children or (more often) leave a birch switch behind as a hint of their fate if the bad behavior

continued. Most often, St. Nicholas intervened, saving even naughty children from Black

Pete, teaching them that they could earn another chance if they would mend their ways.

Eventually the evil accomplice was dropped leaving it up to St. Nicholas to be the sole judge of

whether a child was naughty or nice and the birch switch was replaced with a lump of coal.

So, just prior to his journey across the Atlantic to the New World, St. Nicholas had become a red

robed, white bearded figure who flew on a white horse to deliver gifts to good children overnight

during the Christmas Holy Days. In the early days of New York, the Dutch name Sante Klaus

was adopted by more recent English colonists as Santa Claus. The name stuck and immigrants

of many backgrounds adopted him and carried his name west as America was explored.

Washington Irving is credited with widening Santa Claus popularity and putting him

in a cart that flew through the air. The writings of Irving were certainly known by Henry

Livingston who penned the famous poem An Account of a Visit from Saint Nicholas that he

recited to his children one Christmas. Later, in 1822, the poem was published for the first time

in the Troy Sentinel. A professor of divinity, Dr Clement Moore, claimed authorship and a

controversy rages to this day over who actually wrote the poem. Regardless, the poem became

quite popular and did wonders for the reputation of Santa Claus. It gave us a sleigh pulled by

reindeer that all had names and reinforced the idea that Santa entered through the chimney. The

bishops robes were gone; replaced by a furry suit. Santa was now jolly and corpulent but small.

This thoroughly American rendition of St Nicholas was hugely popular and the

poem was (and is still) repeated every Christmas Eve in nearly every American home.

During the dark days of the Civil War, Harpers Weekly published numerous stories about

Santa Claus illustrated by a German immigrant, Thomas Nast. The characteristics Santa

Claus were no longer left up to the imagination. Nasts illustrations unified and solidified

popular ideas of what Santa looked like and how he acted. He was a Jolly Old Elf.

Today we think of Santa Claus as a much larger personage. This came about through an

advertising campaign conducted during the early days of popular color publications. The Coca-

Cola Company sponsored an ad campaign during Prohibition that featured Santa as a larger

version of the elf. Billboards and magazine images of this new Santa blazed their way into

the popular consciousness and have remained ever since. Santas favorite reindeer Rudolph

was introduced through another popular ad campaign staged by Montgomery Ward in 1939.

Through all the changes St. Nick has undergone, he remains in our hearts as our

companion at Christmas. Whether Saint or Santa, we can count on him to remind

us that Christmas is a time for giving and for children. Every effort must be made

to make a magical visit possible for every child.... especially the less fortunate.

Above all else, this is the legacy of Saint Nicholas. Please, give him a hand.

OPEN DAILY: 10:00-5:00 THROUGH DECEMBER 24TH

As the cost of living contin-ues to rise, holiday shop-ping also has become much more expensive in recent years, and it can be easy for shoppers to overex-tend themselves fi nancially come the holiday season.

HOW TO ESTABLISH GIFT SPENDING LIMITSAccording to a recent Gallup poll, the average American plans to spend around $790 per holiday season, although many go above and beyond that amount. Starting off the new year in debt is a recipe for stress, which can have

negative repercussions for the rest of the year.

In addition to overspending during the holiday season, many people stretch them-selves thin on Valentines Day, birthdays, and Mothers Day and Fathers Day. One

way to make shopping more manageable is to establish spending limits that dic-tate how much each family member can spend on each gift he or she buys.

It is important to exercise tact when approaching the subject of gift limits. Dis-cuss the topic with friends and family members with whom you usually exchange gifts long before the holiday season. Agree on a reason-able amount of money each person will spend on gifts. If necessary, ask everyone to write down a fi gure and then determine the aver-age, using that fi gure as your spending limit.

Establishing a spending limit makes it easier for every family to aff ord their holiday purchases. If there are six people on your shopping list and youre spending $50 per person, you know to allocate $300 for gifts. Saving and budgeting can be adjusted accordingly.

When no such limit is es-tablished, you may go over-board to compensate, even if you cannot aff ord to do so.

Another way to save money is to suggest giving the gift of experiences rather than

tangible and potentially costly gifts. For example, take a loved one out for dinner or suggest going on vacation together to make better use of your collective funds. A well-timed extend-ed family vacation in lieu of gift exchanges may alleviate the stress of the holiday sea-son, much of which can be traced to holiday spending.

