Good Evening and welcome to The Hive London for our first home game of the season. I would like to extend that welcome to Brad Quinton, his players, officials and the supporters of Braintree Town.

S T I L L W R I T E S

I don’t believe in luck, I’m not that sort of person

John

You always look at your fixtures when they come out but no matter who you play, every game at the start of the season is a tough one because it’s unknown. What has gone on last year can sometimes have no relevance, so whoever we were playing we were prepared for a tough game.

The fact it was Aldershot, who have been in the playoffs for the last couple of seasons, adds to that difficulty. It was two teams that have made a lot of changes from last season. For us, I thought we played well first half and I thought we were exceptional in the second half. The longer the game went on, the stronger we got and the more we grew into it. We hit the woodwork three times, we had three or four off the line. The performance was very good. They had their share of the ball, but we defended very well and the longer the game went, the more I thought that we looked like scoring.

I don’t believe in luck, I’m not that sort of person, I think that can become an excuse but I do believe that if you work hard and continue doing the right things, you do get results and that’s how I see this.

We want to turn this place into a difficult stadium to come to. People say to me that

teams will come here, see us as a side that’s just dropped out of the league and they’ll raise their game, and that’s fine - they will. But there are lots of former EFL clubs in this league now and if we’re mentally and physically prepared for it, then I don’t see it becoming an issue.

In the first six or eight games, it will take everyone a while to get into their stride. I’ve seen both sides - started seasons on fire and started seasons not how I would’ve liked. I’ve been slow away and gone on to win the league by as many points as you like. I know the ingredients I look for, I know what’s required. At the moment, I feel like we have the ingredients. Will that carry us through a whole season, we’ll have to wait and see.

Today, I expect a tough game against Braintree. Teams that get promotion, regardless of if they change players, those

players come into a club that’s on a little bit of a high. I don’t really expect the early games to be anything

other than having to work your socks off, establishing yourselves in a position in the league that you can grow on. You have to make sure you’re focused on your jobs, focused on your discipline and you hope that your best players turn up.

It’s been a very frustrating past few weeks for myself, after getting through all the hard work in pre-season and playing a few games, I picked up a little back injury against Ipswich.

Last Saturday was just one of those games. I just don’t know how we didn’t win! When you look at the chances, we’ve hit the bar twice, the post and a few cleared off the line. They had a few last-ditch blocks and the goalkeeper was man of the match. On another day, it could’ve been five or six. But, opening day of the season, you’d settle for a clean sheet and a point away from home. It’s a good result if we can build on that against Braintree tonight.

We want to make this place a fortress and make it hard for teams that come here. We don’t want them to enjoy coming, we want to make it a place where we pick up a lot of points this season.

A good home record obviously helps towards getting where we all want to be at the end of the season. Wins at home gives you the confidence to get

points away from here, puts you in a strong position and can take the pressure off you in certain situations.

I’m looking forward to seeing the fans tonight!

Come on you Bees!

Hello everybody, welcome back to The Hive for this evening’s game against Braintree Town!

It’s a good result if we can build on that against

Braintree tonight.

BRAINTREE TOWN RETURN TO NON–LEAGUE FOOTBALL’S TOP TIER, THEIR SEVENTH AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL OUTSIDE OF THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE, AFTER JUST ONE SEASON IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE’S SOUTH DIVISION.

After a successful 2015/16 season saw the Essex club finish third in the Vanarama Premier and secure a place in the play–off for promotion to the Football League, despite remaining as a part–time side, their successful squad broke up over the summer of 2016 and the Essex Club struggled to rebuild the following year.

A change of manager failed to turn fortunes around and the club finished 21st of 24 to be relegated – just one win adrift of safety. A period of consolidation and re–building at Cressing Road was expected under new manager Brad Quinton. But the 2011 Conference South champions exceeded all expectations last season by bouncing back at the first attempt, promoted via the end of season play–offs.

Following on from wining the Ryman League in 2006 and the Conference South in 2011, progress in the top flight was steady with final placings of twelfth (2011/12), ninth (2012/13) and sixth (2013/14) over the first three campaigns. Indeed, Braintree only missed out on an end of season promotion play–off place in 2014 by one win!

