PRAYERSA PRAYER to the Blessed Virgin (Never known to fail). Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and shelter me, herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity. (Make re-quest). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have re-course to thee (3 times). Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days, then you must publish it and it will be granted to you. M.A.Z.

Free Consultations – No Fee Unless You Collect

The days continue to shrink as we move toward the solstice and it’s attendant holi-

days (Christmas, Hanukkah, etc.). At this time of year, we decorate our domiciles

for the upcoming festivities surrounding the holidays. Featured are our holiday

plants. Everywhere we turn we’ll see Evergreen trees, Mistletoe, Holly & Ivy,

Christmas Cacti and Poinsettias. Why are they involved in our modern holiday

celebrations?

Their backgrounds are varied and quite interesting. Some were adopted by Chris-

tianity from “pagan” cultures that existed in an area before Christianity arrived

there. Others never were adopted into Christian lore, but have managed to make

their appearance on their own, through folklore and traditions that include their

use in celebrations on or near the solstice.

Take mistletoe for instance. Not only did the church never sanction the use of

mistletoe in celebration; its use was actually banned at one time. This is, no doubt,

due to the fact that it was highly revered by the ‘pagan’ Druid priests, and was cen-

tral to their ancient solstice celebrations along with its host, the oak tree. During

the Druid’s solstice celebration, a Druid priest would cut the parasitic mistletoe

from the branch of an oak tree and distribute pieces of it to the gathered populace.

While doing this, he was careful not to let it touch the earth. Part of the mystery of

mistletoe to the Druids was that it grew, not from soil, but from the bark of the oak

tree. To receive a sprig of mistletoe from the priest was a blessing Druids looked

forward to as part of their solstice rituals.

Today, all we know about mistletoe is that we are entitled to kiss anyone who

stands beneath it. That tradition has its roots in Scandinavian myth. Loki, a

troublesome little god, shot Balder, another young god, with an arrow made of

mistletoe, the only thing that could harm this favorite son of Freyja. The tears of

sorrow Freyja shed became the white berries of the mistletoe. All the Norse gods

worked together to restore Balder to life and, in gratitude, Freyja is said to bestow

a kiss on anyone who passes beneath mistletoe.

The origin of the use of Holly as a holiday decoration is a bit more obscure. It

was long believed that “witches” and “evil spirits” had an aversion to holly, so it

is likely that it’s use began as a protector of the home during important times of

the year like the solstice. There is an ancient Christmas carol that tells of Holly

and Ivy vying for the place of honor as a holiday trim. Holly is eventually chosen

because of its red berries. There is also a legend that says that the crown of thorns

worn by Christ was made of Holly. Until then, the berries of holly were white, but

turned red like the drops of Christ’s blood. Thanks for the read.

EYES ON HEALTH

DO YOU HAVE DRY EYES? The term “dry eye” is self-explanatory – eyes that aren’t fresh, moist and comfortable. The problem affects many people, but postmenopausal women and people who wear contact lenses are particularly susceptible. The condition is related to the quantity and quality of your tears, which can be affected by numerous factors. Some possible causes include: disease, such as acne ro-sacea; hormonal imbalance; eyelid abnormalities; medi-cations, such as antihistamines, decongestants and birth control; and exposure to air pollution or other environ-mental factors. Your eyes can become dry in centrally heated or air-conditioned rooms and on airplanes. Long stretches working at a computer can dry your eyes because you don’t blink as often as you normally do. How can you tell if you have chronic dry eyes? Com-mon signs and systems include: Discomfort – Foreign body sensation – Redness – Fatigue – Uncomfortable contact lenses.

Imported holiday gifts

As the holidays approach, giant factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with mon-strous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no lon-ger an excuse that, at gift-giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is! It’s time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fi t in a shirt box, wrapped in wrapping paper?

Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift cer-tifi cates from your local American hair salon or barber? Gym mem-

bership? It’s appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn’t appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certifi -cate or a book of gift certifi cates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunk-ing down the Benjamin’s on a fl at-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift-receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the sum-mer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certifi -cates. And, if your intended isn’t the fancy eatery sort, what about a half

dozen breakfasts at the local break-fast joint. Remember, folks, this isn’t about big National chains -- this is about supporting your hometown Americans with their fi nancial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn’t use an oil change for their car, truck or mo-torcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy? Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

Maybe your computer could use a tune-up, and some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running could help you?

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at lo-cal, owner-operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And how about going out to see a play or bal-let at your hometown theatre? Musi-cians need love, too, so fi nd a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand lights for the house? When you buy a fi ve dollar string of lights, about fi fty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that export countries can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring for the USA; encouraging American small busi-nesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefi ts come back to us in ways we couldn’t imagine. THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn’t that what Christ-mas is about?