Establishing a gift-giving strategy and budget for each person to work with can make for a more peace-

ful holiday season by freeing up time to spend with loved ones and placing the focus on family instead of shop-ping.

Parents often fi nd them-selves waiting in long lines to snag the hottest toys for childrens holiday gifts. Shoppers arrive at retail stores in droves to grab the newest video game consoles or must-have dolls or action fi gures.

From Cabbage Patch Dolls of the 1980s to the Elmo craze of the 1990s, every genera-tion seems to have its own must-have holiday gift. This year, holiday shoppers may want to start shopping early if they hope to land any of the following items that fi g-ure to be this years hot toys.

Frozen-themed toys: Mega-retailer Walmart pre-dicts that toys inspired by the smash hit fi lm Frozen will continue to be hot com-modities this holiday season. To meet demand, the retailer already is stocking up on the popular characters and other products banking on the popularity of the fi lm. If the special girl in your life is still enamored with all things Frozen, its a smart bet to start your holiday buying early this year.

Hunger Games athletic items: Fans of the Hunger Games trilogy, be it the books, movies or both, are familiar with lead character Katniss prowess with a bow and arrow. Bows inspired by the movie are in demand and will appeal to both girls and boys testing their ar-chery skills.

Beats by Dr. Dre: Music-lov-ers still consider these head-phones must-have items. Theyre especially prevalent among the teen market. Available in a variety of col-ors, users can coordinate their Beats headphones with their clothing or accessories.

Lego Minecraft: It was only a matter of time before Lego got in on the action of one of

    PREDICTIONS

the hottest games to sweep the Internet and video game console world. Minecraft is a digital building game that has enthralled gamers of all ages. Now Minecraft enthu-siasts can recreate on-screen worlds in tangible Lego ver-sions.

Xeno: Xeno is a friend-toy that is neither robot nor doll, but an interactive pet. Made from nontoxic elastic material and including eight sensors, the creature is a moving, reacting compan-ion. Xeno even can dance to music. And parents will love that Xeno does not need to be taken for walks.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: On the heels of sum-mer blockbuster inspired by these gifted turtles, fans of the weapon-swinging shelled warriors will certain-ly want to surround them-

selves with all things turtle, so expect to see plenty of movie-inspired gifts on store shelves this season.

The holiday season is on the horizon, and its never too early to begin shopping for the toys and games experts predict will be this years must-have items.

Shopping is a big part of the holiday season, when families and friends gather to recon-nect and exchange gifts. While the popularity of shopping on-line has grown, such practices are not always eco-friendly or timely, as gifts bought on-line must be packaged and shipped, wasting valuable resources and time that last-minute shoppers may not have.

The bene ts of shopping lo-cally go beyond convenience and the chance to reduce your carbon footprint. The follow-ing are a few ways that shop-ping locally this holiday sea-son can directly bene t your community and the people who call it home.

    Local economy

When men and women shop locally, they are putting money back into their lo-cal communities. Local small businesses may be owned by your neighbors, and it can be comforting to know that your holiday shopping dollars are going to support a neighbor instead of a large corporation. Local businesses also employ your neighbors, so shopping local can strengthen the lo-cal economy by creating jobs that may not exist if you and members of your community fail to support local small busi-nesses.

    Community identity

Local small businesses go a long way toward creating a neighborhood identity, and

    SHOP LOCALLY THIS HOLIDAY

    SEASON

that identity can create a stronger sense of community among you and your neigh-bors. In addition, a unique community identity can make your town more attractive to outsiders, and that appeal can improve the value of lo-cal real estate while also at-tracting more people to local businesses in your neighbor-hood.

    Uniqueness of gifts

The gifts you buy when shop-ping locally also can ben-e t your community. Gifts purchased from small local businesses tend to be more unique than items bought from national chains, as smaller retailers tend to sell

more homemade items than their national competitors. Recipients of such items may nd such gifts more thought-ful than mass produced items bought from national chains,

and the uniqueness of home-made gifts may encourage the gifts recipients to visit your community and do some shopping, further bene tting your local economy.

