First of all I’d like to welcome our fans back to The Hive as well as the travelling Chesterfield team and fan base.

I’m hoping the sign of a good team is how they bounce back from disappointment.

That tends to be a good quality. We’ve played some good stuff in these first four games – we’ve taken two wins and a draw so it’s not all bad.

Of course, we’re all frustrated and disappointed. There’s nothing I wanted more than to remain unbeaten and even if we’d taken a point on Tuesday night, that would’ve extended the run and kept us going well.

We have room for improvement and as it turns out, it was a last minute defeat which we’re all bitterly disappointed about.

It’s how we respond to that disappointment which is going to be crucial in the Chesterfield.

If we’re cut-throat and ruthless in the final third and we take the one or two chances that fall our way, it could be a completely different game.

They could have to come out and attack a bit more, but what I want to see is the urgency and quality in our play. I want us to move the ball quickly and I just want the maximum out of everyone.

The fans will always have a part to play. Always back the boys – always get behind them and that’s all I can ask. I’d love The Hive to be a busier place on matchday for everyone concerned because they can really drive the boys on for us.

Chesterfield have played a certain system throughout their early games and obviously, haven’t started how they would’ve wanted to. So there may be a potential change in system or change in personnel.

But don’t get me wrong, this is a team that’s going to want to get their season started and they’ll be mindful of our strengths and our weaknesses, so we can’t give them any encouragement in the game.

We have to stamp our authority on it in the

first minute.

Enjoy the match and#LetsBeeTogether

Darren

I don’t think we played poorly against Dover – they had a game plan set up and it worked perfectly for them in terms of the result.

We need to be brighter in the final third. The ‘keeper’s made some great saves at 0-0 so it could’ve been a lot different but those are the fine margins in football, but thankfully, we don’t have to wait too long to put it right this weekend.

With Dave (Tutonda) getting injured it changed our game a lot. Harry (Taylor) going left back changed the dynamics of the team even though he put in a fantastic shift at the back.

But I think we just didn’t do enough in their half with the ball to really threaten them in the first half. If one of our chances went in: Medy’s header or Dunne’s shot that was saved, then we probably would’ve come away with three points or even taken a draw, which wouldn’t have been the worst result in the world.

I’ll take responsibility personally to get the boys going again but we’re a good group and we’re professional enough to show that we’re capable of bouncing back as quickly as we can.

It won’t be an easy game this afternoon. They have a great manager and although they probably haven’t started the season as well as they would have liked, they will come good and Saturday is an opportunity for them to kick-start their season.

We’ve got to be wary of that, but we must look at ourselves. Bouncing back and getting the three points will put us back where we belong near the top of the table.

I’m expecting a tough game, but I’m sure we can

do enough to get a win

Come on you Bees!

Chesterfield Football Club is a professional association football club based in the town of Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. The team competes in the National League, the fifth tier of the English football league system. Chesterfield play their home games at the 10,504 capacity Proact Stadium, having moved from their historic home of Saltergate during the summer of 2010. Notable players include record appearance holder Dave Blakey, who played in 617 of Chesterfield’s league games, and 162 league goal club record holder Ernie Moss. The club contests numerous local rivalries, though Nottinghamshire club Mansfield Town are their main rivals.

Chesterfield FC was officially established in 1866 though it would be the third incarnation of that name that turned professional in 1891 and changed its name to Chesterfield Town. Town entered the FA Cup for the first time the following year, and competed in the Sheffield & District League and Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup, before joining the Midland League in 1896–97. A third-place finish in 1898–99 resulted in a successful application to the Football League Second Division for the

following season. After ten seasons in the Second Division they failed to gain re-election to the League and returned to the Midland League in 1909, finishing as champions in 1909–10. The club entered liquidation in 1915, and were reformed as Chesterfield Municipal in April 1919. They again rejoined the Midland League and finished as champions in 1919–20.

The club was renamed to Chesterfield FC in December 1920, and became founder members of the Third Division North in 1921–22. They marked their tenth season in the division, 1930–31, by winning the title, though only managed two seasons in the Second Division before suffering relegation. They again won the Third Division North title in 1935–36, and after World War II recorded their best ever league finish of fourth in the Second Division in 1946–47. However they were relegated again in 1950–51, and were relegated out of the Third Division in 1960–61. Chesterfield won the Fourth Division in 1969–70, and then won the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1980. After relegation in 1982–83, they again won the Fourth Division title in 1984–85, though would again be relegated after five seasons in the third tier. They secured their return to the third tier with a 2–0 win over Bury in the 1995 play-off Final at Wembley.

