HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing prob- lem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech- language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD de- signed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stutter- ing sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail info@stutteringhelp. org, or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org. SEARCH AND RESCUE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED CAPITAL DISTRICT - The Tri-State Emergency team is recruiting volunteers to provide wild land and underwater searches. This includes all aspects of field and underwater search. The tri-state emergency team responds when requested by NYS forest rangers and other police agencies through- out New York State, Western Vermont and Massachusetts. We are looking for certified scuba divers, experienced boat handlers, and people who en- joy hiking and the outdoors in general who wish to help people in need. The team will provide training and complete support as needed. Our headquarters is located in Waterford. Applicants need not live in Water- ford to volunteer. BUYING GLASSES ONLINE

    by Lawrence Cusma, OD9 Gleason Road

    Scotia, NY 12302

    EYES ON HEALTH

    For further information, call our office at 399-6368

    Buying glasses online may seem convenient, but the conse-quences of making an incorrect or uninformed purchase could cost you more than time and money in the long run. Eyeglasses are an investment in your health and must be custom-fitted to meet your particular prescriptive needs. One size does not fit all, where eyeglasses are concerned.

    A recent study reinforces the drawbacks of online orders. The study concluded:

    Of every 200 glasses ordered, only 154 pairs were actually received;

    44.8% had incorrect prescription or safety issues;

    29% had at least one lens fail to match the ordered prescription;

    19% of adult lenses failed impact resistance testing; and

    25% of childrens lenses failed impact resistance testing.

    Purchasing eyeglasses from a local optometrist is the first and foremost recommendation, but if you are still interested in mak-ing a purchase online, make sure you do your homework. The fit, lens type, lens options, and the proper measurements are all important things you need to be aware of before making your final decision. After all, the way a pair of glasses look on you, does not always mean you will be able to see better!

    Revelers look forward to Oktoberfest for vari-ous reasons. Great food, abundant drinks and fes-tive music entertain the masses come Oktoberfest, so its no surprise that this German-inspired tradition is popular the world-over. While Oktoberfest is often thought of as an adults-only celebration, parts of the party can be modifi ed to make the event more in-clusive of younger guests.

    Oktoberfest is the worlds longest fair, running for sixteen days from late Sep-

    tember to the fi rst weekend in Octo-ber. More than six million people from around the world attend the event in Munich, Germany, each year. Smaller Ok-toberfest parties are held else-where, and the theme can be an interesting one for individuals who want to enjoy a harvest party that does not involve Hal-loween and costumes.

    Including children in Okto-berfest celebrations is rela-tively easy. All you need to do is off er activities that do not involve alcoholic bev-erages. Try these ideas to get started.

    Stein relay

    Both adults and children can participate in this event, as long as party hosts can keep track of the beverages inside the steins. Adults can use beer, while kids cups can be fi lled with apple cider or root beer. Participants take chances running their fi lled steins over to a serv-ing tray and then carrying back the full tray without spilling. If any beverages are spilled, the person has to take a drink and then return to have the cup refi lled. The team whose members all complete the race fi rst is declared the winner.

    Polka freeze dance

    If a polka band is part of the festivi-ties, ask them to participate in a game of freeze dance. O t h e r w i s e , hosts can use prerecorded polka mu-sic. Players

    dance to the music until it stops, and once it does, they have to freeze. Any-one who moves after the music has stopped is out. The last person standing is the winner.

    Pretzel-making contest

    Have children mold pre-made dough (pizza or crescent roll dough) into the shapes of pretzels. Pro-vide diff erent toppings, from salt to nuts to sesame seeds, that kids can use to adorn their pretzels. The pretzels can be judged on form and fl avor.

    Barrel or sack races

    Children can participate in races against the adults to see who has the most dex-terity and speed. Plastic or wooden barrels can be rolled, or players can use burlap sacks for races.

    Carnival entertainment

    Since Oktoberfest is a large fair, carnival-type activities can make for a great and appropriate party. Party hosts can set up dunk tanks, a ring toss, darts, and food-eating contests to round out the list of festivities. Setting aside an area for a dance fl oor and hiring a band or deejay are some additional ways to create a fun atmosphere.

    Oktoberfest is a great op-portunity to gather with friends and family to en-joy great food and drinks and fun games. Explore the various ways to make the party appropriate for guests of all ages, particu-larly by including child-friendly events everyone can enjoy.