After a quieter 2014/15, season 2015/16 saw a fine campaign end with a top–three spot and a first tilt at the end of season play–offs for a place in the Football League.Having taken the lead 1–0 in the away leg at Grimsby, an extra time 2–0 defeat in the return leg at Cressing Road saw Braintree eliminated by the eventual Promotion Final winners and miss out a Promotion Final place at Wembley.Reaching non–League football’s top flight saw the pinnacle of a long journey from local football in East Anglia. Since the 1991 the Club have progressed via the Eastern Counties League, through the ranks of both the Southern and Isthmian Leagues to secure a National League top flight place.

ORIGINS OF THE CLUB

The origins of the current club are from 1898 as Manor Works, the works team of the Crittall Window Company. The Club joined the North Essex League, winning the title in 1905/06, 1910/11 and 1911/12. In 1911 they also joined Division 2A of the Essex & Suffolk Border League, remaining in the league until 1928.In 1921 the Club switched its name to Crittall Athletic to be more closely identified with their parent company. After winning Division 2A West twice, they were promoted to the Senior Division of the Border League in 1925. In 1928 they joined the Spartan League and, in 1935, were founder members of the Eastern Counties League.

They won the league in its second season, but then left to join the newly–established Essex County League. The new league folded after a single season (in which Crittall were runners–up) and the Club returned to the Eastern Counties League.

After the Second World War the Club joined the Eastern Division of the London League. After finishing second in their first season, they were promoted to the Premier Division. They won the League Cup twice before returning to the Eastern Counties League in 1952.

In 1954 the Club had a brief flirtation with professionalism, but financial problems forced them to revert to amateur status and drop back down into the Border League at the end of the 1954/55 season.

In 1959/60 they won the League and League Cup double. They switched to the Greater London League in 1964, and then to the Metropolitan League in 1966. They were renamed Braintree & Crittall Athletic in 1968 and in 1970 returned to the Eastern Counties League again.

In 1981 all links with Crittall were severed and the Club was renamed Braintree F.C., before adopting their current name in 1982. They won their second Eastern Counties League title in 1983/84 and retained it the following season. In 1986/87 they won the Essex Senior Trophy and the following season they won the League Cup.

PROGRESS UP THE PYRAMID

In 1991 the Club stepped up to the Southern Division of the Southern League. In 1996 the Club were traveling all over the south of the country to fulfill their fixtures asked the FA to switch leagues in order to reduce their traveling.

After initially being refused, they were allowed to switch to Division Three of the Isthmian League, although it was an effective drop of two divisions. They were promoted as runners–up in their first season, and repeated the feat the following season! After three seasons in Division One, they were promoted to the Premier Division with a third–place finish in 2000/01.

Braintree reached the end of season promotion play–offs in the Isthmian League in 2005, but were beaten by Eastleigh in the semi–finals. A year later, 2006, they made no mistake winning the Isthmian League Premier Division championship, with an impressive 94 points, while conceding just 32 goals.

The following season 2006/07 saw them reach the Conference South play–off final, only to be beaten by Salisbury City at Stevenage. Twelve months later, 2007/08 season saw Braintree again reach the play–offs, but face defeat at Eastbourne Borough in the semi–finals.

A quieter season followed, but 2009/10 saw Braintree just miss out on a third play–off place on the last day of the season, but 2010/11 saw Braintree finally secure promotion, winning the Conference South title by seven clear points.Braintree Town started their 2010/11 championship–winning season with seven league matches unbeaten. They then moved to the top of the Blue Square Bet South table with four victories in five league matches in the autumn and moved back to the top of the table following the 4–4 draw at Staines Town in December. The cold weather disrupted progress over Christmas, but Braintree won all six matches in January to move clear at the top, while wins in February saw that lead extended to seven points. Injuries in March saw Braintree losetwo of their six games, but an unbeaten run in April saw them secure the title at Easter and they were crowned champions with two games to spare.