People shopping for toys and presents this holiday season who are also trying to be conscientious of buying American or Canadian may want to pay more attention to the items they are getting. According to research by the U.S. Census Bureau, for the 2010 holiday season, $5.1 billion in toy imports originated in China. China was the leading country of origin for stuffed toys coming into North American ports, as well as for a number of other popular holiday gifts. These include roller skates ($37 million), sports footwear ($218 million) and basketballs ($32 million). China also is the leading supplier of ice skates, with Thailand and Canada ranking second and third for manufacture. Artifi cial Christmas trees and decoration are also big business for China. The U.S. imported $488.5 million worth of Christmas tree ornaments from the country last year and $28.2 million worth of artifi cial trees.

Sensible planning makes for smart holiday shopping

Secure your identity when shopping onlineThere is no denying that shop-ping online is the quickest and easiest way to zip through a holiday shopping list. With a few clicks and keystrokes, it’s possible to have all of your Christmas shopping done in no time. But as many people have found out -- the hard way -- purchasing via the Internet can be risky business, espe-cially during the holiday sea-son when shoppers are pressed for time and make hasty deci-sions. While identity theft and fraud can occur at any time of the year, the holiday shopping season leaves consumers par-ticularly vulnerable to hackers and identity thieves.

According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, a San Diego-based nonprofi t, there are several important steps that consumers should take to ensure that their online trans-actions are conducted both safely and securely. First and foremost, the ITRC recom-mends that consumers shop only on sites that use tech-nology that encrypts -- or en-codes -- both your personal and fi nancial information before sending it for pay-ment processing. Encrypting sensitive information makes it inaccessible to anyone out-side the system, and all of the Web’s major retailers secure customer data in this manner. Nevertheless, it’s a good idea

to ensure that a shopping site is secure, particularly if you have not made purchases there in the past. Any page on a site that asks for personal or fi nancial infor-mation will have a URL or Web address beginning with https:// as opposed to the usual http://.

Shopping only on the sites of merchants you know and trust is another critical means of ensur-ing your online safety. However, if you decide to order from a Web site you have never patron-ized before, it’s a good idea to spend a few minutes investigat-ing the site. For starters, reliable Internet retailers always include a business address and contact telephone number on their sites, as well as information about site security, their return and refund policies, shipping practices and privacy policy. This information should be easily located on the Web site, often along the bottom of the company’s home page. If you can’t fi nd this informa-tion or suspect that the business might not be legitimate, contact the Better Business Bureau or your state’s Attorney General’s

offi ce to determine if there are outstanding complaints against the company.

Another critical step in securing your personal and fi nancial data is to provide only the informa-tion necessary to complete the transaction -- and no more. So-cial Security numbers are not required to complete an online purchase and consumers should never provide this information. Being asked to reveal sensitive information, such as a Social Security number, on a retail Web site is an automatic red fl ag indicating that something is not right. Your best bet? Close your browser window and search for another, reputable source for the item you want.

Finally, whenever you shop on-line, it’s best to pay with credit cards, which are protected by the federal Fair Credit Billing Act -- a law that entitles card-holders to dispute charges made to their accounts. Unfortunately, there is no other form of pay-ment that provides this type or level of protection.

The good news? Once you are assured that a site is secure and the retailer is reputable, shop away. Chances are good that you’ll not only save time, but money and energy as well.

The holiday season is among the most stressful times of year. With long lists of things to do, meals to prepare, family and friends to entertain, and gifts to buy, many people embark on the holiday season with more fear than cheer. And with so many people trying to spend less these days, preparing for the holidays has become that much more challenging. But by planning in advance and establishing a holi-day shopping game plan, men and women can save money and maintain their peace of mind.

Start at the bottom line. The best way to avoid overspending dur-ing the holidays is to establish a budget -- and then stick to it. Before making any holiday purchases, determine a holiday spending limit that is acceptable to you and your spouse or part-ner. The fi gure should include not only the cost of gifts, but ex-pected expenditures for holiday entertainment and entertaining, decorations, travel, and items such as clothing and home im-provements.

Know as you go. Know what portion of a holiday budget is for gifts and keep a running to-tal of expenditures as you shop. This way, you will have a sense of where you stand at any given point in the shopping season and can adjust accordingly.

Be an informed shopper. There are deals galore in the run-up to the holidays and it pays to com-pare prices and offers before making any purchases. Check newspaper and online ads as well as retailers’ Web sites to determine both where and when you can get the best deal.

Make a list and check it twice. Plan your purchases ahead of time to avoid impulse buying. By having a gift in mind for each person on your list, you will save time, money and headaches.

Consider family gifts. If there are a number of families on your gift list, consider giving a single gift -- or gift basket -- that ev-eryone can enjoy. A waffl e iron or ice cream maker, for example, is a gift that foodie families will savor for years to come.
