Acknowledgement of Country. We, the parishioners of the Banyo Nundah Catholic Parish, acknowledge the Turrbal people, the Traditional Custodians who have walked upon and cared for this land for thousands of years. We acknowledge the continued deep spiritual attachment and relationship of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to this country and commit ourselves to the ongoing journey of Reconciliation. We pay our respects to any first nation peoples who are present among us. “……MAY THEY ALL BE ONE” (John 17:20) The Word of God (Gospel) for Today: Act now to avoid crisis After addressing the 'Pharisees and the scribes' in last Sunday's gospel, Jesus now teaches his disciples once again. The subject matter is the proper use of wealth. This troublesome parable about the dishonest steward looks both forward and backward. It starts the same way as next Sunday's parable about Lazarus, 'There was a rich man' (Luke 16:1,19), and in many details looks back both to the parables of the rich fool (12:13-21; Sunday 18) and to the prodigal son (15:11-32; Sunday 24) who, like the steward in this Sunday's gospel, squandered his possessions (15:13; 16:1). The parables of the rich fool and the dishonest steward find someone in a situation requiring action. The rich man with bountiful harvest and the steward both ask themselves the same question: 'What shall I do?' (12:17; 16:3). Each answers his own question: the rich man says, 'this is what I shall do'(12:18), while the steward says, 'I know what I shall do' (16:4). What is surprising is that while the rich man's plan to build a larger storehouse seems reasonable, God calls him a 'fool' and demands of him his life 'this night' (12:20), but the dishonest steward is commended by his master (literally, 'lord kurios') 'for acting prudently' (16:8). The folly of the rich man was to think that his bountiful harvest would guarantee a future of comfort and pleasure. By contrast the steward recognised his situation as a crisis that required immediate and decisive action. With his employment and security about to end, he put his master's debtors in the position of owing him (the steward) a favour: this quid pro quo obligation which the debtors would be honour-bound to repay guaranteed the steward's future survival. The parable doesn't comment on the morality of the steward's actions, only his decisiveness in recognising a crisis and acting immediately to avert disaster. This is the skill 'the children of light' must learn from 'the children of this world'. This recalls the sayings about the narrow door (13:22- 30; Sunday 21): act now before it is too late. (Taken from Liturgia) From Father Gerry (St Joseph’s and St Anthony’s Bracken Ridge/Bald Hills Parish) This 2019 Season Creation (Sept 1 st Oct 4 th ) has as its theme: "The Web of Life: Biodiversity as God's blessing". The Care for Creation group of St Joseph’s and St Anthony’s Bracken Ridge / Bald Hills Parish in Brisbane has produced a prayer card on biodiversity. Rosie Bugden from the group wrote the prayer and did a sketch of an Eastern Curlew, a large migratory wader. Many of them fly down from Siberia and other parts annually to Moreton Bay. It is estimated that Eastern Curlew lose 40% of their body weight on the journey. The mangroves within the boundaries of some of our parishes in the Archdiocese are their destination. For example, Tinchi Tamba Wetlands in Bald Hills, Boondall Wetlands, several areas from the Sunshine Coast and Bribie Island to the Redcliffe Peninsula and other areas of Moreton Bay. Two well-known areas are the western sides of Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island. Below is an explanation and an invitation from the Care for Creation Group to join in the prayer. They have adopted the Eastern Curlew as emblematic of God's creatures whose existence is threatened by habitat changes in our world, and our prayer, inspired by Laudato Si' (On Care for Our Common Home), centres on Pope Francis' call for us to care for God's creation and creatures. As you may already be aware our part of the world on Brisbane's northern bayside, and parts of the east and north coasts of Australia down to Tasmania are part of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway of migratory shorebirds, including the critically endangered Eastern Curlew. The Eastern Curlew spends part of the year on our shores from about September to April when it heads back to the northern hemisphere. Some curlews fly as far as eastern Russia - 13,000km. The East Asian-Australasian Flyway includes parts of New Zealand, Korea, Japan, China, the Philippines, and eastern Russia. Our Care for Creation group is inviting other parishes and interested parties along the flyway to join with us in praying this prayer. The Columban Fathers and the Good Samaritan Sisters are among those helping us spread the prayer to their communities and parishes along the flyway, as well as in Australia. “……MAY THEY ALL BE ONE” (John 17:20)

The Word of God (Gospel) for Today: Act now to avoid crisis After addressing the 'Pharisees and the scribes' in last Sunday's gospel, Jesus now teaches his disciples once again.

What is surprising is that while the rich man's plan to build a larger

storehouse seems reasonable, God calls him a 'fool' and demands of him his life 'this night' (12:20), but the dishonest steward is commended by his master (literally, 'lord kurios') 'for acting prudently' (16:8).

The parable doesn't comment on

the morality of the steward's actions, only his decisiveness in recognising a crisis and acting immediately to avert disaster. This is the skill 'the children of light' must learn from 'the children of this world'. This recalls the sayings about the narrow door (13:22-30; Sunday 21): act now before it is too late. The Holy Father’s Intentions for September Universal: That politicians, scientists and economists work

together to protect the world’s seas and oceans.

The month of September is dedicated to the Seven Sorrows (or Dolours) of Mary

Stewardship “No servant can serve two masters. He will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (wealth).” LUKE 16:13 Is money a “god” that you put before God? Giving money to support the Church and other charity is a pillar of our

faith, just like attending Mass every Sunday and participating in parish ministry. Giving money frees us from

being a slave to money. It increases our dependence on God and our trust that God will provide all that we need.

A VOCATION VIEW: Do you think it is the Lord who is motivating you to make lots of money, to

use people, to grab for power, to attend to the needs of others?
