CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stutter-ing is a frustrating and em-barrassing problem for mil-lions of people, but it can be especially tough on elemen-tary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from fi rst through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stutter-ing. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about them-selves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofi t Stut-tering Foundation is avail-able free of charge to public libraries nationwide. “In overly hectic lives, career planning often gets moved to the back burner,” said Michael Bevis, director of Academic Aff airs for Univer-sity of Phoenix and faculty member for the School of Business. “Many Americans feel unsatisfi ed and stagnant in their careers, and the only way to take action is to de-vote time to making a plan for change. This does not necessarily mean a career change, but often an ad-justment in the way you ap-proach your existing career.”
According to Bevis, job com-placency should not be ig-nored because career satis-faction plays a major role in overall satisfaction. In fact, a
national University of Phoe-nix survey conducted by Harris Poll found that nearly half of working adults in the U.S. gain equal or greater feelings of self-worth from their jobs and careers as they do from their personal lives, and 45 percent are still searching for the right career. Another survey from the University shows that nearly two-thirds of all work-ing adults say they currently have limited opportunities within their companies, but 53 percent acknowledge they should take charge by being more entrepreneurial in their careers.
Bevis agrees. “Being entre-preneurial means approach-ing your existing career with purpose, not relying on your employer to manage your career,” he said. “Setting ca-reer goals, developing a strong personal brand and constantly looking for ways to grow and tie your respon-
sibilities to the company’s bottom line can help you succeed and feel more en-gaged in your career.”
