2015 PROJECT EASTER BUNNY
CAPITAL DISTRICT – Floy-dwarriors.com “Helping Families Cope with Cancer, One Household at a Time” is very pleased to announce its 6th annual run of Project Easter Bunny. Floydwarriors.com founder Lisa Morahan began this eff ort after ex-periencing Easter Sunday in 2009 too ill to make one basket up for her son while in the middle of chemo-therapy treatment. In 2010 enough toys and candy were collected to make up 100 baskets, 135 in 2011, 190 in 2012, 225 in 2013 and 290 in 2014. Our goal is to collect enough new small toys and candy for 350 baskets this year and add yet another oncology center to our list of glad recipients. Several area cancer organizations and hospitals caring for can-cer patients will receive this year’s bounty so children of those in treatment will have a nice big basket to open on Easter morning. Locations to receive baskets hope to include The CR Wood Cen-ter at Glens Falls Hospital, Samaritan Hospital in Troy, The Mollie Wilmot Radiation Oncology Center at Saratoga Hospital, The Community Hospice of Saratoga, The Hope Club in Latham, New York Oncology Hematol-ogy of Albany and Rexford, CRAAB, To Life! and families helped by fl oydwarriors.com. If you are interested in helping this eff ort, please bring unopened candy and brand new small toys to donate to the following lo-cations between March 1st -17th: The CR Wood Center in Glens Falls Hospital, The Malta Community Center, Bella Rouge at Clifton Park Center, The Hope Club in Latham and any Ballston Spa National Bank location.

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER
CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from fi rst through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofi t Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

In only a couple days we’ll have tucked February away for another year. Good riddance I say! We’ve endured another very cold winter and this time we’ve had a snowier than normal February. That’s actually a good thing since that blanket of snow keeps the bitter cold air from forcing the frost deep into the soil. It also prevent repeated freezing and thawing which heaves our shallow-rooted perennials form the ground. It looks like March may be running a little cooler than normal but it will still be much warmer that what we’ve endured for the last couple of months. With any luck at all, we’ll be able to get out into our yards in by the end of the month and start our early feedings of shrubs, trees, lawns and flowerbeds. But, what the heck with? Before we can actually get out there and feed anything, I’m going to explain a bit about fertilizer. Regular readers will have to bear with me on this. You’ve seen this before but you may benefit from a refresher too. The first step is to get a handle on those three mysterious numbers on all fertilizer bags. You have noticed them haven’t you? You may be familiar with 5-10-5; the most common vegetable food. By law, the numbers represent the percentage, BY WEIGHT of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) respectively. “WAIT A MINUTE” you say, “if the 5 the 10 and the 5 are percentages, they only add up to 20% of the bag.” I gotta tell you, you’re really on the ball. Guess what, the rest of the bag is filler! The filler is in there to “make the product easier to spread evenly without burning” as the manufacturers will tell you. This is all true but, the ability to adjust the amount of filler vs. nutrients is a device fertilizer producers can manipulate to make a lower food quality appear better than it is but, more about that later. Anyway, the first number, N, or nitrogen shows how much of the fertilizer is devoted to green, upward growth. The second number P, or phosphorus, shows how much is devoted to root growth and flower & fruit production. The last number K, or potassium is an overall building block that benefits all parts of the plant.
I know that many of you understand all this but I know that many more of you are buying fertilizer based on pretty packaging, celebrity endorsements or tarot cards.
Now that you know this you can walk around the garden center and impress your friends by saying things like, “No, no. You don’t want 10-6-4 for you perennial border. It has too much nitrogen. You need more phosphorus for roots and flowers.” Or, “Say Jason, your lawn is kind of sparse. Maybe you need a lawn food with more phosphorus to help it thicken up.”
While you’re there showing off, you’ll probably notice that each manufacturer has their own “secret formula” that they would like you to believe is better than all the rest. Since these products represent a multi-billion dollar business, you better believe that a lot of time and money has been spent to convince you that their product is better than the rest. Your ignorance of fertilizer products is crucial to their success. Pretty packages and celebrity endorsements are all designed to keep you from asking two key questions. First, WHAT IS THE FORMULA; 5-10-5, 10-6-4, 12-0-0? This I’ve already explained. Remember, these three numbers must, by law, appear on the bag. Often a manufacturer will brag about their formula. What you’ll never hear mentioned is how much their bag weighs. This information is also required to appear on the product but there are no rules that say how large it must appear. Until you know how much the bag weighs, you can’t possibly know what you’re buying. Remember that the three numbers represent the percentage, BY WEIGHT, of the three major nutrients. This means that a higher number on one fertilizer doesn’t necessarily mean that it has more of a nutrient than another product. In other words, the percentages are meaningless until you know what they are a percentage of. If someone asked you if you’d rather have 10% or 50%, you would naturally ask, “Of what?” 50% of $1 is certainly less than 10% of $10. So remember, when you’re looking at those three mysterious numbers, the real mystery is, “Where the heck did they hide the weight on this bag?” Until you find out, you have no way to figure out how much of the bag is filler and how much is actual nutrient. % X weight = what you are getting. While the E.P.A regulates WHAT may be put into these products, there are few rules for HOW CLEARLY the manufacturer explains this information. It’s all there on the package but it’s up to you to figure it out. The best thing to do is to get to know someone at your local garden center that does ”get it” and have him or her assist and educate you. Thanks for the read.

