This is a great time of year for gardeners; especially this year with a near-perfect growing sea-son. There are home grown fl owers in vases in the living room, dining room and even the kitchen. While the perennial fl owers follow their blooming cycle with amazing precision, the annuals have entered their “frenzy mode” as the days gradually begin to shorten. I’m always amazed at how quickly they grow as summer wanes. My annual fl owers were dawdled through May and early June we had. We usually get a break from mowing the lawn in July. Not this year. I’ve had to mow the lawn every week thanks to well-timed thunderstorms. I don’t mind really since a nice green lawn makes such a beautiful “frame” for the fl owerbeds. I’d much rather spend my time mowing than dragging the hose around trying to keep everything alive. Then there’s the bounty of berries, fruit and vegetables that we’re starting to enjoy this year. The strawberries this year came and went quickly but, the birds and I have also been enjoying all the blackberries and raspberries that are appearing in such abundance. A couple of years ago we planted some thornless raspberries and we’re thrilled with the huge crop they’ve provided. It took a couple of years for them to get going but they’ve really start pumping out the berries. There’s only one little glitch; Ajax the dog has taken a liking to strawberries and raspberries so we have to keep an eye on him. A couple of time I’ve caught him in there munching the berries right off the plants. I guess it is our own fault since we found it amusing to toss him the overripe berries when we were harvesting the wild berries that grow on the property. Ajax learns quickly. Perhaps we shouldn’t have planted thornless varieties. He won’t “harvest” the wild thorny berries but has no reservations about going into the thornless ones in the garden. I guess it is a tradeoff since, when we brush Ajax, we take the clumps of hair and tuck them around the perimeter of the garden to repel the deer that are all around. During the couple of years that we were dogless, we had all kinds of problems with the deer. They’d go into the garden at night and strip the tomatoes right off the vines. Beans and lettuce? Forget about it. While we still see deer in the fi elds, they have, so far, left the garden alone. I guess I’ll have to forgive Ajax a few berries since he’s helping to keep the deer away.

All around town I see that the various members of the hibiscus are starting to put on their show. This includes althea, The Rose of Sharon. I have a short row of purple althea that has a double fl ower much like a carnation that is putting on a nice show. It seems that althea are gaining in popularity lately. While mine are double fl owering, I greatly admire the single fl owering varieties that I’m starting to see more of. Their fl ower closely resembles that of the tropical hibiscus that is so popular in the south. These single fl owering altheas weren’t available when I planted my hedge 10 years ago or I would have surely opted for one of those. Rose of Sharon is available in a wide range of colors but tend toward the reds and lavenders. There are even varieties that have a bi-colored fl ower and there’s a nice white that I’ve see as well. While the althea is a woody shrub, there’s another hardy hibiscus that is perennial in nature (it dies to the ground in winter) that is well worth commenting on.

Like althea or Rose of Sharon, the mallow hibiscus is a relative of the tropical hibiscus al-though the fl owers are much larger. The showy mallow hibiscus will grow from the ground to a height of 4’ to 6’ during each growing season. Mallow hibiscus fl owers range in color from white to deep purple and encompass every shade of pink in between. As if this weren’t enough, the fl owers can be as large as a dinner plate! I know you’ve seen these around town since they are in fl ower right now. A lot of folks don’t realize that this plant is hardy in our area and with easily survive over winter to return larger and showier each year. Each of the giant fl owers that mallow hibiscus produces will only remain open for one day. Fortunately, they produce plenty of buds so the show goes on for at least a couple of weeks and even longer for a well-established clump.

If you plant either of these northern members of the hibiscus family, you’ll need to be patient in spring. Neither the woody shrub althea nor the perennial mallow hibiscus will show any sign of life until spring is well under way. I usually see no sign of life from either in my yard until the lilacs are in bloom. That’s when the fi rst leaves appear on my althea and the mallow hibiscus is just poking a shoot up from the soil. They are amazing plants and easily deserve a place in your garden. Thanks for the read.

5K Fun Run/Walk for Brachial Plexus InjuriesSARATOGA – The 2nd Annual 5K Fun Run/Walk to raise awareness for the United Brachial Plexus Network will be held on August 6 at the Saratoga State Park Warming Hut. Registration begins at 8am; Fun Run/Walk starts at 9am. Registration is available online at UBPN.org. Registration fees are $20 individual / $40 for a family of four. Proceeds will benefi t Brachial Plexus Network, Inc. The term Brachial Plexus Injury (BPI) refers to an injury to the complex set of nerves that control the muscles of the fi ngers, hand, arm, and shoulder. The Brachial Plexus can be damaged in a number of different ways including accidents involving high impact conditions but most brachial plexus injuries are sustained during birth from excessive force being applied to the baby’s neck and head resulting in stretching and/or tearing of the Brachial Plexus nerves. Proper labor management would prevent a majority of these preventable obstetrical injuries. Please join us in raising awareness! (A)

Viscusi’s manufacturers custom-made aluminim awnings for doors, windows and patios, as well as all types of screens. We are experts at enclosing porches and patios. We have a complete line of fabric retractable awnings and regular fabric awnings for doors and windows for sale. We also sell storm and screen windows and doors. Our business philosophy is simple: “to provide customers with quality products and services”.

The business was started in 1947 by John Viscusi. In 1983 I started working there part time and eventually, when John was ready to retire, our family pur-chased the business. I have been the owner since 1990.

I am married and have three sons. I graduated from Scotia schools and attended Hudson Vally Community College and my previous background is in sales. My favorite activities outside of family are golf and basketball.

Motorcycles have been around for decades and so have riding enthusi-asts. Through all of the innovations and motorcycle design changes, safe-ty while riding remains of the utmost importance.

Very often motorcycle accidents are attributed to lack of rider skill. The National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration says that there are roughly 4 million registered motor-cycle riders on American roadways. There may be many others who are unlicensed who still hop on a motor-cycle as a preferred mode of trans-portation.

There are several advantages to mo-torcycles. With some models, mo-torcycles offer a ride with good fuel economy. Cycles take up less space than cars, and they can be easier to park and maintain in an urban set-ting.

NHTSA statistics indicate that mo-torcycle fatalities make up around 5 percent of all traffi c fatalities. Eighty percent of motorcycle accidents result in injury or death, compared to the roughly 20 percent of other vehicles. That’s due to the minimal protection the vehicle provides. This further em-phasizes the necessity to properly and

safely operate a motorcycle to avoid accidents in the fi rst place.

Riding safely fi rst involves purchas-ing a bike that is the right size and power for the rider. Larger bikes can be heavy and riders who are small in stature may not be able to maneu-ver or lift the motorcycle should it fall over. Also, riders should choose bikes that fi t their lifestyles. For in-stance, a trail bike will not be safe on a highway.

It is a good idea to enroll in a motor-

cycle safety course if this is a rider’s fi rst experience with a bike. This course will give invaluable tips re-garding maneuvering, learning about operating the cycle, defensive driv-ing techniques and other tips specifi c to motorcycles. For example, inter-sections are one place on a roadway where many accidents take place. Bike riders should try to enter an in-tersection with a larger vehicle on the right of the motorcycle or at least in the left-most lane to provide a space cushion from oncoming traffi c.
