Pastor’s Corner This weekend, Catholic Christians celebrate the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

On this day, we hear Jesus tell his disciples, “”Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide moneybags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy. For where your treasure, there also will your heart be” (Luke12: 33-34). In other words, Jesus cautions us against the materialism of this world. At her annual summer luncheon for the ministers of the social outreach ministry, Sr. Isaac announced her retirement at the end of this calendar year. Be assured that Sr. Isaac’s work will continue in our parish. However, the name of the St. Mary-Tileston Social Outreach Ministry will be changed to “The Sr. Isaac Center.” I will keep you posted as to when the change will formally occur. Sr. Isaac and the other Sisters of St. Ursula have been a wonderful addition to our parish over the years, and they will be sorely missed. We have many months to express our thanks to the Sisters and give them our well wishes. I’ll keep you posted about formal events held for that purpose. Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – August 6 and August 7, 2016 6

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Mary Social Ministry/Tileston Outreach As we come to worship in this beautiful Basilica/Shrine, how can we not reflect our ancestors who made the decision to pass on their most precious possession – their faith. And today we are the servants whom God has asked to take care of His property. One way we do this is by volunteering one of our most precious gifts, our time. Our parishioners have been doing this for over a hundred years. However, I want to mention the 160+ men, women and children who have chosen to share some of their gifts and talents with the Tileston Outreach this past year. Four days a week we open our doors located in the basement of the Tileston building. By the end of the morning approximately 40 volunteers have been involved in serving men and women in need. We speak of those who come to us as guests, not clients since this is a ministry of the Parish. We are not an agency. Though most of our volunteers are members of St. Mary, we have folks from the other Catholic communities and Christian denominations, including a Buddhist. When our guests pass through our doors at 8:30 am we hope that they sense sincere hospitality. Our many volunteers who receive the people and do intake and arrange their files try to be vigilant, as the Gospel tells us to be, since Jesus appears to us in many faces and situations. From July 2015 until June 2016 about 6,000 people entered the building and we ministered to them with food (11,270 bags of it), clothing, hygiene products, household items, furniture and finances that they, in turn, shared with other family members. We devote all morning to helping others and although our schedule says that we close at 11:30 we rarely leave at that time. When we reach 35 guests we lock our entrance door and more often than not that occurs before 9:00 am each day that we are opened. We try hard to live our Mission statement: To serve needy men, women and their families With respect and reverence. We believe we give them HOPE by providing a hand-up, Not just a hand-out at a time of crisis. St. Mary’s is known as “the church that works with the poor” and all who serve in this ministry recognize that the gifts we have been given are to be shared.

Sister Isaac—Office of Social Ministry

Special Need for the Week: If you have items to donate please hold them until after Labor Day, or share them with one of the many Agencies in the area. We make a special plea not to leave items in the stairwell since no one is here to process them and they generally end up in the dumpster since people passing by sort through them. This does make extra work for the staff. Come September, we will be in need of volunteers to pick up food on the third Tuesday of the Month at Food Lion in Masonboro Com-mons. It is a hard job since coolers containing the food have to be carried down our stairs to the Food area in the Ministry. A large car, van or truck is needed to hold the coolers and two people doing it really helps. The commitment takes about two hours, once a month. If you are able to volunteer for this ministry, please call the Office at 762-5491 x135.

RCIA Our 2016-1017 Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults will begin in the middle of September. For anyone interested in entering into full membership with the Catholic Community please contact John Walsh at the parish office(762-5491 x114) or Mar-yann at [email protected] or Beverly at [email protected].

Knights of Columbus Council 1074

The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal organization of Catholic men founded in 1882 by Servant of God Fr. Michael J. McGivney. The principles of the Knights are Charity, Unity and Fraternity and the Fourth Degree exemplifies Patriotism. Wilmington Council 1074 was founded on January 29th 1906. The current Grand Knight is John Schmidt. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month. Members of the Fourth Degree, called “Sir Knights” are part of Msgr. Christopher J. Dennen Assembly 2017, which meets on the third Tuesday of each month. Any practicing Catholic man over age 18 who wishes to join the Knights should please contact Grand Knight John Schmidt at [email protected]. We also welcome Knights who have moved to the Wilmington area and encourage these Knights to continue their Knighthood with Council 1074. Please con-tact Grand Knight John to transfer.

Carolina Catholic is singing in Austria! The hills and the churches are alive and singing in Austria! For our first show in August, Judi Paparozzi's son, Daniel, will chat about his three trips to Austria singing in stunning Catholic Churches in Vien-na, Sankt Pölten, and Krems where he has performed under the baton of Erwin Ortner, conductor of the Austrian Imperial Choir and the Schoenberg Choir, a former member of the Vienna Boys Choir, and professor of music in Vienna. As Austria is a very Catholic country, these concerts have taken place in Catholic churches, seminaries, and at Mass. We will hear parts of Verdi’s Requiem as well as some of the music performed during Mass. This show will air on Wilmington Catholic Radio on stations 91.7 FM, 93.1FM, and 103.1 FM on Saturday, August 13th, at 11 a.m. and Sunday, August 7th and 14th, at 6 p.m. This show can also be heard on our website at wilmingtoncatholicradio.com.