Chesterfield reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1997, but were relegated back to the basement division in 1999–2000. They made an immediate return to the third tier after securing a Third Division automatic promotion place in 2000–01. Relegated in 2006–07, they secured the League Two title in 2010–11, but were relegated from League One the following season. In 2011, Dave Allen took full ownership of the club and oversaw progress to two League Trophy finals; Chesterfield won the trophy with a 2–0 victory over Swindon Town in 2012, and finished as runners-up after losing 3–1 to Peterborough United in 2014. Chesterfield were crowned champions of League Two for a record fourth time in 2013–14, but remained in League One for just three seasons. Two consecutive relegations saw the club relegated out of the English Football League at the end of the 2017–18 season.

Potentially five or more teams have been called Chesterfield Football Club at different times. A Derbyshire Times newspaper report from 2 January 1864 noted a scheduled game between “Chesterfield and Norton football clubs”, suggesting that a Chesterfield F.C., whether loosely or formally organised, was active from at least 1863.

A second Chesterfield F.C. was formally created as an offshoot of Chesterfield Cricket Club in October 1867. The cricket and football clubs moved to the Recreation Ground at Saltergate in 1871, the same year that they became separate entities. However, a souring of the relationship between the two led to the closure of the football club in 1881, when it found itself homeless.[6] Many players joined other local sides, notably Chesterfield Livingstone, a club that took up using the Saltergate site, and Chesterfield Spital, a team which competed in the early years of the FA Cup.

Three years later, in 1884, a third entity called Chesterfield Football Club was formed, again making its home at Saltergate. It drew in players from the preceding club and both Chesterfield Livingstone and Chesterfield Spital, though records show Spital continued as a separate club. After changing its name to Chesterfield Town, the club turned professional in 1891 and won several local trophies in the following two seasons, entering the FA Cup for the first time in 1892. For the 1892–93 season, the club wore an extraordinary playing strip of all dark blue with the Union Jack emblazoned across the front of the shirt. Chesterfield joined the Midland League in 1896, and successfully applied for a place in the Second Division of the Football League at the start of the 1899–1900 season, finishing seventh. After finishing bottom of the League three years in a row, the club failed to gain re-election to the League in 1909, returning to the Midland League.

In 1915 Chesterfield Town was put into voluntary liquidation and a new club with the same name was formed by a local restaurateur to play wartime football using locally based “guests” from Football League clubs. It lasted only two years before its management and players were suspended by the FA for illegal payments and the club shut down. The current Chesterfield F.C was formed on 24 April 1919 by Chesterfield Borough Council, seeing it as a way to spearhead improvements in local recreational provision. Initially called Chesterfield Municipal, the club made great strides on the pitch in its first season, lifting the Midland League title – and did so despite three changes of management. However, The Football Association and the Football League had already made clear their vehement opposition to a council-run club and ultimately forced it to cut its ties and become independent, reflected in a name change to Chesterfield F.C. in December 1920.

In 1921–22, Chesterfield became a founder member of the new Football League Third Division North. Following the arrival of new manager Ted Davison in 1926 and chairman Harold Shentall in 1928, the club

won the Third Division North title in the 1930–31 season with an 8–1 victory over Gateshead on the final day, and were promoted to the Second Division. Relegation followed in 1933, but the Third Division North title was again won in 1936.

After the war the club achieved their best League position, finishing fourth in the Second Division in 1946–47. However, the sale of several players at the end of the season reduced their overall quality, and Chesterfield were relegated at the end of the 1950–51 season. They were placed in the Third Division on its formation at the start of the 1958–59 season; future England international goalkeeper Gordon Banks made his professional debut in a Third Division game in November 1958, but was sold to Leicester City for a then-club record £7,000 fee at the end of the season. In 1961 Chesterfield were relegated to the Fourth Division for the first time.

