Another summer is upon us and only at the very last minutedid our patience pay off with the news that Terrence Malick’sThe Tree of Life - its release controversially delayed in orderto compete at Cannes - would be out in this programme.Only Malick’s fifth film in nearly 40 years, it went on to win the top prize at the festival and adds to that greatfilmmaker’s personal mythology. It might not be foreveryone but it’s the closest thing to ‘great’ filmmakingyou’ll see this year. With other new releases including Potiche and The Princessof Montpensier plus digitised classics such as Gilda andLast Year in Marienbad, who cares what the weather does. Enjoy the summer... enjoy the movies.Colin Orr, Film Programmer

This inspiring story of the power of education and the right to equality is set in Kenya in 2003, where Maruge, an 84-year-old village elder uses a government initiative to introduce free primary schooling to claim the education he has always craved. A former Mau-Mau fighter, Maruge's desire to learn to read and write has been sparked but when he presents himself at the local school gates, he finds head teacher Jane alone in being sympathetic to his cause.Shooting in the stunning Kenyan Rift Valley, and using a real school and its pupils, gives the film an authentic sense of place andcommunity, and the children's uninhibited, natural performances are a joy to watch. There is humour woven throughout, and aheartwarming affection and mutual respectbetween the dignified old man and his passionately progressive young teacher.

The Tree of Life [15]

Friday 5 August / 8pmSaturday 6 August / 5pmSunday 7 - Thursday 11 August / 8pmDirector Terrence MalickCast Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica ChastainUSA 2011 / Colour / 2hr 18mWinner of the Palme d’Or at this year’s CannesFilm Festival, Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Lifeis the film event of the summer, perhaps of theyear. It is unashamedly visionary cinema thattells the impressionistic story of a Midwesternfamily in the 1950s and follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationshipwith his father. Jack finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. We see how both brutenature and spiritual grace shape not only ourlives as individuals and families, but all life.

“Malick makes an awful lot of other film-makers look timid and negligible by comparison”Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

“The Tree of Life is a film of vast ambition and deep humility, attempting no less than to encompass all of existence and view it through the prism of a few infinitesimal lives. The only other film I've seen with this boldness of vision isKubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, and it lacked Malick’s fierce evocation of humanfeeling. There were once several directors who yearned to make no less than amasterpiece, but now there are only a few.” Roger Ebert

Gilda [PG]

Friday 12 August / 8pmSaturday 13 August / 5pmSunday 14 August / 8pmDirector Charles VidorCast Rita Hayworth, Glenn Ford, George MacreadyUSA 1946 / B&W / 1hr 50m“There never was a woman like Gilda” reads the tag on the poster and in truth this ultimatefemme fatale role was to haunt Rita Hayworth’stumultuos personal life, placing an expectationupon the most intoxicating of stars that even she could not live up to. Hayworth, who wasmarried and divorced five times, including to both Orson Welles and Prince Aly Khan, later stated that “every man I knew... went to bed with Gilda and woke up with me”. Set in Argentina, this noir tale of an Americangambler and a dangerous casino owner who vye for the affection of the eponymousGilda can still be counted as one of the most darkly erotic tales to come out of Hollywood. If Casablanca can be pared down to love and war then Gilda is simply sex and money - except there’s nothing simple about sex or money.