New manager Chris Symes guided Braintree Town to the Eastern

Counties League title in 1983-84. The title race became a two-team affair, with Braintree having games in hand and a better goal difference

than leaders Wisbech Town during the closing weeks. A last minute goal gave Braintree a crucial 4-3 win at Wisbech

at the end of April but that was the last match they won and the title was

decided on goal difference. Chris Guy, Ivan Gooday, John Bibby and Gus Jennings scored 87 goals between

them as Braintree netted 125 in the Eastern Counties League, hitting

seven past Bury Town, Newmarket and Thetford and six past Stowmarket and

Tiptree.

ELSEWHERE IN 1983Liverpool also won the European

Cup, to complete a unique treble of trophies. Keith Burkinshaw resigned

after seven years as Tottenham Hotspur manager, and went out on a

high after his side won the UEFA Cup.

ELSEWHERE IN 1984-85Norwich City became the first club to win a major trophy in a relegation

season as they lifted the League Cup after beating Sunderland, who

went down with them to the Second Division. This occurrence would not be repeated for some 26 years when Birmingham City suffered the same fate; also relegated after lifting the League Cup earlier in the season.

Class

ic Braintree Town retained the Eastern Counties League title in 1984-85.

Chris Symes’ side finished five points ahead of runners-up Sudbury Town

but didn’t clinch the title until the last week of the season after widespread

postponements during the winter months led to many clubs playing a third of their Eastern Counties

League games in the final six weeks. Chris Guy was leading scorer with

30 goals as Braintree netted 100 in the Eastern Counties League, losing just six matches. The Iron won 5-2 at Stowmarket and slammed four goals

past seven other clubs. They also reached the Eastern Counties League Cup semi-finals but were defeated 2-1

by Histon.

ELSEWHERE IN 1987-88Wimbledon caused one of the biggest footballing upsets of the 20th century by defeating champions Liverpool 1–0 in the FA Cup final. Wimbledon had

only been league members for 11 years and First Division members for two

years, while Liverpool had just wrapped up their 17th league championship.

ELSEWHERE IN 1990-91The club finally secured long awaited

promotion to the Football League in 1990/91. Under the stewardship of Barry Fry, the Bees would pip

Colchester United to the title by just two points, scoring 103 goals en route, Gary Bull scoring 30 of those finishing

as the divisions top scorer.

ELSEWHERE IN 1996-97Chesterfield, playing in the third tier of English football, reached the FA Cup semi-final. On the way to the semi-final they beat Nottingham Forest 1–0 and Bolton Wanderers 3–2, with a hat trick from a young

Kevin Davies. In the semis they met Middlesbrough at Old Trafford and

took them all the way to replay before falling 3-0.

Gary Hollocks and Chris Guy scored 45 goals between them as Braintree

Town went close to achieving the Eastern Counties League and Cup

‘double’ in 1987-88. The Iron defeated Watton United, Chatteris Town

and Sudbury Town en route to the Eastern Counties League Cup final, beating Haverhill Rovers 1-0 after

extra-time to lift the trophy for the first time in their history. They were the highest scorers in the Eastern Counties League with 96 goals but finished runners-up, three points

behind champions March Town United who clinched the title with a 5-0 win at Chatteris in May. The Iron failed to gain promotion to the Southern

League on ground grading.

Gary Hollocks and Kevin Newbury scored 16 goals apiece as Braintree

Town were Eastern Counties League runners-up for the fourth time in five

seasons in 1990-91. The Iron won just five of their opening 14 games but soared up the table with only

one defeat in their last 26 matches, finishing six points behind champions

Wisbech Town. Kevin Newbury netted five times as Braintree triumphed 7-2 at Thetford Town in late April. They

were accepted into the Southern League at the end of the season. The

FA Cup second qualifying round defeat at home to Barnet was watched

by 1,411 and appeared in the BBC’s Match of the Day ‘Road to Wembley’

feature.

Wade Falana and Gary Bennett netted 56 goals between them as

Braintree Town won promotion and were Isthmian League Cup finalists in 1996-97. Despite scoring the most

goals, 99, in the Isthmian League Third Division and suffering fewest defeats,

Braintree finished runners-up, one point behind champions Wealdstone.

The Iron gained a record 11-1 victory at Clapton and hammered East Thurrock 7-1, also netting six goals at home to Clapton, Flackwell Heath, Hertford

Town, Lewes and Wingate & Finchley. They beat Tring, Aylesbury United, Carshalton, Billericay, Bedford and

Sutton in the Cup before losing 1-0 to Boreham Wood in the final.