Chesterfield spent eight seasons in the Fourth Division, earning promotion as champions in 1969–70 under manager Jimmy McGuigan. The Anglo-Scottish Cup was won in 1981. The club was relegated in 1983–84, and won the Fourth Division title the following season. Financial difficulties forced Chesterfield Borough Council to bail out the club in 1985 and the club’s training ground to be sold. Relegation followed in 1988–89; Chesterfield reached the play-off competition a year later, but were beaten by Cambridge United in the play-off final. The arrival of John Duncan as manager in 1993 was followed in the 1994–95 season by play-off victories over local rivals Mansfield Town and Bury to earn promotion to the redesignated Second Division. The 1996–97 season saw Chesterfield beat six clubs including Premier League side Nottingham Forest to reach the semi-final of the FA Cup for the first time. The semi-final match against Middlesbrough was contentiously drawn 3–3 after extra time; Chesterfield lost the replay 3–0.

The club were relegated to the Third Division in 2000 following a run of 21 games without a win, and chairman Norton Lea was replaced by Darren Brown. The following year, Chesterfield were deducted nine points for financial irregularities after Brown attempted to avoid paying Chester City the fee agreed by the FA for Luke Beckett. Amid mounting evidence of fraud, he relinquished control of the club in March 2001 and ownership passed to a hastily organised fans’ group, the Chesterfield Football Supporters Society. Massive debts run up by Brown forced the club into administration, but the team still secured the division’s final automatic promotion place. (Brown was later sentenced to four years in prison following a Serious Fraud Office investigation that led to charges including false accounting, furnishing false information and theft).

Chesterfield were relegated to League Two at the end of the 2006–07 season, although they did reach the regional

semi-final of the League Trophy and the fourth round of the League Cup in the same year. The club departed its historic home at Saltergate at the end of the 2009–10 season, and moved to newly built B2net Stadium. Chesterfield were promoted to League One after winning the League Two title in 2010–11 season. They went on to win the EFL Trophy for the first time in March 2012, defeating Swindon Town 2–0 in the final. However they were relegated out of League One the following month, before again returning to the third tier as League Two champions at the end of the 2013–14 season.

Chesterfield secured sixth-place in League One at the end of the 2014–15 campaign, and went on to lose 4–0 on aggregate to Preston North End in the two-legged play-off semi-final. On 14 November 2016, majority shareholder Dave Allen resigned from his roles as chairman and director of the club. This signalled a crisis, and four days later a further four directors resigned from their roles. It was announced that Chesterfield was openly up for sale, and desperately needed some kind of investment in order to avoid administration. Mike Warner was installed as chairman on 19 November. On 8 January 2017, manager Danny Wilson, with Gary Caldwell being announced as his replacement nine days later. On 16 September 2017, manager Caldwell was sacked after three wins in 29 competitive games, giving him the worst win record of any Spireites manager. On 29 September 2017, club legend Jack Lester was appointed the club’s new manager, bringing with him Nicky Eaden as his assistant and former caretaker manager Tommy Wright as a first team coach. However he was unable to prevent the club being relegated out of the English Football League at the end of the 2017–18 season.

Experienced keeper who joined the Spireites this summer after leaving Macclesfield Town. He has played for a number of clubs including Bournemouth.

Comfortable playing as a left back or central defender, Laurence Maguire made his way through the ranks of the Spireites after joining the club as a 14–year-old.

Maguire signed his first professional contract in June 2015, a year later he made his first team debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Checkatrade Trophy. He scored his first senior goal in December as the Spireites defeated Rochdale 2-0 in the Checkatrade Trophy second round.

In February, Maguire spent a month on loan at AFC Fylde in the National League North before returning to the Spireites starting XI for the remaining six matches of the 2016/17 campaign. Laurence is the brother of fellow professionals Joe and Harry Maguire of Boston United and Leicester City respectively.

Rowley’s emergence in the Spireites first team was one of the few highlights of an otherwise disappointing 2016/17 campaign..

Following a series of impressive displays for both the reserve and youth teams, Rowley made his first team debut in a 1-3 home defeat to Rochdale, he was later voted the sponsors man of the match.

He caught the eye once again in the 0-0 draw away at Bolton Wanderers before signing his first professional contract on April 7. The following day he scored the only goal of the game as the Spireites beat Port Vale 1-0 at the Proact.

Born in Sheffield, Rowley has been with the club since the age of 15, and is the reigning Academy Player of the Year.

Mandeville made his first team debut for Doncaster Rovers on 3 April 2015, coming on as a second-half substitute for Jonson Clarke-Harris in a home League One match against Bradford City at the Keepmoat Stadium.

On 31 January 2018, he joined League Two club Colchester United on loan until the end of the 2017–18 season. He made his Colchester debut from the bench on 10 February in their 1–1 draw at Carlisle United.

He was released by Doncaster at the end of the 2018–19 season.

