Pastor’s Corner My Dear Friends, Twelve wonderful years has come and gone since I first arrived at St. Mary’s, and not it is time to move on to the next chapter of my life. We have done much in our time together, and we should thank God for allowing this to happen. In our time together, we got our parish out of debt, expanded our ministries, increased our weekend Masses from 4 to 8, established the Upper Room 1871, made St. Mary’s as a destination wedding site, established a sister parish relationship with San Francisco de Asís parish in Honduras, celebrated the 100th anniversary of our parish, watched our church become a basilica, established the St. Mary Health Center with its medical and dental clinics, beautified our campus in many ways, re-named our social outreach ministry the Sister Isaac Center, creating a series of Hispanic Ministries that is second to none in the Diocese of Raleigh, creating the San Andrés School of Evangelization, creating and fostering a missionary awareness and culture in our parish, creating two new playgrounds, expanding our Camillus Ministries, developed state-of-the-art courses in the sciences and arts in our St. Mary School, began our Columbarium and Memorial Garden project, and many others. So, I’m thankful for all we have accomplished. But most of all, I am thankful for, and proud of, the amazing staff we have and the joyful spirit we have in our parish. Although you may not know, our parish is seen as an amazing one in the Diocese of Raleigh – a shining star. Perhaps that is why we have been featured in such publications as the National Catholic Reporter, U.S. Catholic, Field Afar, and Maryknoll Magazine. And, you and I will be featured in an upcoming edition of Maryknoll Magazine. One of my goals in Honduras is to establish a small retreat center for Americans to come and taste mission life. Perhaps you will be one of the guests there one day. I certainly hope so! Well, that’s it for now. Know that you will have someone in the mountains of Honduras praying for you and telling stories about the amazing parishioners of the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary to all who will listen. Until we meet again, may God hold you and your loved ones in the palm of His hand! Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

Personal hygiene is something most of us take for granted; we have ac-cess to the necessities but many of our guests don’t. Hygiene items are always needed by our guests. We have volunteers that monitor our inventory and place monthly orders to purchase the supplies needed. They pick up the order, consisting of several cartons, and deliver it to the Center. The stock is shelved in our storeroom. Among the items we purchase are: bar soap, deodorant, razors, combs, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bath tissue, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and feminine products . We spend approximately $1,000 per month for these items. The money collected in the ‘needy’ boxes in Church helps fund these purchases. We have a Hygiene Cabinet that holds a few days of supplies; volun-teers refill this cabinet each day until the supply in the storeroom runs out. We often deplete most of the supply before the month is over. We always welcome donations of any kind or size of hygiene items. We accept donations of other types of items as well: adult diapers, depends, tissues, liquid dish soap, laundry detergent and other cleaning supplies. For our homeless visitors, we are able to refer them to a group called Vigilant Hope that provides a free shower trailer that parks in four dif-ferent locations around town each week; in addition to the showers, they often serve food. . A warm shower and clean towels can really boost a person’s morale. Hygiene is important to one’s well-being and we are thankful to every-one that helps us offer assistance to our guests.

The Guild is having a quilt show called Pieceworks at the Brooklyn Art Center at 516 N. 4th St this weekend on Sunday, June 24th noon—5:00 pm. Stop in and enjoy their creations. Special Need of the Week: Any hygiene articles, including your travel size hygiene items you’ve accumulated. Reminder: Next Sunday is Share Sunday. Consider bringing in non-perishable food items when you come to church. To contact The Sister Isaac Center, please call us during normal hours at 762-5491, ext. 135. RCIA (Beverly Setz) - RCIA will begin again in the fall. For more information, you may leave a message at 762-5491, ext. 121

Welcome to Fathers Ryszard & Chesco!

Please give a warm welcome to the new pastor, Fr. Ryzard, and the new

parochial vicar, Fr. Chesco! It is never easy beginning a new assignment in a community where most of the people are

strangers and the customs of different. But, I’m sure you will make them feel as home as you did when I first arrived here in 2006. I know the magic of the St. Mary hospitality will warm

the hearts of these two priests, and before you know it, they will become enchanted with you and this amazing parish!

Principal

Joyce M. Price "Let your light so shine..."

Matthew 5:16

I’d like to start out by saying how proud I am of our 26 graduates, Class of 2018. That class became a family as most do over time. Twelve of those students had been students at our school for 9 years and four others had been here for 10 years! This is a very talented

group of students who will succeed highly in high school and college.

“Thank you for the beautiful and meaningful gradua-tion ceremony. The message that you, Fr. Bob, and Mr. Mac imparted to them that they are loved and part of a community will stay with them for a life-time.”

This lovely message from a graduate’s parent states one of the many goals we have for every graduate of our school. We send them off re-membering that God is by their side always and forever. Congratulation to the Class of 2018. Below are the recipients of the awards given during the graduation ceremony on June 7, 2018: President’s Award for Educational Excellence – Laney Allen, Evan Arthur, Ben Hearne, Molly Kiser, Elizabeth Koenig, Joelle Lowery, Lilliana Myers, Holland Putney, and Colin Tuttle. Special thanks to the Hospitality Chair, Ashley Putney, and her mother who were our hostesses along with Julie Freder-iksen and Serena Lau.

Since You’ve Been Gone—Since the last day of school, the focus has been on teacher and staff meetings, final report cards, and plans for the next school year. It has been a very productive time of reflecting and summarizing the year in addition to planning for August. As you will see from the new calendar, we have attempted to include as many special event dates as we could so that you would be able to plan ahead. We are looking forward to a wonderful new school year. As we reflected on our test results from last year’s Iowa Tests, we set goals to stay above the Diocesan averages for each subject area as we do each year. We are adding additional benchmark testing which will give us short term growth indicators in addition to our current assessments. We have already been booking enrichment assemblies for our students’ enjoyment and learning. GENEROUS DONOR PROVIDES LAST $2,000 FOR THE STATE-OF-THE-ART SCOREBOARD!!!!! - Mr. Viollis and I are excited about this new scoreboard for our gym. We now have the total amount needed to purchase and install for the new school year! Volleyball will be the first team sport to enjoy this new addition.

ST. MARY EXCELS WITH TECHNOLOGY – 3-D PRINTING—Mr. Hite and Mr. Hogan have been in touch with General Electric who will be providing us with yet another updated 3-D Printer. As you have known, we were the recipients of a G.E. Additives Grant (one of 400 in the nation) which provided our students with awesome opportunities for learning to code and create a large amount of items designed by our students this year. Our teachers were able to provide this experience from grades 3-8. We can’t wait to see what’s on the horizon for this coming school year! Chess Club – Thank you to Mrs. Duma and Mr. Sneeden for teaching and coaching our Chess Club members this year. They recently compet-ed in the Wilmington Scholastic Chess Tournament and here are the results. Congratulations to our Falcon Team and those students men-tioned below! Grade 1-3 Division – Luca Duma(2nd place), Finn Gray(9th place), Olivia Dunaway(11th place) Grade 4-8 Division – Justine Pasulka(1st place), Gibson Gray(7th place), and Nick Copeland(8th place). “The Catholic School Difference” Wall Street Journal—You can find a link to the article on our Facebook page from last week’s Wall Street Journal. I hope it confirms what your child is experiencing at our school. The statements in this article were reinforced as I visited with so many families whose children have graduated from St. Mary School at our parish’s celebration of Fr. Bob. It is wonderful to hear how successful they have become in college and their careers. Their parents can say that they still remain friends with their classmates and look back favorably on their times here. We look forward to having many of them return in 2019 for the 150th Anniversary of the school. Thank you to all for sharing your children with us.