    Customer service

The accessibility of customer service is another oft-over-looked bene t of shopping locally. When buying from national chains, especially during the holiday season when such businesses may be overwhelmed with orders, making contact with cus-tomer service departments can be a trying exercise in patience. Long wait times on the phone or online can make the process of contacting cus-tomer service extremely frus-trating. But such frustration is rare when buying from local businesses, as consumers can simply take their products into the store, where employ-ees can immediately address their concerns. In addition, buying locally makes it more convenient for friends and family members who also live in your community to return their gifts.

Though there is no offi cial data that declares the best-selling holiday toy for chil-dren of all-time, its fair to assume the lovable Sesame Street fi gure Elmo is high on the list of most popular holiday toys. Much of that popularity can be traced to the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo in 1996. Though not the fi rst Elmo doll, Tickle Me Elmo became the must-have gift of 1996, when parents searched far and wide for the doll that laughed when users tickled its stomach. During the holiday season of 1996, many people paid far beyond market price just so their children could wake up on Christmas or Chanukah and have a Tickle Me Elmo doll to call their own. Since 1996, Elmo has been reincar-nated many times over, and each Elmo doll seems to in-spire its own craze come the holiday season. Released in 1998, Walk N Talk Elmo was a popular childrens gift, as was Rock N Roll Elmo (1999), Tickle Me Elmo Surprise (2001), Chicken Dance Elmo (2002), and SHOUT Elmo (2005). In 2006, Mattel, the company that produces the Elmo dolls, announced a spe-cial commemorative Elmo to mark the 10-year anniversary of the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo. That, too, sparked a buying frenzy, as some re-ports indicated private sell-ers were selling the latest Elmo, known as TMX Elmo, for thousands of dollars.

Thousands of paper and plastic shopping bags end up in landfi lls after the holiday season. Reusable cloth bags can limit the amount of bags tossed away, and users of plastic bags can recycle those bags at appropriate recep-tacles.

Four million tons of waste is

    DID YOU KNOW?

    HOLIDAY WASTE BY THE

    NUMBERS

attributed to shopping bags and wrapping paper. Recy-cling paper or looking for re-usable items in which to wrap gifts can cut down on paper waste.

Approximately 33 million live trees are cut down and sold in North America each year

for Christmas. If you use a live tree, be sure to recycle it so it can be turned into mulch in-stead of being sent to a land-fi ll. Otherwise, consider buy-ing a potted tree and planting it after the holidays.

Nearly 2.65 billion Christmas cards are sold and exchanged

each year in the United States alone. This many cards can fi ll a football fi eld 10 stories high. One less card sent per person can save roughly 50,000 cu-bic yards of paper. Electronic greetings are another way to save paper.

    Say cheese wreath

Purchase a premade ev-ergreen wreath or wrap boughs of pine around a wreath frame to make your own. Glue or tie on small wooden frames with photos of the family to the wreath. Fill in the barren spots with small bows and ornaments.

    Fruitful wreath

Instead of an evergreen wreath, create something festive and edible. Fruit and vegetables in vibrant col-ors can be used to fashion a wreath. Use picks or wire to attach oranges, lemons, limes, clementines, and any other produce desired to a foam wreath. Use leaves to fi ll in sparse areas and a thick ribbon to hang the wreath.

    Holly vine wreath

Purchase a plain grapevine wreath and decorate it with sprigs of holly leaves and stems with berries. Simple

and festive, this wreath should take only a few min-utes to make and then hang.

    Metallic wreath

Add a glamorous touch to an evergreen wreath with faux fruit and pine cones that you paint with glimmering

metallic colors. Intersperse items in gold, copper and sil-ver for an eye-catching piece that can adorn any spot in your home. Add a few twin-kling lights to refl ect off of the metallic elements to add even more appeal.

    Bells or glass ornament wreath

Use fl exible wire to string a

wreath of metal bells or glass

    ornaments together in a ring

    shape. Bells not only look

nice but also lend a gentle

    twinkling sound anytime the

    door is opened.

    Floral wreath

Make a fresh fl ower wreath

from a fl orists wreath and

    fresh blooms. Soak the foam

    wreath in water according

    to the packaged directions.

    Trim fl ower stems (carna-

    tions are durable) and insert

    the stems into the wreath.

Attach a bow to the bottom

of the wreath and then hang.

This is one wreath that is best

displayed the day of the fes-

tivities because it has a short

    shelf life.