1997-98 2000-01 2005-06Gary Bennett scored a club record 57 goals as Braintree Town won promotion for the second consecutive year in 1997-98. The Isthmian League Second Division title race went to the wire and Braintree’s shock 1-0 defeat at home to bottom club Cheshunt enabled Canvey Island to pip them on goal difference after they won at relegated Tilbury. Both clubs finished on 98 points, 15 ahead of third-placed Wealdstone. The Iron were top scorers with 117 goals but had an inferior defensive record. Braintree’s only other defeat was 1-0 at home to Wealdstone and they were the only team not to lose an away match. Tony Hall’s side swept to a 7-0 win at home to Met Police.

Robbie Reinelt was leading marksman with 37 goals as Braintree Town won promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division in 2000-01. The Iron were top scorers with 112 goals but finished third in the Isthmian League First Division behind Boreham Wood and Bedford Town. Ben Embery’s side made an inconsistent start but then scored 11 goals without reply in their two mid-season matches against Bromley before losing four out of five games in February. They recovered to lose just three of their last 17 games, annihilating Romford 10-0 at Cressing Road and clinching promotion in third place with a 3-0 victory at Barton Rovers on the final day.

Braintree Town won the Isthmian League Premier Division title in 2005-06. The Iron lost two of their opening five games but completed an early double over Heybridge Swifts. George Borg’s side had the best defensive record, remaining unbeaten at home and losing just four away games. The 2-1 win at home to Chelmsford on Boxing Day heralded an unbeaten 23 match finish to the season. Alex Revell, Eugene Ofori and Carl Griffiths netted 43 Isthmian League goals between them. Braintree gained 94 points, finishing seven above runners-up Heybridge. They reached the FA Cup first round for the first time in their history but lost 4-1 at Shrewsbury.

ELSEWHERE IN 1997-98Arsenal overhauled Manchester

United’s lead during the final weeks of the season to win the Premiership

title. They added the FA Cup two weeks later to become only the second

English club to repeat the double.

ELSEWHERE IN 2000-01Sir Alex Ferguson became the first manager in English football to win three successive league titles after

Manchester United (only the fourth team in history to win three straight titles) topped the Premiership’s final

table for the third year in a row.

ELSEWHERE IN 2005-06Reading broke the previous points

record of 105 points, taking 106 points from 46 games, scoring 99 goals in

the procesvs to earn promotion to the Premier League for the first time in

the modern era.

2010-11 2015-16Sean Marks was top scorer as Braintree Town stormed to the Conference South title in 2010-11. Rod Stringer’s side began with a 3-0 victory at Maidenhead and were unbeaten in their opening six games before losing 2-1 at home to Dover. The Iron then won six consecutive matches without conceding a goal until their only other home defeat, 2-0 to Bromley. Following a 4-4 draw at Staines, they gained another six straight wins and remained in pole position after November. Braintree lost 2-1 at rivals Farnborough in March but eventually won the title by a seven point margin, with 89 points. They won 27 matches and lost only seven, with the best defensive record.

Braintree Town qualified for the Conference National play-offs in 2015-16. Danny Cowley’s side lost their opening two matches but then suffered only three defeats in their next 21 games, with top scorer Michael Cheek grabbing a hat-trick in their 6-3 victory at Halifax in mid-November. The Iron took League Two high-fliers Oxford United to an FA Cup first round replay before losing 3-1. They remained in play-off contention with just one defeat in 13 matches, finishing third in the Conference National after ending the season with four wins. Despite winning the play-off semi-final first-leg 1-0 at Grimsby, they lost the home leg 2-0 after extra-time.

Simeon Akinola

Simeon joined Barnet in January 2017 from our visitors, becoming one of many January arrivals under then caretaker duo Henry Newman and Rossi Eames. Initially, Akinola found life hard with the Bees, nearly joining Lincoln in the summer of 2017 had it not been for a deadline day failing to materialise. Since then, Akinola has showed the ability which made him one of the hottest prospects in the Conference. Hogging that left-hand side, his tricky feet and desire to cut inwards saw the 24-year-old bagging 4 goals last term. This eye for goal was prevalent when Akinola played for Braintree; across 104 appearances, the winger netted 19 times which made Simeon a crowd favourite at Cressing Road. Being deployed as a winger and forward by the Crowley brothers and then Alan Devonshire before his move down south, Akinola has done similar for Barnet but of late has made that left midfield position his own.