"Let your light so shine..." Matthew 5:16

Until school starts, our August office hours will be Mon.-Fri., 9-3. Mrs. Linn and I have enjoyed a few days of vacation, however are now back in the office. So much work contin-ues during the summer break in a school. Thorough cleaning, painting, floor cleaning and polishing, and lots of construction in the Tileston Building have been going on throughout the summer. Mr. Viollis's newsletter tells about the gym updates. The elevator construction along with the updated bathrooms and kitchen facilities on both floors of Tileston continue. I am told that the lab construction will be starting soon. As we get closer to school, I will share updates as I receive them. I have been working to find wonderful teachers for your children. This process takes time as background checks need to be run by the diocese once I have considered teachers for the positions. I will announce the new teachers as soon as all facets of hiring are complete. We will definitely be extending our PreK Program to a full day option. Mrs. Gratwick will be managing the afternoon portion of the program. I can also announce that Mrs. Lowery will be the 2nd grade teacher. At St. Mary School, Mrs. Lowery has been our Title I Resource teacher, 6th grade teacher, and most recently Kindergarten teacher. She has earned a Masters in Special Education, Concentration in Reading, from Johns Hopkins University, holds a teaching license from Mary-land, and is currently licensing in NC. As soon as the hiring process is complete, I will be able to announce the teachers in 3rd and 4th grades, as well as Elementary Music, Band, Choir, and Art. New Admissions and Kindergarten Students - Please make certain that all immunization and health records are in the office prior to the be-ginning of school. Seventh Grade - Effective July 1, 2015, a booster dose of Tdap is needed for individuals who have not previously received it and are entering 7th grade, or by 12 years of age, which ever comes first. Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine - One dose for individuals is need-ed if entering 7th grade or by 12 years of age, whichever comes first. Sr. Isaac, who heads the St. Mary Social Ministry, will retire in De-cember. Fr. Bob announced that in her honor the ministry will be re-named as the Sr. Isaac Center. We congratulate the Preussers (Michael-Gr. 2) on the birth of Noah! We congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Huestis on the birth of their daughter! New School App Ready to Test - St. Mary School App from Appy City now available at App Store or Google Play. Let us know what you think! Want to get your $400 Annual Fee refunded? It's simple - just refer a registering family for the 2016/2017 school year! Remember, they must register and pay tuition for the 2016/2017 school year - and - let Mrs. Linn know that you are the referring fami-ly!

St. Mary School Athletics With summer vacation almost behind us, I would like to put out some infor-mation for everyone. To our new families coming to St. Mary, I am Tony Viol-lis, athletic director for our school. Our league teams are open to our 6th-8th grade students except for Cross Country. Our Cross Country team includes students from 4th-8th grade. In the fall we have a girls' volleyball team and we hope to have a girls' tennis team as well as a coed cross country team. Prac-tices will start for these two programs in early August. Coaches will be sending out email information to the parents of the interested students. If your child is interested in participating on any of these teams and you do not have the coach's contact information, please get in touch with me and I will pass your information along to the appropriate coach. ([email protected]). Over the summer we have been working hard cleaning and painting the walls of the gym and putting up 2 Bible verses that Bishop Burbidge gave to us. We still have other plans for our gym over the next few weeks which will be great for the facility and for our kids. I could not have done all of this work without the help from former booster president Tom Kennedy and present booster member Paula Smith. REQUIRED ATHLETIC FORMS: All student athletes must have completed the required 3 forms before they may participate in practices or matches. These 3 forms (Physical, Travel Slip, and Permission Slip) can be downloaded from my athletics web page. The 4th required form (Participation) is not due until uni-forms are handed out to the players. If your child participates on a non- offici-ated sport (tennis, cross country or cheerleading), you will be required to pay a $25.00 fee. If your child plays on a team that requires an official (volleyball or basketball), you will be required to pay a $35.00 fee. If your child plays 2 sports during the school year, you will only pay a total of $50.00. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. PARENTS OF ATHLETES: This year you will be REQUIRED to work at least one HOME contest for volleyball or girls' or boys' basketball contests. Last year I had a small number of different parents helping out. We had the same 6-7 parents all the time. This cannot be repeated. I will be making a fall, then a winter Sign up Genius so all parents of the fall and winter will be able to log on and sign up to work. I will be emailing them to you when I get your e mail addresses from your coach. Volleyball games start at 4, but you will need to be there after school to get ready for what you signed up to do. We need your help at admissions (door), scorer's table, concession stand, or by being a line judge. Volleyball matches will end about 5:30 unless we have 2 matches back to back. We all need to step forward and help make our team's games run smoothly. By each family doing their service time, each parent should be able to enjoy their own child's game. BOOSTER MEETING: I need help this year to keep our Athletic Booster Club active and successful. This can only happen with parent volunteers. The service that our parents have provided in the past has resulted in great fund-raisers (5K Luv2Run and SMS Golf Classic) which brought in so much money for improvements to our facility and our program, all to benefit our students. Please consider joining the Booster Club!

General Booster Club Meeting - August 10th at 6:00pm in the Tileston Center Please make an effort to be there so we can maintain the high level of pro-grams that we have been known for in the past. PROPER USE OF OUR NEW GYM FLOOR: Street shoes are not permitted on the gym floor. Students must wear tennis shoes to participate in gym clas-ses. No food, drinks, or gum are permitted on the gym floor at any time. Following these rules will help to maintain our beautiful new gym floor for decades to come