On 5 June 2019, Mandeville signed a two-year contract with Chesterfield.

He played for Nottingham Forest briefly, under the management of Brian Clough, and then joined Sheffield Wednesday, for whom he scored the winning goal in the 1991 Football League Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. Near the end of his time with the club, he played for Birmingham City and Bolton Wanderers on loan before joining the latter permanently. Sheridan made 199 league appearances for Wednesday and scored 25 goals. He won the Football League with Bolton in 1997.

Sheridan played for Doncaster Rovers after leaving Bolton and then joined Oldham Athletic, where he spent the last six years of his playing career, scoring 14 league goals in 144 appearances. He played international football for the Republic of Ireland, for whom he won 34 caps and scored five goals over a seven-year period. Having been included in the Republic’s squad for UEFA Euro 1988, Sheridan went on to play one game at the 1990 FIFA World Cup and four in the 1994 tournament.

He became Oldham’s manager in 2006, having served as caretaker twice during his time as an Oldham player. Sheridan left the club in 2009, having spent more than ten years there as a player, coach and manager. He joined Chesterfield later that year, where he achieved success in league and cup competition. Sheridan resigned after three years in charge and became Plymouth Argyle’s manager at the beginning of 2013. His brother, Darren, also played for several clubs in the Football League.

OLDHAM ATHLETIC

As Following the departure of Iain Dowie to Crystal Palace in late 2003, Sheridan took over the coaching of the Oldham first team, along with fellow-veteran David Eyres, before they were both replaced by Brian Talbot. On 1 June 2006, Talbot’s successor, Ronnie Moore, was himself sacked and Sheridan stepped in to fill in the manager’s position on a permanent basis.

On 7 December 2006, Sheridan was named Football League One Manager of the Month. He guided Oldham to sixth place in League One in 2006–07, and their promotion challenge was ended in the play-off semi-finals by eventual winners Blackpool.

CHESTERFIELD

On 9 June 2009, Sheridan was named as manager of Chesterfield in League Two. Signing a three-year contract with the club, he brought assistant Tommy Wright and goalkeeper Mark Crossley along with him.

Sheridan’s second season with the club saw him bringing in his own players, and on 22 April 2011 a draw between Torquay United and Wycombe Wanderers meant Chesterfield were promoted without even kicking a ball in League Two. On 7 May 2011, Chesterfield were confirmed as champions of League Two after a 3–1 victory over play-off contenders Gillingham in their last match of the season. Sheridan’s side won the Football League Trophy the following season but the club’s league campaign ended in relegation back to League Two.

On 28 August 2012, it was announced that Sheridan had been relieved of his duties after the team gained two points from the opening three league games of the 2012–13 season. After five weeks on gardening leave, a club statement on 3 October announced that Sheridan had resigned with effect from 18 September 2012.

PLYMOUTH ARGYLE

Sheridan was appointed manager of Plymouth Argyle on 6 January 2013.

“There have been one or two other jobs while I’ve been out of work that I didn’t go for. But as soon as Plymouth came up, a lot of people told me how good it is,” said Sheridan, who signed a contract until the end of the 2012–13 season. “I have been in Yorkshire for the majority of my career and it’s a change for me. It’s a big upheaval for me to come to Plymouth, but I’m really excited.”He was named Football League Two Manager of the Month for March after Argyle won four and drew one of their six matches. By the end of the season, the club had won eight and drawn four of Sheridan’s 19 games in charge and avoided relegation from the Football League. Sheridan signed a new three-year contract with the club in May. “Obviously, now the hard work starts. I keep saying it – I’m ready to get this club pushed up the league and that’s what I am going to try to do,” he said.

Sheridan improved the fortunes of Plymouth Argyle in 2013/14, leading the club to a 10th-placed finish in League 2,the first time the club has finished higher than 21st in league competition since 2007/08. However, the season ended on a negative note, as following a 2-1 victory over Sheridan’s former club Chesterfield which put the Pilgrims into the play off positions, the team then self capitulated and only won one of the final nine games. This led to Sheridan deciding against renewing the contracts of seven professionals, including former player of the year Maxime Blanchard and Plymouth-born midfielder Luke Young, with promotion the target for 2014-15.

Sheridan’s Plymouth finished in 7th place in 2014/15, securing a place in the League 2 play off’s following a 2-0 win at Shrewsbury Town on the final day of the regular season. However they were defeated by 4th placed Wycombe Wanderers over the 2-legged semi final, with the Pilgrims succumbing to a 5-3 defeat on aggregate.