Andy Yiadom

Another winger from Braintree who directly transferred to the Bees, Andy Yiadom is amongst a cluster of ex-Bees who’ve gone on to play in the higher tiers. After half a season with Braintree, donning the club shirt on 28 occasions, Yiadom became a permanent figure in Barnet’s first-team. Martin Allen did sometimes play the now 26-year-old as a winger for away matches but largely the Ghanaian was found at right-back and excelled there. Yiadom was soon appointed club captain during Barnet’s first season back in the Football League and went on to make 169 appearances for the Bees. A glorious three-and-a-half year stint came to an end when a move to Championship level Barnsley beckoned in August 2016.

Tom Champion

Champion found himself playing in the orange Braintree strip back in 2010, honing his skills as a defensive midfielder. Appearing 19 times during the 2009/2010 season, Champion’s stay in Essex was only brief as the Englishman soon moved onto Dartford, where he played 114 games in three years. Champion meanwhile played for Barnet in two separate stints either side of his time at Braintree. After leaving Watford’s youth team, Tom moved to Barnet in the 2004/05 season featuring 7 times as Paul Fairclough’s side won the Conference for a second time. A more fruitful stint came between 2015-2017 where Champion pulled on the Black and Amber shirt 52 times, scoring only once in two years, with his solitary goal coming against Blackpool in the First Round of the FA Cup in November 2015. The 32-year-old can now be seen playing for rivals Boreham Wood.

WELCOME BACK

It went to the last day, as is normally the case and despite a comprehensive victory against Chesterfield, events elsewhere sealed our fate, which alerted the conspiracy theorists on the various social networks and vlogs. In truth, the one point which we lacked could have been gained on numerous occasions during the season, so to blame other teams when we had our fate in our own hands seems churlish. Anyway, we are a Vanarama National League team, so the task is to achieve a fourth promotion to the land of the 92. There have been numerous changes in the playing staff, and we wish all who have left all the best. John Still knows this league intimately, having won it on three occasions, so is qualified for the job at hand.

JOURNEYMAN

The Journeyman is a column which I often read in Monday’s Times, and Gregor Robertson was at the Hive on May 5th, when he wrote When Barnet’s second and third goals flew in late on at the Hive last Saturday, the type of long-range rasping strikes usually met with roars of approval, celebrations were muted. Those who read on learned of Martin Allen’s pain at losing his beloved black Labrador, Monty, a dog who has probably become familiar to followers of Chesterfield also in recent months.

NON LEAGUE NEWS

“There is always someone worse off than you” was a motto of my grandmother, and despite our disappointing season, consider the following two sides. Thurrock are no more, our former boss Mark Stimson will be out of work. Chairman Tommy South put the team up for sale but

was unsuccessful in finding a bidder, so this season will be their last. In happier times I visited the club not long after they were rechristened from their original name of Purfleet. They put up a decent show in front of the BBC cameras, but ultimately lost in the FA Cup to Oldham. To add to the Barnet connections, the strike force was Tresor Kandol and Cliff Akurang. One of the problems for the club must have been the accessibility difficulties for those who didn’t drive.

Hmm, I wrote this for the Wycombe game and the April game at Staines Town proved to be their last competitive fixture. Whether there will ever be another game of football at Ship Lane, or whether there is any chance of a revival, I’m sure our opponents tonight from Braintree know more than me. Seems terribly sad that a proud club slipped away. On a more positive note, following years in the planning, Hayes and Yeading have a new home.

AND FINALLY

Apparently Forest Green are Carbon Neutral. I have no idea what that means but I was watching Sky Sports News for the triumphant photos of Geraint Thomas in the Tour de France. Sadly, I will not make the midweek game at Harrogate, one of twelve teams to visit the Hive for the very first time this season, but expect essays on our new opponents Bromley, Fylde, Solihull, Maidstone, Salford and Barrow amongst others and good luck to the Bees.

