Year 2 Neon (2N)As yellow as a banana!

Soft like a cloud!

As black as the midnight sky!

Squeaky like a mouse!

As part of our Integrated English and Science unit titled ‘Toy Stories’, Year 2 students have been exploring creative and descriptive language to describe features of their favourite toys. We have been learning to include many vivid sensory details in our writing that paint a picture and appeal to all of a reader’s five senses. Similes, alliteration, onomatopoeia and repetition are some of the figurative language features that we’ve been learning about to include in our descriptive writing. By including these we are creating interesting and engaging written pieces.

Below are some Simile Monsters created by 2Neon students:

A body as thin as pegs.

Eyes as big as the sea.

Fingers as pointy as the big hand on a clock.

Evie P

A head as dark as night.

A nose as red as lava.

Fingers as sharp as glass.

Jake B

A head as skinny as a straw.

A nose as cold as Antarctica.

Feet as flat as a tongue.

Uma U

A body as thin as paper.

A head as hefty as a dinosaur.

Feet as red as a heart.

Grandparent’s DayFriday 11 September sees us welcome grandparents into our classrooms for the annual Grandparent’s Day. We are again excited to extend this invitation to include the grandparents of our Year 5 and 6 students. Celebrations will begin at the Sunshine Avenue campus at 8:40 and 11:00am at the Mahers Lane campus. Further information to come next week.

Kids Dream DayKids Dream Day was a fantastic success again this year. It was wonderful to see all of the children and staff dressed up as their favourite book characters. Our Year 6 peer support leaders did an amazing job facilitating literacy activities with their groups which the children really enjoyed. Thank you to all families for the generous donations and for purchasing wristbands. The Isabella and Marcus Foundation are extremely grateful for our school community support.

The third day saw a trip to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat, a highlight of the trip for many. At Sovereign Hill we were exposed to the life of a twelve year old on the gold fields. Some students struck it rich when panning for gold but unfortunately nobody made their fortune that day. Learning was enhanced by the Blood On The Southern Cross sound and light show.

Students thought that the Melbourne Camp was the best one so far and have learnt a lot about Australian History.

By Patrick Sheard, 6D

Rev Chad and I were privileged to be invited to attend the Year 6 trip to Melbourne last week and despite our close call at the Eureka Skydeck, we had a wonderful time sharing this adventure with an incredibly well behaved, courteous and considerate group of students. At every venue we visited comments were made to Lindisfarne staff about how polite and well mannered the Year 6 students were. The staff at the educational facilities also made note of how knowledgeable and inquisitive the students were. We were very proud to be accompanying these Year 6 students.

Michele Chandler, Head of Primary

Year 6 Melbourne ExperienceYear 6 Rush To Gold FieldsLast week saw sixty Lindisfarne Year 6 students journey through time and the historical streets of Melbourne and Ballarat. We experienced a full insight in to the belly of the MCG and the memorabilia of the historical ground. After the sun had gone down, we visited the Eureka Sky Deck. It felt like you were standing on the city and had a three hundred and sixty degree view. There was even a cage in which the only thing stopping you from a terror drop followed by a spot of death was a rail and some wire.

After a morning well spent at Melbourne Zoo we headed into Chinatown. It was here at the Chinese Heritage Museum that we were given an insight into Chinese culture and traditions and what life was like for Chinese migrants during the Gold Rush.

Early Learning CentreKindergartenKindergarten Swimming ProgramOur first two swimming sessions were a lot of fun and provided an excellent stimulus for writing practice.

Here are some examples of the great writing the Kindergarten children are starting to produced:

“First we got changed and we go to swimming on the bus. We went in the swimming pool and we did diving and we did swimming and then we did some backstroke. It was fun!”

Rishi KG

“First we got changed then we got in the pool. I like swimming!”

Isabella KG

“Today we went on the bus. I sat in the front. When we arrived the lady told us our groups and we started swimming and played a lot of fun games. Then when we were done we got back on the bus and got changed and the bell rang.”

Frank KG

“First we went to school and then the class got changed and then we went on the bus. When we got off the bus we got in the pool. My favourite bit was when we did looking for my goggles and then we did more activities. Then we went to school and had our morning tea.”

Maja KG

PreschoolExploring Our Shadow - Preschool JoeysWe began this term by reading ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ story. The children were asked questions, encouraging them to use their problem solving skills to work out how the little mouse had made himself look so big and strong.

We discussed the concept of ‘shadows’ and used the sunshine and the outdoor environment to further investigate different shapes made from shadows. We continued to explore the children’s ideas that stemmed from this.

Our Joey friends were very excited to take turns to stand up and make their own body shadows onto the concrete. We took photos and the children used different objects and equipment from around the outdoor yard to change their shadow shapes. Taking photos enabled the children to use their observation and language skills to describe the shadows they made back to their teacher. Other experiences included tracing around the shadows using chalk, reflection paintings and telling stories using shadow puppetry.

Commonwealth Bank School Banking Update – Please Read Concerns have been raised regarding the ‘Cosmic Light Beam Torch’ reward item due to the inclusion of four button batteries that can be accessed by unscrewing the back of the torch.

Whilst this reward has been independently tested and deemed to meet relevant product standards the Commonwealth Bank have made the decision to proactively withdraw this item from the School Banking Rewards Program.

Parents/Guardians are requested to dispose of any ‘Cosmic Light Beam Torches’ their child may have already received as part of the Rewards Program. Students who have previously received a ‘Cosmic Light Beam Torch’ are welcome to redeem an alternative reward item.