On 28 May 2015 Plymouth announced that Sheridan had left the club by mutual consent after expressing a desire to return to the north of England for family reasons.

Chesterfield won the Fourth Division championship with a club record 91 points in 1984-85. The Spireites won their opening four games, then beat Hereford United 3-1 in a top of the table clash at Saltergate and secured pole position with a 5-1 demolition of Exeter. Newcomers Brian Ferguson and Mick Henderson helped Chesterfield to overcome a lean spell and they returned to the top after wins at rivals Hereford and Darlington in late March, celebrating promotion with a 1-0 victory at Stockport. Captain Steve Baines and Les Hunter were ever-present as John Duncan’s side clinched the title with a 0-0 draw at Peterborough.

Chesterfield won the League Two title again in 2013-14. Paul Cook’s side raced to the top of the table after dropping just two points in an eight match unbeaten start. They failed to win any of their next seven games but had two further spells in pole position before returning to the top and clinching promotion with a 2-0 win at Burton Albion in their penultimate match. Tommy Lee was ever-present as the Spireites secured the title with a 2-1 win at home to Fleetwood on the final day. They also reached the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final, beating Mansfield, Rochdale, Oldham and Fleetwood before losing 3-1 to Peterborough at Wembley.

Giantkillers Chesterfield were very unlucky not to reach the FA Cup final in 1996-97. The Spireites won five of their opening seven Second Division games and remained in contention for the play-offs but the epic FA Cup run overshadowed League performances. Kevin Davies starred as John Duncan’s side defeated Bury 1-0, Scarborough 2-0, Bristol City 2-0, Bolton Wanderers 3-2, Nottingham Forest 1-0 and Wrexham 1-0 before gaining a thrilling 3-3 draw against Middlesbrough in the semi-finals. Chesterfield had a goal disallowed in that match at Old Trafford and Middlesbrough triumphed 3-0 in the replay at Hillsborough.

John Sheridan managed Chesterfield to the League Two title in 2010-11. They went top of the table after a 2-1 victory at Wycombe in mid-October and lost just one of their opening 15 games, including a 5-5 draw with Crewe Alexandra and 5-2 win over Accrington Stanley. The Spireites remained in pole position for the rest of the season and Jack Lester grabbed hat-tricks as they hammered Stockport 4-1 in January and Rotherham 5-0 in March. Leading scorer Craig Davies and Jack Lester netted 40 goals between them as Chesterfield won promotion with four matches remaining, finishing five points ahead of runners-up Bury.

As we await the start of our season, we have been giving our old bones a bit of a rest although we continue our Bees in the Community volunteering and spreading the good name of Barnet FC.

We have recently been supporting our good friend and councillor, Lisa Rutter, who runs the Dementia Club UK in Barnet by attending Finchley Memorial Hospital. We helped make tea, sing songs and call out quizzes, giving the volunteer helpers support at one of their sessions. We also took along our trophies to help stimulate memories and provide happy photos which led to many talking about their past experiences playing football which proved to be a very rewarding afternoon.

On the pitch, we recently had a visit from Dutch walking football team SV Juliana 31 from Malden. They spent a wonderful two days with us, with the boss Darren Currie handing out match-day medals too. Such was the success of the visit, we have been invited to the Netherlands next year to take part in a European tournament. The Bees in Europe! Who would have thought it?

If you want to join us for walking football, you can simply turn up at the Hive at either of our weekly sessions listed below:

THURSDAY (7PM-8PM) OR FRIDAY (2PM-3PM) | COST PER SESSION: £3

WELCOME TO ANOTHER INTRIGUING MATCH WITHIN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE.

This weekend, The National League celebrates it’s 40th anniversary, since the first fixtures took place in the then-called Alliance Premier League.

An allocation of 20 Clubs made up the fifth tier, with Altrincham claiming the title in the inaugural season.

The Noel Kelly trophy- named after the former Nuneaton Borough Chairman- remained at Moss Lane at the end of the first two campaigns.

The pyramid shaped trophy represented a transition to the structure of Non-League football, which has been integral in shaping the game in this country.

With automatic promotion introduced from 1987, even the smallest Clubs could dream of a meteoric rise into the Football League and beyond.

