I’m still impressed at how quickly the days get shorter this time of year. We’re losing daylight at a rate of almost 3 minutes a day! It adds up day after day. There are signs of fall everywhere. The asters are just beginning to flower in the meadows. The cats are more interested in visiting with us overnight now. There’s dew on the windshield and lawn every morning. I’ve noticed the Monarch Butterfly migration is in starting up. The hummingbirds will be gone soon. All these are indications that our glorious growing season will be coming to a frosty end. You would think that this would be a quiet time for gardeners. Not at all! There will bulbs to plant and it’s a great time to plant trees and shrubs that are on season end clearance at the garden centers. Cool weather makes it a great time to catch up on any lingering landscaping projects. Most of us have more time to devote to garden tasks this time of year. In spring, with all the preparation for the vegetable garden, raking the lawn and other pressing chores, it can be hard to find time to keep up. Rainy spring weather can also make it difficult to accomplish all you wish to. Many of the gardening chores that you’d normally think of doing in spring can actually be taken care of now. One task that I like to tackle in now is the dividing and transplanting of perennials. Most of our perennial flowers are just about finished for the season. They go dormant as frost approaches. This is a great time to make improvements and adjustments to our flowerbeds and borders. You may have underestimated how large a plant would get and need to move it. You may have some perennials that have become mature and need to be divided. This is a great time to take advantage of cool, crisp “work weather” to get a jump on next spring. For instance, I’ve got some daylilies and hosta that are in need of dividing. It is a good idea to have the new location ready to receive your transplants before you lift them from their present spot. Dig you holes and add you soil amendments. The most important soil additive is bone meal. Bone meal (as I’ve stated many times before) provides phosphorus to promote a strong, healthy root system and it lasts in the soil for several years. If you have sandy soil, the addition of compost or peat moss will improve the soil’s ability to retain moisture. Next, slice all the way around the plant you wish to divide with a sharp spade and lift it from the soil. If you’re simply moving it to a new location simply plant it and water it in well. If you need to divide the plant, simply slice the clump apart (as with hosta) or gently pull the clump apart (as with daylilies). Sometimes this seems a bit brutal but remember, most perennial plants NEED to be divided every few years to remain healthy and vigorous. Remember your gardening friends when you’re dividing your perennials. I always set a few small divisions aside to share. My friends share with me so, there’s always something new for all of us to enjoy. You might not think of it but it’s also a good time to purchase and plant potted perennials. The selection of perennials won’t be as good at the garden center in fall as it is in spring and summer but what there is will undoubtedly be on sale. I’ve got some great bargains by being willing to poke through the perennials at the garden center in fall.

Open to everyone, the lunches served will be a simple sandwich lunch with fruit and veg-gies, drink, and dessert. At the lunch there will be an oppor-tunity to help other people, also. A special table will be set aside with fabric to be cut into squares to be made into small quilts for City Mission, Birthright, and nursing homes. Come for the food, stay for the fellowship.

PELTS & PROSPERITY - SCHENECTADY’S FUR

MERCHANTS 1730-1776

ROTTERDAM JCT. – Pelts & Prosperity - Schenectady’s Fur Merchants, 1730-1776 - presented by Nolan Cool on Saturday, August 29, 2:00pm. Admission: $5.00, free for members of the Schenectady County Histori-cal Society. Join Utica Col-lege student Nolan Cool for a presentation of his senior thesis. Several Schenectady residents bartered in furs during the 18th century. However, only an elite class of merchants prospered from their involvement in the trade. Learn more about how businessmen adopted and adapted their economic position to fi nd success in the fur trade from New York’s western frontier. For more information, please contact Educator/Assistant Curator Jenna Peterson Riley at [email protected] or 518-887-5073. The Mabee Far m Historic Site is wheelchair accessible, with off -street parking in front of the George E. Franchere Educational Center.