The Bees started brightly, Byron Harrison heading over Dan Sparkes’ cross and Medy Elito curling a shot just wide in the fourth minute.

Jacob Berkeley-Agyepong driving run at the Barnet defence caused issues but his shot from the edge of the box went narrowly wide.

John Still’s Bees would hit the crossbar through Sparkes’ free kick on the half-hour mark, it hit the line before rebounding out to Charlee Adams but he blazed the rebound over when he was put under pressure by James Rowe.

After the break, Barnet stepped up a gear and

looked much more dangerous that the hosts. Robson had a header flicked over in front of goal. Former Bee Jake Cole was then quick to save another header from Robson.

A Harrison flick on was headed onto the crossbar by substitute Shaq Coulthirst.

Into the final minutes, a goalmouth scramble in the Aldershot box saw Robson’s, Coulthirst’s and Ephron Mason-Clark’s efforts all blocked in a crowd of bodies.

Robson would have another header cleared of the line before, in stoppage time, Harrison would have an effort saved by Cole, it fell to Coulthirst but he hit the post.

Barnet were hard done by not to come away from the EBB Stadium with more than just one point, having the ball hit the woodwork on three occasions and off the line as many times.

Hardly a steer, but let’s play safe to begin with. Two of the questions I am often asked are, “How did you get involved with the club?” and “How long have you been announcing?”.

I first saw the Bees at Underhill on a Bank Holiday Monday in 1989 as they walloped an Andy Gray-less Cheltenham 4-0. My next visit was even more colourful: their very first game in the Football League and that 7-4 score-line against Crewe. I was hooked.

A few years later, I had occasion to talk to Dave Kelly, who ran the club shop in the High Street, and mentioned that I did – and still do - a fair amount of stadium announcing for various Speedway clubs. “That’s interesting,” said Dave. “Our tannoy announcer is looking to retire to Swanage at the end of the season. Would you be interested in me putting your name forward?”After a brief meeting with Kevin Mullen, the club’s Commercial Manager, I was quickly on board and working alongside Dick Rolfe. My first game on the mic was a hideous 0-0 draw against Kidderminster on September 9th 2000 – so I’ve been involved with the club for 18 years now, and so much of it has been a real roller-coaster ride.Dick was a pleasure to work with, and as

many of you know had a marvellously droll delivery style and a sly sense of humour. I even quickly forgave him for his definite verbal no-no in a certain game against Stockport County.

He never did get to Dorset. He’s now happily retired in Great Yarmouth and

watching the Bloaters in the Eastern Counties League.

After more than 25 years of announcing at Barnet,

however, he truly remains THE Voice of Underhill.

Anyway, I guess that gets me to first base. Over the

next few weeks, I’m aiming to tell you a bit about what

can go on behind the scenes on matchday, as well as recall some of

my favourite moments at Underhill and The Hive.

After that? Maybe a tale or two that have little to do with the Bees. And maybe even a few stories that have nothing at all to do with Football, with only the most tenuous links to the club. There are plenty of directions to go in.

Be careful what you wish for, Aarron. You might just get it!

T A K I N G T H E M I C

FROM HERE TO…. WHERE?When Aarron Pullen, the Bees’ Media and Communications Officer, first asked me if I was interested in penning a regular column for the matchday programme, my

immediate question was, “What do you want me to write about?”

His answer was…. “Anything.”

WHAT’S THE BUZZJOSH PALMER

W H A T ’ S T H E B U Z Z

The summer transfer window has been open for many weeks now, countless players have left their clubs and have found new ones to call home. Obviously, there are some former Barnet players among them. There are ones that you may have heard of, for example, John Akinde’s transfer to Lincoln City, Michael Nelson and Curtis Weston to Chesterfield or Charlie Clough returning to Sutton United, but here are a few former Bees on the move that you may have missed:

Having been released by Carlisle United at the end of the season, Jamal Campbell-Ryce has signed for Stevenage, having only signed for the Cumbrians at the beginning of February. In his two and a half seasons in black and amber, the former Jamaica international made 59 appearances, which saw him score 5 goals. Former Barnet defender Jordan Brown, who played 27 times for us between 2012 and 2013, has signed for Isthmian League Division One North side Canvey Island. He signs having spent last season at local rivals Concord Rangers, having previously spent time at a host of local non-league clubs since leaving the Hive, including Boreham Wood, Dulwich Hamlet and Welling United.