Football power-brokers Jim Thompson and Noel White, who sadly passed away recently, were just two of a number of

CLU

BED

ITION

key people who influenced this ground-breaking change- and many others, like the influential Bill King, Peter Hunter and current President Brian Lee, have tirelessly steered the League through its many adventures over the past four decades.

The addition of the play-offs in 2003, then the North and South divisions a year later, has added a new dimension to the competition and created more wonderful memories.

Not only has the league had three titles, with the Football Conference in use for nearly 30 years, there has also been a total of six title sponsors. All of which have helped create an identity for the competition, as we know it today.

From a football perspective, there has been a huge number of significant moments throughout The National League’s history.

Wealdstone became the first Club to win the “Non-League double” of league title and FA Trophy success back in 1985. Colchester United matched this achievement in 1992, then Martin O’Neill’s Wycombe Wanderers the following season.

Many managers and players have gone onto have hugely successful careers in the game. Similar to O’Neill, the likes of Neil Warnock, Jamie Vardy and Joe Hart have made their mark at the top level.

And who can forget the more recent FA Cup runs of Lincoln City and Sutton United just over two years ago? Managers Danny Cowley and Paul Doswell performed heroics with their respective sides, showcasing their efforts in front of global audiences.

Our current commercial partnerships with Vanarama, LV Bet and BT Sport are flourishing, and the estimated money generated by the season-long competition is now at over £80 million.

From small acorns, The National League has become a well-established part of English football- and its profile is growing season-by-season. Extensive live

matchday TV coverage on BT Sport and a greater awareness of our three divisions across the breadth of both traditional and modern media continues to grow.

Last season, over two million spectators attended our matches. It’s incredibly encouraging to see so many people coming through the turnstiles at our Football Clubs, the heartbeats of their communities. The figure is substantially larger than a decade ago.

Most importantly our competition remains friendly, welcoming and open to all. It is a National League but with wonderful Local Values.

Happy Birthday! And here’s to the next forty years.

From: Carla Devine

Notts County has always been one of my favourite away days so whilst it was sad to see them relegated last season, I was excited to visit Meadow Lane again. Due to it being a late kick off for TV I was able to have a nice lie in and lunch at home before leaving Leeds just before 2:30pm. We took the M1 (not that I would know since I slept the whole way) and arrived in Nottingham around 4:45pm. We parked in our usual place just next to ground and were inside about half an hour before kick off. A fair number of Bees had travelled to the lovely big ground and the atmosphere was building as the teams came out for kick off.

Just 9 minutes into the game, Notts County took the lead as Boldewijin took a beautiful shot from the edge of the box that went straight into the top corner. The game settled down but due to the strong wind and Notts being a physical team it was clear we weren’t going to be watching the most beautiful game ever. Our first chance came on 16 minutes when Jack Taylor’s free kick went just wide. On 24 minutes, Mason Clark was brought down in the box with us fans hoping for a penalty but nothing was given. However, on 29 minutes our luck changed when Callum Reynolds got his head on the end of a corner to level the scores going in to half time. You can tell summer is on its way out as, for the first time this season, I was back with my beloved and hot chocolate and chocolate half time combo. We had a few chances at the start of the second half but Notts County did too, with impressive saves by Loach to stop them scoring. We then found our mojo and nearly went ahead with Jack Taylor’s shot saved and Cheye Alexander’s just wide. Our efforts were rewarded on 75 minutes when Simeon Akinola received a lovely pass from Jack Taylor and chipped it over the keeper to put us ahead. It was a beautiful goal and us fans were buzzing! No more goals came in the remaining 15 minutes but we were the team on top looking positive going forward.

Currie and the team came over to applaud the 155 Barnet fans who were in great voice throughout. Afterwards, me and my parents battled through the wind to make it back to car and set off back up north stopping for food along the way. Overall, we deserved the win and it was a great 3 points to pick up. To top it all off, I made it back to Leeds in time to go out and celebrate the win!

League 2 side Morecambe have signed defender George Tanner on a season long loan from Premier League Manchester United. The 19 year has heavily featured for the Red Devils under 18 and under 23 squads in the past few years, but has yet to make a first team appearance. “George comes highly rated and will be a good addition to our defensive ranks” said Shrimps manager Jim Bentley. “We are looking forward to working with him over the coming months”. The Lancashire side finished 18th in the fourth tier last season, and find themselves in 21st position after two games.

