Pastor’s Corner My Dear Friends, Today Catholic Christians celebrate the 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time. On this day, we read in the Gospel of Matthew how Jesus told his disciples, “Have no fear of the one who would destroy the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge” (Matthew 10: 28-29). This Thursday, June 29th, Catholic Christians celebrate the Feast of Ss. Peter and Paul. For basilicas of the world, this is a special day. Although it is not a holy day of obligation, basilicas are required to celebrate the day as a special solemnity. Therefore, in addition to our 7:30 a.m. Mass, we will also have a 12:10 p.m. Mass on that day.

Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – June 24 and June 25, 2017 5

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Sister Isaac Center Mary Ann Kotas, Director The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina is responsible for much of the food we distribute. Their motto is "Fighting hunger in 34 counties ... so no one goes hungry." I was required to attend a 5 hour training session this month in order to receive our certifications for the year : Safe Food Handling Course, The Annual TEFAP & Civil Rights Training, and the Annual Retail Donation Training. It was a very informative day; I truly was not aware of the scope of their involvement. Today's meeting included participants from New Hanover and Pender County, but our Wilmington branch also services Brunswick and Pender. One of the many programs is the Retail Donation Program. There are 19 retailers currently partnering with our Food Bank and the list is growing as more businesses move to the area. Last year, these 19 retail partners, with a total of 400 retail locations, donated close to 18 million pounds of food and non-food items to 250 agencies. This includes 3 million for agencies affiliated with the Wilmington branch. The Food Bank manages the relationships between the donors and the partner agency. Many years ago, we were assigned to the Food Lion in Masonboro Commons at 6400 Carolina Beach Rd and we've kept a long running relationship with them (thanks to Sr. Isaac). We have 15 teams

of volunteers that pick up our donations. Each person/team is assigned one day per month - Tuesday, Saturday or Sunday. They take coolers and ice packs from the Center and travel to the store to pick up whatever is available that day. We receive a wide range of products - meat, dairy, bakery, dry foods, produce and miscellaneous items, such as paper products, holiday decorations, toys, etc.. The items may be overstock, or things approaching the sell by/use by date, though still usable. (We have an interesting chart called the "Food Keeper" that specifies how long an item can still be safely used after the date on the package.) Once the donations are brought to the Center, everything has to be weighed by category and reported. My 'statistics' gals gather this info and report it back to the Food Bank each month. My thanks goes out to everyone involved in this process; as you can see, it takes many hands. And if you happen to stop in to Food Lion at Masonboro Commons, let them know how much their participation is appreciated.

Special Need for the Week: Remember next week is Share Sunday. Consider bringing in a non-perishable food item when you come to Mass.

RCIA (Beverly Setz) RCIA will be starting their next session in the Fall. Please watch the bulletin for details beginning mid-September. You can also call the office at 910-762-5491 ext. 121 for more information.

Update to Dedication of Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral The July 26th Dedication of Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral is approaching quickly. It will certainly be a day of joy and celebration for all in the Diocese of Raleigh. This cathedral, our Mother Church, will be a place of worship for Catholics throughout the Diocese of Raleigh. Because there is a practical seating capacity, not everyone who

wishes to attend will be able to participate in the Dedication. The Diocese greatly desires to express appreciation to those who have supported the Cathedral Project through prayer and/or contribution. Therefore, there are two opportunities we hope you will consider. First, there will be a live stream of the liturgy on the Diocese of Raleigh YouTube Channel for those who wish to view this historic ceremony. More information about this will be available closer to the Dedication date. Second, each of our eight deaneries will host a special Mass at the newly dedicated cathedral. Cape Fear Deanery Mass – 10/21/2017, 10:00 AM We thank all who helped to bring the Cathedral to fruition, and we look forward to seeing you at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in the coming months.

8 Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – June 24 and June 25, 2017 Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Principal Joyce M. Price

"Let your light so shine..." Matthew 5:16 I wish you all a safe and happy summer. Thank you for choosing St. Mary School for your child(ren).

St. Mary School summer office hours are: Monday—Thursday from 9:00 am—4:00 pm Friday from 9:00 am—12:00 pm. We will be closed during the first two week in July. Order school materials and uniforms for 2017-2018 online. Links for both are on our website. Please check our Facebook page for school event pictures and videos. The 2017—2018 calendar can now be found on the website. Some activities may be added along the way and we will update if needed.

Athletic Directory: Tony Viollis [email protected] REQUIRED ATHLETIC FORMS: If your child is consid-ering participating on any of our athletic teams they must have the 3 required forms submitted before they can officially practice. The falls sports are: Girls Tennis, Co-ed Cross country, Girls Volley-ball, Girls Cheer Leading SUMMER VOLLEYBALL CAMP: The new volleyball coach and I are considering a volleyball camp for our girls during the month of July. More details will be coming soon. If you think your daughter would be interested, please email me. RETURN OF THE ST. MARY GOLF CLASSIC: We are con-sidering the dates of Saturday, October 14, or Saturday, October 21, for next year’s Golf Classic. Location is still to be determined. Please mark your calendars, be-cause we will need your help. Our first organizational meeting will be held in June. Please do not let us miss out on this wonderful event! Come to our meeting and

see what you can do. Do you know someone who owns a busi-ness and would like to sponsor this event? Do you know someone who would make a donation to our silent auction? Those are the things that will make our event even more successful. Please say you will help. There is much to be done. Feel free to email me. NEW COURT-SIDE BLEACH-ERS: The Athletic Boosters pur-chased 3 new blue bleachers for the gym. They will be used by our physical education classes and for our athletic events. They will be put together over the summer. The bleachers will provide more seat-ing (to help with over-crowding upstairs), give the athletes and cheerleaders more space, and provide seating for those who find it difficult to climb the stairs. We are very excited to add another positive to our beautiful gymnasi-um. CONCESSION STAND SU-PERVISOR: I am looking for a parent or group of parents to help organize and run the concession stand for home games next year. You would be working with me, so you would not be doing this alone. If you would like more information feel free to contact me.

St. Mary School Alumni News

Alumni Mariah Smith Mariah and her mother recent-ly toured St. Mary School in hopes of bringing her own children here in the fall. She sent these comments after her visit. Welcome home Mariah and the whole Smith family. "“I am an alumni of St. Mary Catholic School. I attended school here from 3rd- 8th grades. St. Mary's has helped me succeed not only in high school but also college. To this day, I am still using the knowledge, academic skills, and life skills that I learned

while attending this school. I feel like I learned more at my time at St. Mary's than I did in high school. I now have two young children and have recently toured the school. The school is still as beautiful as ever and has undergone an amazing renovation while keeping the history of the school intact. I was thoroughly impressed with the curriculum and opportunities available for students. While I want my children to have a good foundation in the usual core courses, I also want them to have a good foundation in Catholic values, Spanish, technology, and music, all of which St. Mary’s offers. When your children attend St. Mary’s, you really are becoming part of a family. There are small class sizes and everyone knows each other. I look forward to sending my chil-dren here soon!”
