BARTHOLOMEW MUNICIPAL POOL

Public Input Meeting 2

The Design Build Team is currently in the information gathering stage of the project.  We are gathering items such as topographic survey, soil boring, code related evaluations and now public input.  No design has been done and the following slides are intended to spark thoughts and conversation.  Although many of the slides are the same as the first meeting slides, some have been modified based on public comments received.

WHAT WE’VE HEARD……

• NEIGHBORHOOD AND URBAN DESIGN– Improve parking area

– Connections to Mueller and neighborhoods

– Respect the creek

– Innovative integration of Art in Public Places

– Water feature to engage the public 24/7

– Showcase synergy of solar power with ideas of sun – water – energy ‐movement

The next slides are a summary of comments from the November 18, 2010 public meeting.  The Design Team has tried to capture all comments.  Some may be contradictory, or may not be feasible because of scope or other goals.  Inclusion at this stage is not a guarantee the comment or will become part of the final Design Criteria Manual or the final project program.

WHAT WE’VE HEARD…

• LOOK AND FEEL– Natural, but not fake “nature”

– Entertaining for kids, but not look like a playground

– Beach entry and tension edge are appealing

Page 4: BARTHOLOMEW MUNICIPAL POOL - Austin, Texas · 2019-11-29 · BARTHOLOMEW MUNICIPAL POOL Public Input Meeting 2 The Design Build Team is currently in the information gathering stage

WHAT WE’VE HEARD…

• FEATURES– Seating areas for adults

– Provide features to appeal to different age groups and activity levels

– Shade especially for beach entry and seating

– Some dedicated lap lanes and an area where additional lanes can be added for special events

– Only provide features that can be maintained over the life of the pool

Page 5: BARTHOLOMEW MUNICIPAL POOL - Austin, Texas · 2019-11-29 · BARTHOLOMEW MUNICIPAL POOL Public Input Meeting 2 The Design Build Team is currently in the information gathering stage

WHAT WE’VE HEARD…

• OPERATIONS– Separate different ages (and appropriate features) but not too much.  Make it easy to supervise several areas at one time

– Showcase alternate energy sources

– Water  and energy conservation

– Long lived mechanical systems for both building and pool

Page 6: BARTHOLOMEW MUNICIPAL POOL - Austin, Texas · 2019-11-29 · BARTHOLOMEW MUNICIPAL POOL Public Input Meeting 2 The Design Build Team is currently in the information gathering stage

WHAT WE’VE HEARD…

• OPERATIONS – Low maintenance

– Choose features with safety and staffing considerations in mind

– Anticipate the facility will be heavily used

– Would like pool hours extended – if heating furthers that cause okay – otherwise not a priority

Site context for Bartholomew Park.  It is considered a district park and the neighborhoods to the north, east are evident in the aerial.  Also evident is it’s proximity to Mueller neighborhood and it’s reliance on 51st Street for access. The curved line on trees in the middle of the park shows the location of creek and somewhat the extent of the floodplain.

The general scope of work includes: new pool with a zero depth entry, a few lap lanes, interactive features, and potential slide pending public input. A splash pad with spray features for children; potential for heaters to be installed in the future; shaded seating; and a new bathhouse and dressing rooms are to be included.

The City of Austin has determined that the following items will not be considered: a river, spray features with moving parts, hot tubs, and lounge chairs.

Bartholomew Park is part of a master planning process.  Concept C shows a variety of active and passive areas.  It also shows pathway and parking area development.  The plan is phased and the pool area is described as a discrete portion of the plan.  The Design Team is assuming that this is the site area for the pool improvement project.

GENERAL LAYOUT

The following slides show potential layout ideas for combining a zero entry, splash pads, slides, and leisure area with lap lane swimming.  Think of them as different rooms in a house.

Pools can be also be more organic and curvilinear in shape.  This is also an example of a zero depth entry.

Here is an example of each feature being a different pool separated by a deck in between.  Again we see zero depth entry in the far pool; and a slide and lap lanes in the foreground pools.

WET SEATING / STEPS

The following are opportunities for parents and small children to get wet together.

Zero depth entry and very shallow areas are great for sitting and visiting or playing with small children.

Wide steps also can be used for sitting with small children.  They offer a variety of depths for different size children depending what level you sit on.  Built‐in bench seating at the perimeter can appeal to adults.

NATURAL ELEMENTS

18

Page 19: BARTHOLOMEW MUNICIPAL POOL - Austin, Texas · 2019-11-29 · BARTHOLOMEW MUNICIPAL POOL Public Input Meeting 2 The Design Build Team is currently in the information gathering stage

Austin has a long history of natural swimming holes.  This is Barton Springs Pool.

19

Page 20: BARTHOLOMEW MUNICIPAL POOL - Austin, Texas · 2019-11-29 · BARTHOLOMEW MUNICIPAL POOL Public Input Meeting 2 The Design Build Team is currently in the information gathering stage

Natural elements could be used.  Rocks are good for sitting on, putting towels on, and can create obstacles that help to prevent running on the pool deck.

In a zero depth pool the water starts as ¼” and slowly gets deeper by gently sloping the bottom.  It is considered an accessible entry.  The images here are examples of zero depth pool entry.

22

Page 23: BARTHOLOMEW MUNICIPAL POOL - Austin, Texas · 2019-11-29 · BARTHOLOMEW MUNICIPAL POOL Public Input Meeting 2 The Design Build Team is currently in the information gathering stage

In a tension edge pool the water goes over the edge of the deck and drains into deck gutters when people get in and the water rises or  splashes around.  This type of edge is common in competition pools as it helps to dissipate the turbidity of the water.

Above are examples of both the traditional gutter system and a tension edge system.  The tension edge can be designed with grips.  The gutter system can be concrete, tile, metal and/or plastic.  Also above is an example of sand blasted and painted signs and information markers in a concrete deck.  This obviates the use of slick tiles in wet areas.

These are inflatable floats that are tethered to the bottom of the pool.  They can be disconnected and removed easily.

Basketball goals have a base designed to be set in sleeved holes in the deck that can then be removed and the holes capped when not in use.

Volleyball takes quite a bit of space for the number of people it accommodates, but again the posts are in a sleeved hole and can be removed and capped.  It could be managed on a time available basis.

Slides will end in a “chute” which is safer than dumping into a pool and uses less water. Slides can be integrated with landscaping.

SPLASH PAD ‐ SPRAY

Splash and spray pad will be on a separate mechanical system due the increased filtration requirements newly required by state law.  It will be a zero depth pad which does not require life guards.  Although general supervision will be ongoing at the facility.

Water can shoot up from the ground or down from tall elements in a variety of ways.

Shade can also be more natural looking.  The arbor to the right is existing on the site but will need to be repaired and renovated if it is to remain.

STRUCTURES

The existing bathhouse is not big enough to accommodate the new pool and the existing plumbing is antiquated. Depending on the final requirements, the existing exterior stone walls may be re‐used or added onto. The new facility will be designed as an open air facility with the potential to enclose in the future if the pool becomes heated.
