After the easy warm fall we had it this outbreak of cold air from Canada was a real winter wake up call. Out came all the warm clothes an on came the furnace. Hopefully we’ll get some nice fl uffy snow soon. I fi gure that, if it is going to be winter, then it might as well snow so that we can get outside and enjoy the season.

When we fi nally do get more snow, snow-drifts will are the main feature of our winter landscape. Since our prevailing wind comes from the same direction winter and summer, snow-drifts can teach you a lot about the micro-climates found in your yard. Re-membering that drifts form in areas of calm, take a look around your yard. The largest drifts will form in the most sheltered spots. You will probably notice that the largest drifts form on the east and southeast sides of your house; the side facing away from the prevailing west and northwest winds. The drifts on the east side of my house can get quite high (7’ during the “Blizzard of ‘93) while on the west side, no drifts form at all.

You’ll also be able to observe the windbreak effect of other features in your yard. Some areas may be blown clear by higher wind velocities caused by the channeling effect of landscape features. For instance, the northeast corner of my house gets blown clear of snow because of the increased wind velocity caused by the wind “piling-up” as it tries to round that corner of the house.

Your knowledge of these various exposures to wind within your yard should have an infl uence on decisions you make during the planting season. You’ll want to take into account the effects of the prevailing wind as you decide on placement of fl owerbeds to take advantage of wind drift of fragrance. You will be able to avoid problems caused by planting tender plants (such as rose bushes) in spots that are very windy. Taking wind conditions into account is quite important when considering placement of outdoor living features like decks, cooking areas, swimming pools and fences. There’s no time like now to observe the wind fl ow through your yard...besides, it’ll give you something to do while you’re out there shoveling your walk.

The main garden feature in winter is the weather. Forecasters always have their hands full trying (and generally failing) to predict the track of storm after storm. Although these storms are dangerous and cause great inconvenience, there are some positive aspects to snowy weather. The term “blanket of snow” is very appropriate. The “blanket’ of snow acts as an insulating barrier much like the fi berglass insulation that you hopefully have in the attic of your home. The layer of snow prevents warmth from the earth from radiating into the atmosphere. This means that the frost level will not penetrate more that a couple of feet deep. This is good news for all our shrubs and trees, especially those that were planted only last season and are not completely established. Another benefi t of our “blanket” of snow is the insulative effect it provides for our perennials. In years of “snow drought” the exposed crowns of our beloved perennial fl owers are exposed to the cold, drying winds of the depths of winter. The snow will shelter and protect our perennials, lessening the chances of winterkill. If you have beds that the wind has blown bare, consider shoveling snow onto those areas to re-blanket them.

Once the holidays pass, there’ll be no shortage of evergreen material to scavenge together to cover my perennial beds with. The abandoned Christmas trees I can gather from friends and neighbors provide a perfect mulching material. I don’t like to cover my beds until the ground freezes. I don’t cover the beds too deeply with evergreen boughs; just enough to shade the soil and provide protection from drying winter winds. I’m not cover-ing my beds to keep them from freezing. On the contrary, I’m covering them to keep the soil frozen during any “false spring” weather in February or March. Our hardy perennials are capable of withstanding freezing. What CAN damage them is repeated thawing and re-freezing. My layer of evergreen boughs shades the soil so the beds won’t thaw too early in spring. If this winter provides enough snow to keep the ground covered, my layer of mulch won’t be needed since the snow will protect my beds. I’ve learned not to trust the weather and if the winter continues to be lacking in decent snow cover, I’ll be glad I’ve got them covered up. Thanks for the read.

Two Special Cats Still In Need of A Home For the Holidays

With just a few short days be-fore Christmas, Animalovers still has two wonderful cats that need homes for the holiday.

DANNY is a 2 year old cat that is affectionate, playful and lov-ing. His foster mom says he’s the best cat ever! Danny has al-lergies and sometimes coughs and sneezes, but it seems to be better in the summer. He’s not on any medication and he’d be an easy adoption for a special family.TARA, who recently had kittens, is pretty, petite and personable. She’s 5 ½ years old and she would prefer a home with no other cats. She’d be a perfect friend for an older single person, but may do OK with a small family, too.To help make their dreams come true and to meet Dan-ny or Tara call 448-5468 and press “1” for the adoption line. One of our volunteers will return your call.

Be sure to ask for references from any business you are unsure of or unfamiliar with.

Classi ed Advertising Dept.Salary might garner all the glory,

but many times additional ben-efi ts are just as signifi cant when one is deciding to accept or de-cline a job offer. The offer with the highest salary isn’t necessar-ily the ultimate deal for everyone. Instead, it’s best to consider ad-ditional benefi ts before making such an important decision.

* Retirement: Pensions are large-ly a thing of the past, but compa-nies that do provide pension plans should merit heavy consideration. But even if most applicants are unlikely to fi nd a company with a pension plan, there is the issue of a 401(k) and whether a company will match an employee’s contri-butions. Companies will typically

Perks go beyond dollars and centsonly match up to a certain per-centage, but a company that does match employee contributions should be very appealing.

* Vacation: Vacation time and how employees earn it is relative-ly standard, but some companies do offer better packages than oth-ers. In general, employees who have been with the company 1 to 3 years get two weeks of vaca-tion time, while those who have been with a company for 4 to 10 years typically receive three weeks vacation time. However, not all companies adhere to this standard, and some might require employees to work as many as six years before earning a third week

of vacation. Applicants must de-cide if salary or additional vaca-tion time is a higher priority.

* Medical insurance: Medical in-surance varies greatly depending on the company. Larger compa-nies might offer more affordable medical insurance, giving them a distinct advantage over smaller companies when applicants have a spouse and children to con-sider.

* Holidays: Holidays are typi-cally a minor consideration, but some applicants might prefer a job that guarantees they get all of the major holidays off, even if it means taking less in salary. Applicants who typically travel signifi cant distances during the holidays might want a job that gives them an extra day, such as the day after Thanksgiving, rather than one that requires they use a vacation or personal day to travel during the holidays.

* Tuition assistance: Some com-panies provide tuition assistance to employees who want to con-tinue their education. Such assis-tance can be worth thousands of dollars, mitigating any concerns about lower salary offers.

* Stock options: Stock options below market value might make a job more appealing even if the initial salary offer doesn’t com-pare to other offers.

* Child care: The cost of child care is substantial, and men and women with children to consider

might prefer a job that assists with, or completely covers, those costs more than a job that simply offers the best salary.

* Gym membership: Gym mem-berships have also gotten more

expensive, and some companies

have deals with local gyms that

make their employees eligible for

discounted rates. Some compa-

nies also have gyms on campus

that are free as well as conve-

nient.

When accepting or declining a job offer, men and women must consider everything included in that offer and not just salary. CB11A329
