If you step back and try to be objective, the practice of installing a tree inside our home at this time of year seems a bit bizarre. How did all this get started; and when?

The symbolism and use of trees as decorations at this time of year are far older than many of us suspect. It is known, for instance, that pre-Christian Romans displayed decorated ever-greens (oak trees which are evergreen in that part of the world). They lit the tree with candles and often topped the tree with a sun symbol. The ancient Celts of the British Isles also orna-mented oak trees with apples and candles to offer thanks to the sun during the solstice period.

Many of us can still remember when the Christmas tree wasn’t put up until Christmas Eve. This tradition likely had its roots (no pun intended, well...maybe) in the English tradition of bringing home the Yule log on Christmas Eve. The Yule log was generally a large stump, often including the roots, and was decorated with mistletoe, holly and other greenery. The log was lighted with a bit of the previous year’s log (thus protecting the house from fi re for the upcoming year) and needed to be kept burning for at least twelve hours to insure continued good fortune.

With the advent of central heating, the appeal of the Yule log has been all but forgotten.

The evergreen tree as the tree of choice for solstice celebrating appears to have its origins in the Christianizing of the Germanic tribes of Eastern Europe. Some of the earliest accounts tell of St. Boniface dedicating the fi r tree to the Christ Child with the oath “You are the light of the world, a tree ever green” to counter the sacred oak of Odin in the eighth century.

Other accounts credit Martin Luther as the fi rst to bring home a cut evergreen tree and decorate it with candles that symbolize the stars in the sky over Bethlehem the night Christ was born.

Hundreds of years passed until the tradition of decorating evergreen trees at Christmas became common. It wasn’t until 1841 when King Albert displayed a decorated evergreen tree in his palace that the tradition took hold in English speaking countries.

Like the American people, American Holiday celebrations have become a melting pot of customs and traditions brought to our shores from the older cultures of our forefathers. The evergreen, ancient symbol of life ever lasting is still included as the bright focal point of a celebration of rebirth, light and life.

Whatever the origins of the practice, I love the smell of a fresh Balsam Fir when I bring it inside. The trick is to keep the tree hydrated so the needles stay on and the tree stay fresh and fragrant. The fi rst step is to get a fresh tree. When you’re out in the tree lot picking out your tree, bent the little branch tips to make sure they are supple, not brittle. With Thanksgiving as late as it is this year, all the fi rs should be in fi ne shape. Beware of spruce trees which are notorious for falling apart quickly once they’re cut and brought inside.

Next, make sure to make a fresh cut on the base of the tree right before you bring it inside. The reason this is so important is because the tree has sucked air into the bottom-most cells of the trunk. Even if the tree is placed in water, it can’t absorb it because the fi rst cells at the base are clogged with air. A fresh cut exposes fresh cells that can absorb water and sent it along to the cells above right out to the branches and needles. Most tree lots will offer to make this fresh cut for you. This is fi ne if you’re going to rush home and get the tree into water within and hour. If it will be longer than that, you might as well wait and make your own fresh cut on the tree at home.

Make sure that your tree stand is clean before you put your tree into it. If your tree stand is like mine, it spends most of its time in the shed gathering dust. If you don’t clean this dust out, it will mix with the water the tree is absorbing and clog up those all important cells that you just exposed at the base of the truck when you made your fresh cut. When you place the tree into the stand, fi ll the stand up with very hot water. Hot water is absorbed more quickly than cold water so the tree will re-hydrate as quickly as possible. You don’t need to use hot water every time you add water to the stand; just the fi rst time. Make sure that the tree stand always has water in it. If you let it run dry, the tree will suck air into the bottom cells again and it won’t be able to absorb water until another fresh cut is made. This isn’t likely to hap-pen once the tree is decorated. Remember: Fresh Tree, Fresh Cut and Fresh Water. Thanks for the read.

GIFT CERTIFICATES AVAILABLEGIFT CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE

Deciding on and paying for holiday gifts can be a chal-lenge under the best cir-cumstances. But then there are the inevitable “sticky situations” that can leave even the most experienced gift-givers scratching their heads. In the hopes of dodging major gift gaffes this holiday season, here are eight tips for gracious giving and receiving.

* Review your gift list each year to determine if any relationships have changed and require a shift in your gift-giving plan.

* Don’t ask non-family members on your gift list what they would like. This not only spoils the sur-prise, but puts pressure on recipients to gauge how much you want to spend and requires them to get you something in return.

* Don’t feel obligated to match what others spend. Buying gifts based on what others spend is both unnecessary and can lead to excessive expenditures.

* For workplace gifts, adhere to the company’s policies and make sure

A quick guide to gift-giving

etiquette

that gifts are given out of ap-preciation, not expectation.

* Including a gift receipt is a good idea and avoids po-tentially awkward situations when an item doesn’t fi t or doesn’t work.

* Give holiday tips to those individuals whose service you count on throughout the year, such as hairstylists, babysit-ters, dog walkers, etc. An easy rule of thumb for holiday sea-son tips is to double the usual tip. For household employees, give one week’s pay.

