Confession: It puts you straight with everyone

Penance, aka confession, is the sacrament of the forgiveness of sin. You can’t beat it for conven-ience. It’s available practically whenever. Tell a priest you want to go to confession and you’ll get his attention. One bishop I know was cornered on an airplane.

Another passenger figured out what was going on and asked if he could confess too. It must have been an interesting game of musical seats. An interesting question for priests might be:

Where was the strangest place you ever administered the sac-rament of penance? The answers I’ve gathered include “in a sports bar,” “at a graduation party” and “on the golf course, walking up the fairway.”

Confession has benefits. Here are ten: 1. Confidentiality guaranteed. There’s nothing like confessing your sins to someone guaranteed not to tell anyone else. Some-times you need to talk in absolute confidence. Even under sub-poena, a priest can’t tell anyone what’s said to him in confession. He can’t even hint at it. Now that’s confidentiality.

2. Housekeeping for the soul. It feels good to be able to start a clean life all over again. Like going into a sparkling living room in your home, it’s nice when clutter is removed–even if it’s your own.

3. A balm for the desire for revenge. When you have been for-given you can forgive others. If the perfect Jesus forgives me, who am I to want to avenge the slights in my life. Think: “Why did they promote him over me?” or “Mom played favorites!”

4. Low cost therapy. It’s free, which makes it cheaper than a psychiatrist for dealing with guilt.

5. Forced time to think. Socrates said that the unexamined life is not worth living. To examine our lives and acknowledge failings marks the first step of making things right with God, others, and ourselves. Life can be more worth living when you ponder the meaning of your own life.

6. Contribution toward world peace. Gaudium et Spes, the Sec-ond Vatican Council’s Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, said that the imbalances in the world that lead to war and tensions “are linked with that more basic imbalance that is rooted in the heart of man.” Peace of soul leads to peace of heart leads to peace beyond oneself.

7. A better neighborhood. Confession leaves you feeling good about yourself, thereby cutting back the inclination to road rage

and aggressive shopping cart driving. With the grace of the sacrament you’re energized, as Jesus said to the woman caught in adultery, to “go and sin no more.”

8. Realistic self-perception. Confession helps overcome arro-gance when you have to admit you’re as much of a sinner as anyone else. It helps build tolerance for others’ perceived short-comings.

9. One more benefit of being Catholic. There are lots of bene-fits, including a sense of community, liturgical rites to help us encounter God in prayer, and the wonderful sense of humanity exemplified in the saints, from Mary, the loving Mother of God, to Augustine, the exasperating son of Monica. The sacrament that leads us to inner peace is among the greatest boons.

10. Closeness to God. Confession helps you realize that you have a close connection to God and receive his grace through the sacraments. What can be better than knowing God’s on your team, or, to be less arrogant about it, that you are on God’s.

“If, at times, the flame of charity seems to die in our own hearts, know that this is never the case in the heart of God! He constantly gives us a chance to begin loving anew.” With these words at the end of his Message for Lent, the Pope exhorts us to participate in the “24 Hours for the Lord” initiative, which invites us to celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation in the context of Eucharistic adoration. This year, it will be held on Friday and Saturday March 9-10, and will be inspired by the words of the Psalm 130:4 “With you is forgiveness.” “In each diocese,” Pope Francis recalls, “at least one church will remain open for twenty-four consecutive hours, offering an opportunity for both Eucharistic adoration and sacramental confession.”

Join our Team for the Basilica Renovations

The Basilica will be restored the same way it was built: with a huge army of contribu-tors of all sizes. Construction of the Basilica began with the groundbreaking on Oct. 15, 1929. Nine days later, the stock market crashed, beginning the Great Depres-sion. The heroes of the Basilica’s story are those thousands who were devoted to the newly canonized Thérèse of Lisieux, the Little Flower: they gave whatever they could, each contributing in some way. As you look around the interior of the Basilica, notice the plaques bearing the many names of those who gave at least $25 toward the construction costs. So many others gave in smaller amounts. Some 6,000 donors from all around the country came together in their faith and devotion. We ask each of you to consider what contribution only you can make: the person you invite to join this effort, the idea you propose, your own sacrificial gift, large or small.

The cost of construction for the Basilica was just under $300,000. It was as daunting a sum in those days as the amount we are fac-ing today to restore it. Raising that amount then was a miracle. Raising the sums needed now will only be accomplished through prayer, God’s power and the intercession of our patroness. Many joining together for this cause can be the miracle we need: w ith your help and that of others who are devoted to St. Thérèse around the country.

We are still looking for volunteer leadership and other heroes interested in contributing their wisdom, influence, and resources from among our parish community and beyond, to join forces with us for this exciting project. If you are interested in being included on our committees, please email Anna Migeon at [email protected].

SUBSCRIBE TO THE APOSTOLATE OF THE LITTLE FLOWER Are you interested in learning more about Carmelite spirituali-ty? The Apostolate of the Little Flower is a nonprofit publication and ministry of the Province of St. Thérèse of the Discalced Carmelite Friars of San Antonio. Its purpose is to spread devotion to St. Thérèse of Lisieux, “The Little Flower.” Pub-lished quarterly and sent out to approximately 2,000 subscribers, this publication includes articles from our friars on the spirituality of St. Thérèse and the Discalced Carmelites. It also shares news from the Basil-ica and the Province of St. Thérèse . Established as part of our first apostolate as The Little Flower Magazine, this historic publication reached over 100,000 subscribers in 1923. Recognizing the great de-votion of the subscribers from all over the country, the fri-ars of the Province of St. Thérèse discovered their mis-sion: to honor Thérèse, prepare for her canonization in 1925, and build a national shrine in her honor.

The next issue is coming out soon, with a Lenten theme of St. John of the Cross. If you would like to subscribe to this publication, please email your name and address to [email protected] and write “Apostolate” in the subject line. Subscription is free; donations are greatly appreciated to help with publication costs.

BELATED EXPRESSION OF GRATITUDE AND APPRECIATION On behalf of the Carmelite Friars, committee members and I, we would like to express our gratitude, our most sincere thanks and appreciation to all those parishioners and friends who supported our Parish Annual Valentine’s Dance and the Mardi Gras gathering. Both events were well at-tended and successful. It was a time of fellowship, fun, dancing, eating, and coming together to have a good time.

As for the dance, it was so nice to see so many parishioners there, having a good time. Your presence really made a difference. All proceeds from the dance will go to benefit our Basilica of the Little Flower. Again, thank you very much, and may the Lord and our beloved St. Thérèse bless you and your family abundantly.

Co-coordinatior, Fred P. Garcia
