Stewardship of Treasure

“Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not.”

EXODUS 16:4 When the Israelites gathered more than their daily portion of manna, the surplus became wormy and rotten. In the same way today, self-reliance, pride and ego leads to hoarding and excessive surplus of goods and money. Living a stewardship lifestyle helps us discern our “wants” from our “needs”. Living a generous lifestyle reminds us that God will provide all that we need and that we have plenty to share.

Due to Hurricane Florence, this bulletin is not complete.

First, keep in mind … Sending money is almost always the most efficient way to help in a disaster. Of course, before you donate anything, it’s important to do a little research about an organization’s history and reputation. One way to do so is by checking Charity Navigator, which grades established charities based on transparency and financial health.

Carolina-based relief efforts •Catholic Charities—To make a monetary donation to support our Hurricane Florence recovery efforts, please visit our Florence donation page or Mail checks payable to: Catholic Charities, 7200 Stonehenge Drive, Raleigh, NC 27613 •Michael Jordan, who owns the Charlotte Hornets and grew up in Wilmington, which was hit hard by the storm, set up a microsite to direct donations to reputable organizations. •The Diaper Bank of North Carolina, based in Durham, is collecting donations for diapers and feminine hygiene products for people dis-placed by the storm. (You can also buy items on the group’s Amazon wish list.) •Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina announced that the state itself was accepting donations to help meet the immediate needs of people affected by the storm. You can contribute online or by texting FLOR-ENCE to 20222. •South Carolina is soliciting donations for the One SC Fund, which supports nonprofits that help state residents recover from natural disas-ters. •The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, which serves an area stretching from the Research Triangle to the coast, including Wil-mington and New Bern, is collecting donations. Principal Joyce M. Price

"Let your light so shine..." Matthew 5:16

During Hurricane Florence, I missed you all and our normal routines. As I live next to a tidal creek, I evacuated to Charlotte to be with family. Since I have so many kind emails, I wanted to share those thoughts with you. We have many people praying for us. In fact,

with the lowering of category, perhaps those prayers worked. I have heard from Schoolbelles, Mrs. Browning (asst. superintendent), John Dornan (communications director of Raleigh Diocese), and Sue Rawls, our rep for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Riverside Testing. All of these people are offering prayers and support. I also heard from the head of the Theology Dept. at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh. They are praying for us and have offered help if we should we need it. We are blessed to have the support of all of these people.

Last week was so full of trainings and special events. I have been able to reschedule the trainings. Dr. Pendergrass will reschedule the assembly for middle school. We hope to be able to reschedule “Alice in Wonder-land” for Gr. 2-4. Mr. Viollis will be rescheduling any volleyball games that are being missed. Iowa Testing - As we missed class time to review skills from last year’s instruction, it would be good for students to be practicing math facts, reading, and playing learning games. We are looking ahead to celebrating St. Mary Catholic School’s 149th birthday on October 11th! We are so proud of our school and the suc-cesses of our graduates. Next year will be a very special year of celebra-tion as we celebrate the 150th birthday which will include the opening of the time capsule that was buried 25 years ago. 1809…1809…1809…1809…1809… Please link your Harris Teeter VIC card to St. Mary School…1809! Please tell family members who are here and out of town where there’s a Harris Teeter. It all counts for us!

SMS Athletics Mr. Tony Viollis - Athletic Director Hours: Monday—Thursday—3:00-6:00 pm Fencing Team: The St. Mary Athletic Program would like to form a fencing team with the help of the Cape Fear Fencing Club. The program practices in the basement of the gym. We are looking for boys and girls in grades 4-8. Participants need to fill out the three required forms to participate. If you are interested, please see me or Mr. Spahr. This is a great way for you to display your individual talent and skills. Spirit Wear: If you missed out on our first order or would like to order for next month’s Spirit Wear Day, please see JoAnn Daley for an order form. GO FALCONS! Wear your spirit wear to a volleyball game and receive free popcorn as a thank you from me to you! Athletic Booster Membership Drive: I am trying to bring back what once was a very successful Athletic Booster Club. With membership in the club you will receive an Athletic Booster t-shirt (optional) and free passes for all our home volleyball and basketball games this year. Please show your support for our programs and get involved in making our program bigger and better. I need your ideas and strength to keep our program strong for all our students here at St. Mary. Class “Pledge of Allegiance” Pre-game Leaders: I am inviting all our classes to take part in our home pre-game ceremony during our volley-ball season. The class would lead the spectators in reciting the “Pledge

of Allegiance”. If the leaders can stay to cheer on our team, they can sit back and enjoy some free popcorn as a thank you for doing a great job. I would love to see the students in each class wear their school uniform or spirit wear to the games. Show your Falcon spirit! Game dates and start-ing times are listed on the school calendar. Home Game Help: If I could go face to face and ask each of you I would, but since that’s not possible, I am asking here for help during all of our home contests. We need parental help with working the admis-sions table, in the concession stand, or working the scoreboard. This is a great way to meet other parents. It is not easy trying to do with just a few parents helping at each game. These volunteer parents would like to watch their children play in a game. Please look at the SignUp Genius link below and see where you can help. Even if your child is not on a team, we still need your help. All our profits go right back to our kids and their athletic needs. Please help out. www.signupgenius.com/go/60b054baaac2ea46-falcons Lively the Falcon Mascot: Our favorite mascot, Lively, has come back to St. Mary after being away on summer vacation. Who would like to put him on and show his stuff at our home games? If you are interested, come see me any time after school and I will introduce you to Lively. It is lots of fun!
