Indian Meadows Ice Rinks Are OpenGLENVILLE – The Town of Glenville skating rinks at Indian Meadows Park, 155 Droms Rd., are now open. of another horticultural genius, Luther Burbank. Burbank introduced over 1,000 plant varieties that had never been seen before. His achievements were so astounding that he was initially considered a fake by the established scientifi c community. Time would prove them quite wrong in their initial assessment.
Let’s start at the beginning. Luther Burbank was born in rural Massachusetts in 1849. In 1871, he used an inheritance from his father’s estate to buy a 17 acre farm in Lunenberg, Massachusetts where he took up vegetable farming for a living. An avid reader and forward thinker, Burbank was fully convinced by the writ-ings of Charles Darwin and his theories on evolution. When one of the potato plants in his garden produced a seed ball (rare for potatoes), Burbank was astute enough to realize that it would contain seeds that would NOT breed true to the type of potato that had produced them. He let the seed ball ripen and found that it had produced 23 seeds. He grew the seeds hoping that he might come up with a new variety. As things turned out, one of the seeds produced a white skinned potato that was much larger than its red skinned parent. Burbank sold the potatoes he’d produced to a seedman from Marblehead for $150.
The seedman was thrilled and went on to make a considerable amount of money from the “Burbank Potato” which was far and away the best variety ever produced.
With his newfound funds and tempted by tales in letters from his two brothers in California, Luther sold the farm and took ten of his new potatoes and set out across the continent. Burbank’s new potato variety not only provided him the funds he needed to travel and a bit of a name in the agricultural community, but gave him a great deal of confi dence that there were many new discoveries to be made.
Burbank arrived in Santa Rosa and shortly after read Darwin’s recently published “The Effects of Cross and Self Fertilisation in the Vegetable Kingdom” which further inspired him to the possibilities of plant breeding that lay before him. At this time in California, there was a lot of interest in producing dried fruit for shipment back east. While California could grow huge amounts of produce, refrigerated transportation hadn’t been invented yet so farmers there concentrated on crops that could be dried before shipping. A banker in Santa Rosa wanted to get in on the boom and offered $6,000 to anyone who could provide 20,000 prune trees in 9 months; a feat considered impossible by local nurserymen. Burbank devised a plan to graft plum buds onto faster growing almond seedlings. The idea was a success and Burbank stunned locals and earned the $6,000; a tidy sum in 1882. With this money, Burbank purchased some land and a cottage and began plant breeding in earnest.
Ten years later, Burbank had enough new stock to offer plants for sale in a mail order catalog. When his catalog came into the hands of eastern and European nurserymen and botanists, it created quite a stir. Bur-bank’s catalog offered over 100 plant varieties from fruit trees to fl owers that had never been seen before…all produced by a single man! Burbank offered a walnut tree that grew as fast as a softwood, an apple that was sweet on one side but sour on the other, a new giant form of daisy (Shasta), and even a cross between a strawberry and raspberry. The offerings were so outlandish that most believed the catalog to be a hoax.
A Dutch botanist, Hugo De Vries, was so intrigued that he immediately set sail for America and traveled all the way to Santa Rosa to see for himself. Even before De Vries reached the front door of Burbank’s cottage, he knew that there was something special going on. In the front yard was one of the amazing walnut trees Burbank had developed. De Vries had expected a much larger facility with a great deal of scientifi c re-search going on. Instead, he found Burbank in his cottage with sparse notes scribbled on bits of paper scattered about. Because of Burbank’s unscientifi c methods, he had a hard time getting the scientifi c community to take him seriously (all but those who actually visited Santa Rosa).
What amazed all that did visit was Burbank’s uncanny ability to recognize individual plants from among thousands that would eventually suit his goals. One county agricultural agent commented, “ He’d go along a row of gladioli, yanking out the ones he didn’t want as fast as he could pull them up. He seemed to have an instinct that told him if a tiny plant would grow up to bear the kind of fruit he wanted. I couldn’t see any difference in them, even if I stooped and looked closely, but Burbank did no more than glance at them.”
Gradually, the world embraced Burbank for the genius he was. Like George Washington Carver, Burbank seemed to have a special communication with plants and admitted that he talked to them to offer encouragement and his love and admiration. He admits that they probably couldn’t understand his words but believed that they could sense his feelings and desires for them. This seems as outlandish now as it did then. Helen Keller, after visiting Burbank wrote, “He has the rarest of gifts, the receptive spirit of a child. Only a wise child can understand the language of fl owers and trees.”
Burbank expressed his philosophy this way, “Preconceived notions, dogmas and all other personal prejudice and bias must be laid aside. Listen patiently, quietly and reverently to the lessons, one by one, which Mother Nature has to teach, shedding light on that which was before a mystery, so that all who will, may see and know. She conveys her truths only to those who are passive and receptive. Accepting these truths as suggested, wherever they may lead, then we have the whole universe in harmony with us.”
George Washington Carver and Luther Burbank were strange and amazing men whose philosophies could be easily dismissed as pure hokum were it not for the fact that they each achieved amazing results that advanced agriculture decades in a few short years. Cupid is a symbol of Valen-tine’s Day, but many do not know how this winged match-maker came to be associated with the holiday.
Do you believe in love at fi rst sight? How many friends or relatives have said they met their dream guy or gal by a chance encounter of eyes meeting across the room? Perhaps Cupid played a role -- shooting his arrow and fi nd-ing a target.
Cupid is represented in sever-al ways. But the best-known image of Cupid is a winged, naked boy shooting arrows to join potential lovers together. Cupid has two types of arrows he can set sail. Gold-tipped arrows are what links people in love. However, Cupid also has a devious side. He can fi re lead-tipped arrows, which cause people to feel hatred. This side of Cupid is little-known.
Cupid is the son of Venus in Roman mythology. Greek myths called him Eros, and he was the son of Aphrodite. Stories say that Venus, the goddess of love and beauty became jealous with a mortal woman named Psyche. She ordered her son to punish the mortal. However, Cupid be-came enamored with Psyche and married her instead. But being a mortal, Psyche was not able to look at her hus-band. She resisted until one day her sisters persuaded her to look at him, wondering why he’d want to hide him-self from her. Upon doing so, Cupid punished Psyche by leaving her and making all of their belongings vanish.
Psyche wandered looking for her lost love. She eventually came upon the temple of Ve-nus and wanted to plead her case and apologize. However, Venus was still jealous of Psyche. Venus ordered her to complete dangerous tasks to try and win back Cupid, in an effort to destory the mortal. In one of her tasks -- a visit