Chocula

Again we are full up with kittens and cats. We have been trying to save as many from the local kill shelter as

we can. We have many different colors and coats. All our kittens have been

vet checked, are up to date on shots, Feline Leukemia

tested and more.

Buster is a little Chihuahua that was on death row hoping someone would get

him out of that scary place. We saw his picture and could not let him go so here he is. He is about 1 year old, vet checked

and up to date on shots.

Chocula is another little chihuahua who ended up in a high kill shelter

when his owners could not take care of him. He is such a good boy the shelter

asked us if we could rescue him and we said yes. He is vet checked, up to date

on shots and more.

THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE” CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joy-ful Noise was a contemporary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joy-ful Noise was a large group of young people, led spiritually and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Music Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate pass-ing of key members, has stirred

interest in a reunion of The Joy-ful Noise, with the recognition, that still, “We are One”. A re-union is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will culminate with a barbeque din-ner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the

parents and family members in the Saturday night service who supported each of us dur-ing our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are in-terested in help locating former members, and identifying folks to assist on various committees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Christian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]

WONDERFUL HOMES NEEDED FOR WONDERFUL ANIMALS

CAPITAL DISTRICT – Capital District Humane Association, Inc. (CDHA.NET) is an all-volunteer, no-kill animal rescue group that has been saving animals of all kinds throughout the cap-ital region and beyond since 1988. Our goal is to place each animal in our program in a wonderful home where it will be treated like a valued member of the family. We re-home dogs with no charge for surrender. Since CDHA is a rescue group and doesn’t have a facility of its own, all its dogs are in foster homes and dogs are showcased at pet adoption clinics held three times each month.

US NAVAL SEA CADET CORPSCAPITAL DISTRICT – This is a program for young men and women ages 11-17 who are interested in developing skills in Leadership, Seamanship and Military Discipline. VISION SCREENINGS vs VISION EXAMS

by Lawrence Cusma, OD9 Gleason Road

Scotia, NY 12302

EYES ON HEALTH

For further information, call our office at 399-6368

It has been estimated that by the year 2028 - the year when kids entering kindergarten this fall graduate from high school - most schools will rely even more heavily on visual and digital technology in the classroom. This makes it imperative that all children have regular access to com-prehensive vision care, and not just a “vision screening”. According to a recent study by the American Optometric Association, our nation’s past reliance on vision screening programs has lessened a child’s access to needed vision care by as much as 72%. And when vision problems are missed during these inherently flawed vision screenings, children are often misdirected into Individualized Educa-tion Plans (IEPs) and/or ADHD treatments. The children and their parents are left unaware that they actually need vision care. Since most of the classroom learning comes via the visual pathways, nearly all tasks a child is asked to perform in the classroom depends on good visual skills; visual skills assessed through a comprehensive optomet-ric exam, and which are NOT assessed through vision screenings. This results in early reading difficulties and often to special education classification.

At Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region we understand that having the best vision possible is important

to living your life to the fullest. With the latest technology and

treatments, over 200 years of combined clinical experience,

and specialists in Retina, Glaucoma, and Neuro-Ophthalmology. You can trust your vision to us. • Complete Eye Examinations

CAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots organiza-tion that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired Ameri-can Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a state-ment the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tat-

tered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Vet-erans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded War-riors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to

our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Dona-tions are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More information can be found at www.StarsFo-rOurTroops.org or contacting [email protected].

That’s because insurers typically offer bulk rates to policy holders willing to insure several vehicles and/or drivers on a

single policy. But such discounts typically adhere to guide-lines that dictate eligibility. For example, if the head of a family wants to insure his or her children on the same auto insurance policy he or she has, then those children typically must list their parents’ home as their legal residence. Blood

relations also may influence eligibility for multiple driver policy discounts. In general, only blood relatives or relatives by marriage can benefit from multiple driver discounts. How-ever, non-related motorists who jointly own a vehicle may be eligible for discounts.
