inherent ability to master such moves by working on each one in progressions.
“Movements like these have been handed down from gen-eration to generation,” he says. “They should not be the exclu-sive domain of gymnasts.

Don’t try to take shortcuts. Successful athletes don’t leap
ahead and tackle moves they aren’t ready for -- they find ways to make the stuff they can already do work even better for them.

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER
CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Again we are full up with kittens and cats. We have been trying to save as many from the local kill shelter as
we can. We have many different colors and coats. All our kittens have been

Buster is a little Chihuahua that was on death row hoping someone would get
him out of that scary place. We saw his picture and could not let him go so here he is. He is about 1 year old, vet checked
and up to date on shots.
Chocula is another little chihuahua who ended up in a high kill shelter
when his owners could not take care of him. He is such a good boy the shelter
asked us if we could rescue him and we said yes. He is vet checked, up to date
on shots and more.

Safety should be a priority for carpoolers, and drivers can take the following steps to ensure kids get to school safely.
• Know the laws regarding safety seats as they pertain to age, weight and height.
• Each child will need to ride in a seat that is appropriate and shortcuts should not be taken. If there isn’t room in the vehicle to sit all children comfortably and in the proper restraint, then you must reduce the number of passengers in your vehicle.
• Children should ride in the backseat of the vehicle as a priority. Many kids can be safely moved to the front seat around age 13.
• Instruct children to remain in their seats until the car has come to a complete stop. Only then should they remove their seat-belts.
• Make sure students enter and exit the vehicle on the curb side instead of on the street side.
• Instruct passengers to keep their hands and heads inside of the vehicle. If necessary, engage child locks on doors and windows.
• Do not leave a child alone at an empty home in the afternoon. Wait until you see a child go inside his or her home before you drive away.
• Keep the radio low and minimize distractions while driving oth-ers.
Carpooling is a great way for parents to share the responsibility of getting kids to and from school.

How To Stop It
One way to do that, according to study.com, is to reduce tail-gating, especially by young drivers.
The Hartford Courant found the most common “contributing factor” noted by police in crashes caused by new drivers was following another vehicle too closely.
Most crashes where tailgating was the primary causal factor happened between 2 and 3 p.m., about the time high school classes are done for the day.
In other words, the typical crash caused by a 16- or 17-year-old driver doesn’t involve a car careening off the road during a boozy, late-night joyride.
The Cause
Tailgating is so high on the list of accident causes because stopping involves more than just applying the brakes. It also includes perception time (realization that you need to stop) and reaction time (moving your foot to the brake pedal). At 60 mph, by the time the vehicle begins to slow down, it will have traveled more than 130 feet.
Most drivers know they should maintain a minimum of three seconds between a car and the vehicle in front. However, de-pending on factors such as vehicle condition, size and type,
speed, time of day, road and weather conditions, and visibility, the time it takes to fully stop can vary dra-matically. For ex-ample, a wet road can quadruple the time required to fully stop, and increasing speed from 35 mph to 55 mph nearly dou-bles the required stopping distance.
What You Can Do
If you find that another vehicle is tailgating you, remain calm and don’t let ego get in the way of safety. Do not slam on your brakes, honk your horn or use angry gestures. Instead, if there is an alternate lane, safely move over so the other car can pass. If you can’t move over, slowly increase the distance between your car and the one in front of you. That way, if the tailgater hits you, you’re less likely to hit another car.
Most rear-end crashes occur in the afternoon when school is letting out.