This weekend marks the 40th anniversary of the start of the Alliance Premier League, what would later be renamed the Conference, then the National League. The first round of fixtures were played on Saturday 18th August 1979. The league was formed of 20 teams taken from the two top non league divisions at the time, the Northern League and the Southern league, with Barnet being one of the founding clubs. Out of the 20 founding clubs, only 4 are competing in the division this season, Barrow, Yeovil Town, Ebbsfleet United (then known as Gravesend and Northfleet), as well as the Bees. Barnet have been the most successful club, with three title wins (joint record with Macclesfield Town) and several second placed finishes.

Last Wednesday saw Macclesfield Town have their winding up petition adjourned until next month. The clubs’ appearance in the High Court on Wednesday was their fourth in as many months, all involving their recent financial issues.

The case involving the club not paying some of their former players has now been dismissed, however HMRC have now taken the case over. Before its last adjournment back in July, a former Silkmen player had been made the lead petitioner against the League Two club, but now HMRC have

taken charge. After this weeks adjournment, the newly appointed date is Wednesday, 11th September.

Ivory Coast international Wilfried Bony has said that he hopes that his spell at League 2 club Newport County will help to prepare him physically for a possible move to a club higher up the pyramid or abroad, with report of interest from several clubs in Italy and Turkey.

The 56 cap international, who is 30 years old, has been training with County in order to keep up his fitness levels ahead of a move. “I need to train with a team to be fit before I find a new team” Bony said “My agent is talking with some clubs in Italy and Turkey also. We are waiting for the best offer and then after discussing it, we will try to go there and sign. I hope to find a club as soon as possible”. He has been without a club since May, when he was released by the Exiles’ south Wales rivals Swansea City, where he had spent just short of 100 times over two spells, having spent part of last season at Qatari side Al-Arabi. His former

clubs also include Sparta Prague, Vitesse Arnhem, Manchester City and Stoke City.

Former Manchester United legend Gary Neville has said that he now

has no desire to return to coaching. He was a coach and an assistant manager for the England national team between 2012 and 2016, and was also the manager of Spanish side Valencia during the 2015/16 season, but he was sacked after just four months, winning just 10 out of his 28 games in charge, leaving them in 14th place in the league, six points off of safety and out of all their cups. Having played over 600 times for the Red Devils, as well as making 85 England appearances, the 44 year old now owns part of League 2 sideSalford City, does punditry work for live TV games, and also runs businesses in hospitality and property. “There is not one single part of me that wakes up and thinks ‘I want to be on the training field’”, he said. “I had my foray into management in Valencia and it was probably one of the best learning curves I have ever had. It was a clip around the ear, sometimes you need one in life”. His brother, Phil Neville, is currently the manager of the England women’s national team.

With their first four league and cup games of the season having been postponed due to their ongoing financial and legal difficulties, Bury’s season ticket holders have been offered free entry to games at their local non league side Curzon Ashton.

“Our Saturdays wouldn’t be the same without football, and neither should yours” Curzon Ashton said in a statement. “We send all of our best wishes to all those involved at Bury FC and hope that this situation to sorted as quickly as possible and you can see your own side get their season under way”. In order for the Shakers to fulfil their fixtures, the EFL need to be satisfied that the club can pay off its’ outstanding creditors and also have sufficient funding for the rest of the coming season, which, as of time of writing, as not occurred yet.

Hull City have publicly apologised to a “shocked” fan who posted a long post on his Twitter account slamming the club, after an “undercover security guard” reportedly told him to stop texting on his phone or else he faces ejection from the ground. 28 year old Daniel Mawer told his online followers that he was approached at half time during the Tigers 2-1 home Championship win against Reading last weekend, and was told to stop texting his friend who was not at the game updates on what was going on as part of “spot checks into unauthorised data gathering” matches. The Yorkshire club said that they are now liaising with Mawer, the club’s own security company Superstadium Management as well as Comsec, another company hired by Football Data Co to monitor and regulate the collection and distribution of official match data and statistics. “The Comsec scout spotting programme is managed by Football Data Co in collaboration with the league and its clubs,” said an EFL statement. “Access is provided at matches for Comsec representatives to operate and identify potential infringements.

Salisbury FC have signed Arsenal academy player Tom Smith on a temporary deal. The club, who now play in the BetVictor Southern League Premier Division South, the seventh tier of English football, have signed the youngster on a month

long work experience deal. The Whites, who were formed in 2015 as a phoenix club to the previous Salisbury City, have had an injury crisis to their goalkeepers in recent weeks, so have signed Smith on a short deal to provide cover. The side currently sit in 10th place in the league table, having won one and lost one of their opening two games.