* If someone surprises you with a gift, the best bet is to re-spond honestly. Let the giver know that you are surprised, touched and appreciative as well as a bit embarrassed that you don’t have a gift in return. Then let it go and add his/her name to your gift list for the following year.

* Don’t arrive at holiday gatherings empty-handed. A small gift, bottle of wine or

contribution to the evening’s edibles is the right way to thank your hosts for their in-vitation.

* Acknowledging gift givers is a must, but formal, written thank you cards are optional. While handwritten notes are always preferable and greatly appreciated, e-mails are in-creasingly acceptable -- espe-cially for young people.

* Regifting is now considered a (mostly) acceptable practice, as long as it’s done thought-fully, tastefully and within the following guidelines:

- The regifted item should not be homemade or made espe-

cially for you.

- The item should be new, unused and in its original packaging, along with in-structions.

- Be sure to remove all previous wrapping and gift tags.

- Don’t regift to friends or family members who have a reputation for returning things they don’t like. You don’t want to be asked for a gift receipt.

- Make certain that the original giver and the new recipient will never cross paths.

Last Week’s AnswersLast Week’s AnswersDo You Have It In Your Heart To Help A Rescued Throwaway Cat Named Sophia!

She was left to die, abandoned because she was getting older and would need some care. She showed up on someone’s back

step and cried for help. Th e cat that came to be named So-phia was on her last legs from ill health and starvation. As a tropical storm from Hurricane Irene was about to hit the northeast, Sophia was saved and given shelter in a family’s garage. A local rescue group, Capital District Humane As-sociation (CDHA), has provided vet care. But, Sophia needs a loving home. She is a sweet cat who loves to be petted and held. Her favorite thing is to snuggle in your lap and give you kisses. Please consider helping Sophia by adoption or a contribution to CDHA.

Salary might garner all the glo-ry, but many times additional benefi ts are just as signifi cant when one is deciding to accept or decline a job offer. The of-fer with the highest salary isn’t necessarily the ultimate deal for everyone. Instead, it’s best to consider additional benefi ts before making such an impor-tant decision.

* Retirement: Pensions are largely a thing of the past, but companies that do provide pension plans should merit heavy consideration. But even if most applicants are unlikely to fi nd a company with a pen-sion plan, there is the issue of a 401(k) and whether a com-pany will match an employ-ee’s contributions. Companies will typically only match up to a certain percentage, but a company that does match em-ployee contributions should be very appealing.

* Vacation: Vacation time and how employees earn it is rela-tively standard, but some com-panies do offer better packages than others. In general, em-ployees who have been with the company 1 to 3 years get two weeks of vacation time, while those who have been with a company for 4 to 10 years typically receive three weeks vacation time. Howev-er, not all companies adhere to this standard, and some might require employees to work as many as six years before earn-ing a third week of vacation. Applicants must decide if sal-ary or additional vacation time

Perks go beyond dollars and centsPerks go beyond dollars and centsis a higher priority.

* Medical insurance: Medi-cal insurance varies greatly depending on the company. Larger companies might of-fer more affordable medical insurance, giving them a dis-tinct advantage over smaller companies when applicants have a spouse and children to consider.

* Holidays: Holidays are typi-cally a minor consideration, but some applicants might pre-fer a job that guarantees they get all of the major holidays off, even if it means taking less in salary. Applicants who typi-cally travel signifi cant distanc-es during the holidays might want a job that gives them an extra day, such as the day after Thanksgiving, rather than one that requires they use a vaca-tion or personal day to travel during the holidays.

* Tuition assistance: Some com-panies provide tuition assistance to employees who want to con-

tinue their education. Such assis-tance can be worth thousands of dollars, mitigating any concerns about lower salary offers.

Electric cars are poised to take over the automotive market in the near future. Their ability to reduce de-pendence on fossil fuels and their high MPG ratings place electric and hybrid cars at the top of the list for environmentally friendly vehicles. However, one ca-veat is that electric cars may disturb the distribution of electric power.

Experts warn that electric

Plug-In Problems With Electric CarsPlug-In Problems With Electric Carscars may drain the power grid at the local level if their popularity catches on. Already about a dozen auto manufacturers plan on re-leasing electric models be-tween the years of 2010 and 2012.

The average electric car requires roughly the same amount of electrical power that a small house might consume. Because the popularity of electric cars is

expected to increase in con-centrated geographic loca-tions, there could be heavy demand on already overly taxed transformers. It’s a very real possibility that a high concentration of elec-tric cars in a given area may cause power outages.

Most car owners would plug in electric cars at night when demand is generally

less. Still, experts warn that

the current power grid may

not be up to the task of han-

dling the widespread use of

electric cars. Research is

still underway to determine

what would need to be done

to create a smarter power

grid, one up for the chal-

lenge of handling increased

use of electric cars.

It is written to and for the many adults and teens who stutter. The 192-page book is available at most public libraries including those in Del-mar, Cohoes, Guilderland, Loudonville, and Ravena. This book outlines a self-therapy program, which describes what the person who stutters can do to work towards better communication. The book is available free to all public libraries.