to Pluto in the underworld -- Psyche failed and fell under a deadly slumber. Cupid was beside himself, found Psyche and rescued her. Both Cupid and Venus forgave Psyche. Eventually the rest of the gods -- moved by Psyche’s devo-tion -- made her a goddess.
Today Cupid is the mascot of Valentine’s Day. His mis-chievous or devious nature is downplayed, and he is best known as an adorable match-maker with heart-tipped ar-rows. You can evoke Cupid
this Valentine’s Day by draw-ing arrow-pierced hearts on steamed-up mirrors in the bathroom for your mate to discover. Or send Valentines with hearts and arrows as the theme.
Many early Christian martyrs were named Valentine, which can make it confusing when trying to fi gure out just who is being honored on Valentine’s Day. While there might be many martyrs named Valentine, the two honored on Valentine’s Day are Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni. The former was a Roman priest who was martyred in roughly 269 AD, while the latter was bishop of what is now Terni who was martyred in 197 AD. It was not until the 14th century that any of today’s popular romantic elements began to take shape when celebrating Valentine’s Day. As a result of those new de-velopments, the distinctions between Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni were gradually lost, eventually prompting the feast of St. Valentine on February 14 to be removed from the General Roman Calendar in 1969.

After the thrill of wedding fes-tivities dies down, couples often jet off to a honeymoon retreat and begin an entirely different adventure. The honeymoon may create mixed feelings, some concerning the chance to spend time alone after months of plan-ning and a few feelings of anxi-ety over spending the fi rst night together as a married couple.
For many couples, the honey-moon wedding night is the fi rst time they are intimate together or it holds a special meaning of being intimate for the fi rst time after being married. Such sig-nifi cance can put pressure on a happy and natural experience.
Wedding jitters are normal, as are honeymoon and wedding night jitters. But just as wedding trends have changed through the years, so, too, have beliefs about the wedding night. Knowing about shifting trends can allevi-ate some of the nervousness.
According to a recent survey from Brides magazine, one in three brides plan to get into bed on the wedding night and ... sleep. After all of the hoopla of planning and enjoying the wedding, most people are ex-hausted. Others say they plan to stay up and relive moments of the day. Only about half of all couples think they will consum-mate the marriage on their wed-ding night.
Taking the pressure off of the wedding night means that the rest of the honeymoon may be fi lled with opportunities to be amorous. But couples may still be fi lled with expectations for

* Accept the fact that some wed-ding nights and honeymoons aren’t exactly what’s pictured in the movies. Don’t try to live up to a Hollywood-inspired ideal or you may be let down when things don’t go your way. In other words, it may rain on your beachside liaison.
* A wedding requires a lot of work. Many people fi nd them-selves to be physically ex-hausted afterward. Others fi nd they are so wound up that they cannot relax. When the mind or body is on adrenaline overload or completely wiped out, it’s not the ideal situation for romantic endeavors.
* Try to make the honeymoon stand apart from other nights by packing nice lingerie or night-time attire so that the memories will be special. There will be plenty of other times down the road when you’re an old, mar-ried couple to hop between the sheets in a ratty college T-shirt.
* Pack some candles and mood music, or ask the resort to han-dle these details for you. These items can help set the scene.
* Make sure your packing list includes special toiletries and birth control methods if you’re not ready to start a family so soon after being married. The brands you prefer may be hard to acquire while at some honey-moon locations.

Drivers in San Francisco might have the most incentive to re-duce fuel consumption. As the end of 2010 approached, no motorists could expect pay more for a gallon of regular grade gasoline than those who call the country’s 12th most populous city home. Accord-ing to reports from the Energy Information Administration, in the fi rst week of December 2010, drivers in San Francisco paid an average of $3.24 for a gallon of regular grade gas, slightly edging their neighbors to the south in Los Angeles. That average was the highest among any of the major cities across the country, including Chicago, New York City and Miami. Behind San Francis-co and Los Angeles, Seattle residents paid the most at the pump, paying an average of $3.19 per gallon. Not surpris-ingly, the state that paid the