Kyle De Silva, who made 3 appearances whilst on loan to us from Crystal Palace back in 2013 has joined our National League rivals, Bromley. After his release from the Eagles in 2015, he had short spells with Notts County and Dutch side FC Eindhoven. One of De Silva’s appearances was in the last game at Underhill, where he came off as a 61st-minute substitute for Luke Gambin. Former Scotland, Celtic, West Bromwich Albion and Swansea City striker Craig Beattie, who made 5 appearances for us during the 2012/13 season, has joined Scottish League Two side Elgin City, having been released by division rivals Edinburgh City at the end of the season.

26-year-old defender Tom Flanagan has signed for recently relegated Sunderland. Probably most infamously remembered by Barnet fans for giving away the penalty in the last minute during the last game at Underhill, he made 9 appearances for us whilst on loan from MK Dons. He now joins the Black Cats, who have suffered two relegations in as many years. Meanwhile, Barry Fuller has moved on from his five-season stint at AFC Wimbledon to return to his former club Gillingham. He initially joined us on loan spell from Charlton Athletic in 2006, scoring once in 15 appearances. After spells at Stevenage and with the Kent club, before playing 41 times during the 2012/13 season at Underhill.

Also on the move is Gavin Hoyte, who will now turn out for our bank holiday Monday opponents Dagenham and Redbridge. Starting out his career at Arsenal, where he made one Premier League appearance, he moved to the Daggers in 2012 after a series of loan spells. 77 appearances later, he moved to us via Gillingham, who he joined in 2014. After scoring once in 24 appearances here at the Hive, the Trinidad and Tobago international moved on to Eastleigh before his transfer to the east London club at the end of June. Also with a new club is striker Jake Hyde, who has moved to National League South side Woking, having scored on 33 occasions for us in 109 appearances over two spells.

Sam Muggleton has joined Chesterfield following his release from York City in the National League North, having previously made 68 for the Bees between 2013 and 2017. Keanu Marsh-Brown joins Newport County after not being offered a new contract by Forest Green Rovers, having been loaned out to Dover Athletic for a

short period at the end of the season. He had joined Rovers from us in 2015, on the back of a two-year spell which saw him score 15 goals in 58 appearances.

Fans favourite Luisma Villa, who returned to his native Spain after our 2015 Conference title win, has left Arenas Club de Getxo of Bilbao and has

subsequently joined SC Ponferradina, based in northwestern Spain. Olly Lee, who has 13 Bees appearances to his name, has signed for Scottish side Heart of

Midlothian. Spells at Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle preceded a transfer to Luton Town, who he helped to promotion last season. He made an early impact

for the Edinburgh side, scoring once in his first 3 appearances in the early rounds of the Scottish League Cup.

Scoring 11 in 47 games whilst playing at the Hive over the past two seasons, with a loan spell at Dundee United which produced a Scottish Challenge Cup winners medal in between, Alex Nicholls has signed for League 2 side Crewe Alexandra. Having only joined us in January, Jordan Nicholson has recently found his fifth club of 2018. Starting out the calendar year at Nuneaton on loan from Peterborough United, he signed for us at the end of the winter transfer window. After making 8 appearances, he was loaned to Brackley Town in March, before being released in May. He will play his football for National League North side Darlington. Abu Ogogo, the midfielder who scored once in his 9 Barnet games on loan from Arsenal during the 2008/09 season, has signed for promoted side Coventry City of League 1. Having been relegated at the end of last season, League 2 side MK Dons have brought in ex-Bee Ryan Watson on a one year deal.

