FAMILY OWNED SINCE 1997

So, what can the gardener do in February to get ready for the season ahead? This is the time for planning and buying seeds, but it’s too early to start growing them. Well, there is one garden plant that wants to get started now for spring planting; tuberous begonias.

Tuberous begonias are a wonderful fl owering plant for folks with shady areas that could benefi t from some fl owering color that will last right up until fi rst frost. As the name im-plies, these begonias grow from tubers rather than seeds or cuttings like other begonias. They sport showy fl owers that come in a wide range of sizes and colors. There are even hanging varieties. Besides being a great choice for planting directly in soil, many varieties of tuberous begonias are happy to grow in containers that you can place about your shady patio or balcony.

Since tuberous begonias are slow to start, it’s best to start them indoors during February through mid-March. It’s also a great winter activity for the desperate northeastern gardener who’s yearning for the feel and smell of soil and the sight of something…anything that’s growing.

To make a good show in the garden, you’ll want to start several begonia tubers. The best way to do this is to start them in a shallow 11” by 22” seed tray. First, fi ll the tray with a good STERILE potting mix that’s high in peat content. You should be able to start ten or so tubers in a single tray. When you’re picking out your tubers at the garden center, pick out the largest ones. You’ll notice that the lumpy round tubers are domed on one side and slightly dished on the other. The dished side of the tuber is the top. Starting them is a snap. Simply nestle each tuber, dished side up, into your soil-fi lled tray just level with the surface of the soil. You can just cover the top of the tuber but not with more than a quarter of an inch of soil. Moisten the soil with room temperature water. If the tray you’re using has no holes for drainage, be careful. Begonias will rot easily if kept too moist so take it easy. The soil wants to be just lightly moist, not soggy wet. It’s best to use a tray with holes so that excess water will drain away. Nesting a tray without holes below the tray with drainage holes prevents damage to wood surfaces and allows you to remove excess water in case you overdo it.

After the initial watering, you shouldn’t water again until you see signs of growth or the soil is actually dry. You can cover your tuber-fi lled tray with newspaper or a plastic sheet to hold in humidity to speed up sprouting, but remove it immediately at the fi rst sign of growth. Depending on the variety you’ve chosen, sprouts will appear from one to fi ve week after planting and watering. Once the fi rst shoots appear, make sure that you keep the soil from drying out; still avoiding sogginess since begonia tubers can rot easily if kept too moist.

After fi ve or six leaves have developed, it’s time to transplant them into larger pots. If you plan on growing them in containers all summer, this would be the time to plant them into their “display pots”. They’ll need lots of bright light but no direct sunlight. You can speed them along with HALF strength balanced (20-20-20) liquid or soluble plant food every two weeks (no, more isn’t better).

Once ALL danger of frost has passed in spring (late May to you), you can transplant them into their summer bed. I like to cover mine for a few days with horticultural fabric to allow them to get used to outdoor light after growing indoors. Remember, they prefer shade so make sure they don’t get direct sunlight. An hour of the day’s fi rst rays won’t hurt them but avoid any afternoon sun completely. Now all they need is a little liquid plant food every couple of weeks and regular removal of spent fl owers and they’ll just go and go.

Since begonia tubers are quite tender, you’ll want to lift them from the soil immediately after the fi rst frost nips them in fall. There’s no sin in taking them out a bit before frost gets them. Better safe than sorry. Snip off all the stems and place the tubers on a sheet of news-paper to dry. Brush off any loose soil and dust them with a good bulb dust to help prevent mold. Place them into a shoebox of sterile potting soil for winter storage. Store them in a cool place that won’t freeze. Get them out next February and start all over again. If you never have, give tuberous begonias a try. They’re easy to start and you’ll have fun playing in the dirt as we wait for the frozen world outside to thaw. Thanks for the read.

TO THE PARISHIONERS of Immaculate Conception Church Glenville: As I’ve been running into parishion-ers over the past two years, I would just like the truth to be known about my sudden ab-sence from the parish. In January 2013, I was called into a meeting. I was asked to resign as Director of Music, when I refused, I was told by your pastor Jerry Gingrass, Maryann Haskel, and Dan Sleeva that I would be termi-nated. I did not quit or move on, I was fired after 20 years of service, without notice or explanation. I truly enjoyed being a part of your lives and serving the community of the Immaculate Conception Church in Glenville. BERNADETTE PETERSEN

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Favor granted. L.L.C.

Beagle MixPuppies

These cuties are about 8 weeks old and were owner turn ins to a high kill shel-ter. They have been fully

vetted, wormed and given their first shots. For more information please call the

shelter and speak to one of our volunteers or just come by the shelter. We are open 7 days a week.

These 4 beauties are pure bred Walker hounds.

They were from a breeder who was going out of

business. They are around 12-14 weeks old, up to date on shots, wormed and vetted. There are 2 females and 2 males.

They all have wonderful, playful personalities.

(NAPS)—It’s a cold, hard fact: Icy roads are dangerous for even the most experienced driver, and even in dry weather, multicar pileups have closed interstates.

If you’re ever involved in an accident on the highway, take heed of a particular hazard: In many cases, people in multi-ple-vehicle accidents are hurt or even killed after surviving the initial crash largely unscathed. Three things to remember to avoid being among them are:

1. Stay Inside: Stay in your car. According to the National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration, about 16 percent of pedestrian traffi c deaths occur on freeways. People who get out of their cars are killed and injured far more often than those who stay inside;

2. Stay Belted: Even those who do stay in the car but unbuck-le their seat belt are more easily and severely hurt by subse-quent cars that pile into them;

3. Stay Calm and Connected: Don’t panic and don’t get into a discussion on the spot with another driver. Do try to signal the other drivers to get off the road to somewhere safe where you can exchange information and contact the police.