Elementary 8 Puppies
MaggieThis little girl is listed as a collie mix.
She is 9-10 weeks old, has two sets of shots and has been vet checked and wormed.
She loves ids and gets along well with other dogs. She was found with two other puppies in the
woods, abandoned, down south.
There are still two of these puppies left and they would love
a forever home. They are very friendly, about 12-14 weeks old and up to date on shots. Their
other siblings have found home and now they are still waiting. They will be super handsome dogs when grown.
These babies were found on the grounds of an elementary school down south. They are 8-9 weeks old and have been
wormed, vet checked and had first shots. They are good old fashioned
American mix breeds. But they have wonderful little dispositions.

I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. many easy ways to cut back on waste in an offi ce envi-ronment.
· Encourage higher-ups to institute a recycling policy. If you are not the head honcho at work, speak to your boss and encourage him or her to institute an offi ce-wide recy-cling policy. Offi ce paper can be recycled, as can beverage containers, electronic equip-ment and batteries.
· Store digital records. Gone are the days when offi ces needed ample space to store large fi ling cabinets contain-ing important documents. Nowadays companies can
put that space to better use or downsize to smaller of-fi ces thanks to digital stor-age. Documents no longer need to be printed out and stored in fi ling cabinets, when it’s far easier to sim-ply store them as digital fi les backed up on a hard drive or cloud storage. This reduces your offi ce’s paper usage and can even cut back on its energy consumption be-cause rooms no longer must be climate-controlled and il-luminated to store old docu-ments.
· Use paper more wisely. Sometimes offi ce directives or memos must be printed, but such notices that will only circulate internally need not be printed to ap-pear like documents that will be shared with clients or other companies. When circulating internal memos, fi rst ensure they cannot be emailed. If they can, opt for emailing instead of print-ing out copies to be left on employees’ desks. If memos or directives must be dis-tributed via printouts, ask that writers of such memos use smaller fonts and print on both sides of a sheet of paper. The smaller font ul-timately means less paper consumption, as does print-ing on both sides of each sheet of paper.
· Dispose of electronics prop-erly. Energy and resources are needed to manufacture new products, but offi ces
can help conserve energy and preserve those resourc-es by donating or recycling eligible electronics. Regula-tions may now be in place that dictate how certain electronics should be dis-posed of. Ensure your offi ce is following these guidelines. Failing to do so may be crim-inal, and it’s certainly harm-ful to the environment. And before discarding any older electronics, fi rst determine if they can be donated or re-cycled.
· Start an employee carpool-ing program. You and your fellow employees likely drive to work, and every-one driving their own cars to work wastes a consider-able amount of fuel, while all of those cars on the road can be harmful to air qual-ity. Speak with fellow em-ployees who live near you about starting a carpooling program. Such arrange-ments save each member of the carpool money on fuel, and if your community has
commuter lanes for cars that include two or more people, then you might shave a sub-stantial amount of time off your daily commutes as well.
Going green at the offi ce is a great way to benefi t the en-vironment on a much grand-er scale than you might be able to in your private life. Speak with your bosses and coworkers about taking steps to reduce the collec-tive carbon footprint of your offi ce.

Motorists routinely check their tires for proper infl a-tion, top off engine fl uid lev-els and maintain oil change schedules. But some drivers do not understand the im-portance of keeping engine air fi lters clean.
Engine air fi lters are a rela-tively inexpensive vehicle part, but they perform a very important job. For every gal-lon of gas a car burns, it uses the equivalent of 12,000 gal-lons of air, and that air must be fi ltered to help keep an engine clean.
Air fi lters catch all of the dust, grime, insects, sap, leaves, and any other debris that may get sucked up past the air intake of the vehicle’s grill and into the engine it-self. Without the air fi lter, those contaminants may compromise the engine, causing corrosion and abra-sion. If the air fi lter in the en-gine becomes too dirty and is not changed regularly, the engine is starved of air.
Clean air fi lters allow just the right ratio of air to fuel to en-able the engine to function properly. Engines need ad-equate air for the combus-tion process to take place. Without the proper combus-tion levels, vehicles cannot perform properly or effi -ciently and the engine may burn more gas or get fewer miles to the gallon. A dirty fi lter also can rob an engine of power. Drivers may notice sluggish acceleration.
Air fi lters also can get so dirty that the engine stalls completely. But such a prob-lem only develops after con-

siderable neglect.
Air fi lters may not need to be replaced at each and every oil change service call. Many technicians advise replacing the fi lter every 8,000 miles. However, drivers who live in particularly dry and dusty regions may need to replace fi lters more frequently.
Mechanics can often detect when an air fi lter needs to be replaced. If he or she notices the air fi lter is particularly dirty, then it’s probably time to replace it. Replacing the fi lter is a relatively inexpen-sive repair for the amount of performance and peace of mind a new fi lter provides.