In other football news, only several months after announcing that they would be staying at their Treyew Road stadium, which they actually sold back in 2014, have announced that fans will now face a 200 mile round trip to their “home” games, as they will be groundsharing Plainmoor with their National League South rivals Torquay United. The company that owns the ground says that the club have to move out of the stadium this summer, as they intend to build a Lidl supermarket on the land. The journey time from the Cornish city to the Devon seaside town is about two hours. The White Tigers have been planning to build a new ground in the city for several years, but it has not yet materialised.Having only recently made the decision to temporarily turn semi-professional, Gateshead have revealed that they have been taken over by a Hong Kong businessman. Dr Ranjan Varghese, director of Steel Ships Limited, purchased the club over the summer from Richard and Julie Bennett, and will now become chairman. The change from professionalism was chosen in May when the club said that it was “essential” in guaranteeing the clubs’ future when an overseas consortium, who had previously agreed to buy the club, pulled out of the deal.

Torquay United have announced their plans to build their new stadium. Despite having been relegated to the sixth tier last season via their 22nd place finish in the National League, they expect it to cost around £40 million. The plans show a new 10,000 capacity stadium, which will have space to expand in the future. The development will also contain several other features, including an academy area, a 30,000 capacity arena, a hotel, hospitality facilities and some new houses. “This is a great opportunity for us to join businesses planning investment in Torbay”, said Gulls chairman Clarke Osbourne. “Our project will bring major inward investment, long-term sport and leisure facilities - and equip the club to climb back into the English Football League and stay there”.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB), the body that makes the laws and rules of football worldwide, have added a law that allows the use of handheld electronic devices in the dugout from this season. The law was approved in March, and will, this season, be implemented in the Premier League and the Football League, as well as in FA and Scottish FA competitions. This will allow managers to now watch clips and see live data during matches. However, only certain types of device are allowed, and any official found using unauthorised equipment, or using a certified device inappropriately, may be dismissed from the technical area. This system was seen being used at the World Cup. It has also been revealed that there will be “zero tolerance” towards managers who try to show match officials highlights or replays of the match whilst it is still in play of what they thought was a bad decision, in order to influence the game.

When we announced a pre-season friendly against Maldon and Tiptree, I didn’t have the slightest clue where it was. However, I knew it was far away and would take some convincing to get to. Somehow though, my Dad was convinced and took 2 days o work to take me. Me and my parents left Leeds around 1pm giving us plenty of time to get some food (and get lost) en route. We arrived and parked at the small ground around 7pm and made our way in. Before kick-o, Village summoned us over to the side of the pitch where John Still greeted us. We had a really nice chat with him before the game as he discovered our links to Barnet and tried to figure out why on earth we had driven all the way from Leeds for a pre-season game! A while after, the teams were out and us Barnet fans took our place further up the sideline to cheer the team on.

We got o to a very good start as just 3 minutes into the game, Mason-Clark put us 1 up. We continued to show strength with shots on target from Fonguck and Jack Taylor and our eorts were rewarded on 29 minutes when Trialist 2 doubled our lead, heading the ball into the back of the net. Just 8 minutes later, Trialist 2 scored again making it 3. Just as I didn’t think there was time for any more goals, 3 minutes later Barham’s eorts were rewarded as he scored taking us into half time with a 4 goal advantage.

Half time gave us fans an opportunity to shue down nearer to the goal we would be shooting at in the second half. Soon after, the teams were back out with no changes for the Bees. 3 minutes into the second half, Wright scored for Maldon and Tiptree which I have to say was quite a nice goal! On 66 minutes, Wright scored again but this time into the wrong net giving us a 5-1 lead! On 74 minutes, Fonguck finally got a goal that he deserved, giving us a 6th. Despite a comfortable lead, we continued to push forward with full eort with especially good performances from Fonguck and Barham. On the opposition, ex-bee Shane Cojocarel was putting in his fair share of work too. On 87 minutes, Fonguck was rewarded again as he slotted the ball into the back of the net meaning the match finished 7-1.

Me and my parents had taken the opportunity of being down south (and the lovely weather) to visit Southend – a place I really like – so we drove there and stayed overnight. The next day we had a nice day at the seaside with great weather. We set o back up north around 2:30pm but due to a closure on the A1 (I should be used to it by now) it took us 7 hours to make it back home to Leeds! Although many people (including my parents) thought the whole trip was a bit of a mad idea and the journey was long, it was definitely worth it to see a good performance showing o the amount of young talent we have in our squad.