Another young player moving into non league from higher up the pyramid is Marcin Brzozowski, who joins National League side Yeovil Town.

The 20 year old goalkeeper signs for the Somerset side from QPR, and has spent the past two seasons out on loan at Harlow Town and Ashford Town respectively, as well as featuring for the R’s under 23 team. The Polish ‘keeper has been with the Loftus Road side since he was 11 years old, and signed a new, one year contract with them over the summer, before being snapped up on a one month loan by Darren Sarll, where he is expected to be competing for a starting place in the squad.

MASCOTSOur home fixture versus Yeovil Town FC saw us welcome both Esme and Jobe Stockley, the two children of a former Bee, Sam Stockley.

Both Esme and Jobe got to meet the manager and players pre-match where they had plenty of pictures and autographs to go with honour of leading out the Bees for kick-off in our 1-0 victory.

We hope they all had a great day at The Hive and we look forward to seeing them again soon.

Different times and a totally different atmosphere to when Chesterfield visited the Hive in May 2018. They were already down, and despite a convincing victory, events elsewhere conspired to send Barnet down with them. Since then the Spirites experienced the rollercoaster sensation of having Martin Allen in charge, and this their visit to the Hive in just over two years brings a different ambience again with both sides contemplating a return to the Football League.

Last season Mr Joe Gibney completed the road to the FA Cup Final. After firstly watching Barkingside in a Qualifying Round, and blessed with three trips to Swansea. So he saw Manchester City on three occasions, appropriately as they completed the domestic treble with victory over Watford .This season Mr G hopes to have a new road to the arch, the climax being the FA Trophy, so he could get to see the Bees enroute.

Since we moved to the Hive I have written essays on practically all of our competitive opponents. Pride of place in my reading material has always included Simon lnglis’seminal Football Grounds of Britain. He starts his account 1998 update by proclaiming Chesterfield as the League’s fourth oldest club. Notts County would definitely predate them, but we are not told the other two sides.

Permanent move to Saltergate was apparently achieved in 1887. One of my memories involved the substitute introduction of Roger “Harry “ Willis which was warmly greeted by both sets of fans. Another archive classic which I unearthed was the Football Ground Map of England Wales which dates from the Seventies when Hereford had just been elected. The London section would have changed in subsequent years, with both Dagenham and Redbridge and ourselves coming and going like the Karma Chameleon, but happily Leyton Orient return.

Phil Neville’s positive attitude helped them on their way. I was privileged I, in 2012, to be at the Olympic Final, so the United States remain the benchmark, but the European nations are catching up. On a cold winter’s day helped organise a trip to Southport where Barnet Ladies took on Everton in the FA Cup. It could happen again, and with the improved facilities here in the Hive hopefully will.

For a while the club was known as Chesterfield Muncipal. The pioneering attempt at football on the rates ended in 1921 when the club were founder members of Third Division North. The ground had the dubious distinction of being the last Football League venue to install floodlights.

Our first journey to the ground was a 2-1 defeat in November 1991 when Mark Carter scored the Bees goal.

More recently we triumphed against the odds in 2012 up in Derbyshire with a Mark Byrne penalty.

The B2 Net Arena as I believe it was previously branded, we have a small part in the history of Chesterfield by being the first competitive opponents nine years ago. Jack Lester and Dwayne Mattis scored the goals, in a 2-1 victory for the Spireites. I remember the sense of occasion and the enormous programme which practically filled my coffee table on arriving home. Saltergate has its’ charm, but this is one of the better venues, for its’ comparatively central location and proximity to a number of decent hostelries.

As well as football I also visited Chesterfield in the nineties to see Glamorgan play Derbyshire. Two summers ago they celebrated their first home victory since 2014, and that was against Middlesex. For a few years all their games were played at Derby, the Racecourse Ground, as it was previously known. Their only Championship was secured in 1936, which is an even longer wait for the top prize than Tottenham. Unfortunately the counties which do not stage Test or international cricket, often struggle- witness Leicestershire and Northants in recent years. I liked Chesterfield, a pretty ground in the middle of a park, and hope that they have turned the corner. As well as being a proud achiever of the 92 club unofficial badge, I have visited well over sixty county grounds if you include the various homes of Hertfordshire, including lovely Stevenage and Pontarddulais, birthplace of my University chum Awena Wells.