As one California Highway Patrol offi cer put it, “The best safe practice would be to stay in your vehicle with your seat belt on. If your vehicle is drivable, we always recommend getting out of the roadway. Bottom line: The freeway is a very dan-gerous place for pedestrians to be, and people need to real-ize that the potential for major injuries or death skyrockets as

SURVIVING ACCIDENTS ON MAJOR ROADS

opposed to being in your car with your seat belt on.”

Added an EMT after a crash, “Never, never, NEVER get out of your car on a roadway unless your life is in imminent danger if you do not.

“I can’t stress how dangerous it is to ever get out of your car on a road. You have absolutely no protection if someone plows into you, and if you are stopped, chances are much higher that someone will get hurt than if traffi c were moving normally. Plus, if you are out of your car, busy exchanging in-formation with someone else while standing in the road, you aren’t paying 100 percent attention to what might be coming up behind you, lessening your chances of getting out of the way when something goes wrong.”

To help, experts on safety at the Accident Attorneys Organi-zation developed a safety checklist that you can download at www.accidentattorneys.org and keep in your glove box.

If you’re ever in an accident on the highway, drive off the road if you can and don’t unbuckle your seat belt or get out of your car.

NOW OPEN-A NEW 3RD LOCATION TO SERVE YOU BETTER

(NAPS)—The next time you’re shopping for a new car or truck, you might want to consider purchasing one that off ers the greatest op-tions for customization. Automakers are making vehicles more reliable and longer lasting than ever be-fore. As a result, buyers are increasingly interested in a vehicle’s ability to be trans-formed to fi t their needs. So when it comes to making the fi nal decision, the abil-ity to personalize the vehicle can be the diff erence in en-suring that a vehicle meets your needs.

Just about all new cars and trucks can be modifi ed, whether it’s a new paint job, seat covers, body kit or perfor-mance enhancement. In fact, consumers spend more than $33 billion a year on products that enhance the styling, per-formance and functionality of cars, trucks and SUVs.

There are, however, certain models that are more ac-cessory friendly than others. One way to learn what the hottest vehicles for person-alization are is to check out the SEMA Award winners, presented annually by the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA).

“The SEMA Award helps guide consumers toward the hottest-trending and most accessory-friendly ve-hicles on the market,” said Chris Kersting, SEMA presi-dent and CEO.

Awards are presented annu-ally in four categories based on the models that parts and accessory manufactur-ers are investing in.

This year’s winning vehicles were the Ford Mustang for the Hottest Car, the Honda Fit for the Hottest Sport Compact, the Jeep Wrangler for the Hottest 4X4-SUV, and the Chevrolet Silverado for the Hottest Truck.

train, and 2.3L EcoBoost, the 2015 Mustang can be enhanced a thousand diff er-ent ways. Whether it is with performance products or appearance accessories, the Mustang is versatile in its ability to be customized, al-lowing owners to turn their car into something truly per-sonal.

Hottest Sport Compact

Honda vehicles are well known for being accessory friendly, so it is no surprise that the Honda Fit was named the winner of the Hottest Sport Compact. The body itself is both tunable and upgradable, making it easy to improve the perfor-mance and look of the vehi-cle. Aff ordable, fuel effi cient and completely customiz-able, the Honda Fit is proof that vehicle modifi cation is attainable at any price point.

vorite in the auto enthusiast market. The Jeep Wrangler is popular among the off -road community for its durability and ruggedness, yet practi-cal and reliable enough for everyday driving.

Hottest Truck

Chevy trucks have been helping Americans earn their keep for nearly a cen-tury, and the Silverado is keeping the tradition going. As the SEMA Award winner for the Hottest Truck, the Sil-verado off ers drivers unlim-ited versatility. Traditional truck modifi cations include bed liners, running boards and hitches, while those looking for greater person-alization can also easily en-hance the performance or look of the truck.

The SEMA Award provides valuable guidance to those looking for a top-quality ve-hicle that can be personal-ized. Winners were selected by exhibiting manufacturers at the 2014 SEMA Show, an annual trade show where auto accessory manufactur-ers meet with buyers from throughout the world. To

EYE DILATION

EYES ON HEALTH

For further information, call our office at 399-6368

Most patients do not look forward to having their eyes dilated during their annual eye examination, as it makes it hard to focus on close work for a few hours, and makes the eyes very sensitive to bright lights. But, eye dilation is necessary in many cases for the overall health of the patient and their risk of eye disease. The eye drops used for dilation cause the pupils to widen, allowing in more light and giving the doctor a better view of the back of the eye. Looking at the back of the eye reveals whether or not small blood vessels have thickened, narrowed or burst. This is the only place in the body where the small blood vessels can be viewed and often, any problems here are found in the small blood vessels in other organs that cannot be seen, such as the kidneys. In fact, many people discover they have high blood pressure because their doctor sees the signs during their regular eye examination. Dilation also aids the doctor in determining eye diseases such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy (the leading cause of blindness in the US), glaucoma, and even tumors. In determin-ing if dilation is necessary at your appointment, your doctor will consider a number of factors: your age, as the risk of eye disease increases with age; your eye health; your overall health, as cer-tain diseases such as diabetes increase the risk of eye disease; and the reason for your eye evaluation, as certain symptoms may require dilation to determine the cause. No other test or proce-dure has been found to be more effective or accurate in viewing the back of the eye, so always be sure to bring a pair of sunglasses to your appointment.
