Assignment title: Illuminate

Scenario:

Ideas and concepts are the core of all creative art and design thinking. Innovation, imagination and intuition in the vocational world of art and design are essential for practitioners to create successful artwork, designs and products. Professionals use a wide range of intellectual, intuitive and perceptual skills in generating and developing their ideas. In order to secure commissions, practitioners must generate innovative ideas and be able to refine and present their ideas in exciting, persuasive and convincing ways. The practical skills in selecting work, mounting and framing, and hanging, lighting and installing work can make a major contribution to the overall effectiveness of the work and the way in which it is seen. Task 1b: Research

Primary and Secondary Research

Take at least 30 primary photographs

Complete at least 3 observational drawings

Find at least 20 secondary images.

Task 2: Material Experiments, Techniques and Processes

Material Samples

Produce 6 material samples using at least 4 different materials or techniques.

Be as experimental as possible, ask yourself the following questions

Task 3: Research into Presentation Techniques

Review

Write at least 400 words reviewing the presentation of your work in the Proteus Exhibition and the exhibition as a whole.

Consider the audience your presentation technique research is targeting, e.g.

A supermarket – special offers at the front of the shops so you see the offers as soon as you walk in, chocolate bars by the

checkout (created a lot of debate in recent years) themes for seasonal occasions.

Galleries – historical and contextual references as you walk into an exhibition so you are informed about what the exhibition is

about. Interactive installations aimed at children, the information will be at a certain height and child friendly language will be

used.

Task 4: Design Ideas

Designing in situ

Your final piece will be exhibited in the end of year show, therefore you need to consider not only the design itself but how you

will present it. Your design should relate to your chosen specialism, research and reflect the ideas and concepts you are trying

to communicate.

Produce at least 3 design ideas for your final piece.

Produce at least 1 design of your work ‘in situ’ explaining how you will present it in the exhibition.

Consider all the possibilities and how you would like your audience to interact with your piece. Is it site specific? Do

you need to negotiate with your lecturers in order to achieve the result you want? Do you need a plug socket, lighting,

a plinth and certain materials? This all needs to be planned and recorded in advance. It could be an installation, video

piece, light projection, or sculpture

A short statement explaining and justifying your chosen design idea (link to your ideas and concepts), expanding to

explain who you target audience is and the considerations around your target audience

Maquette/Mock-up

Once you have decided on your final design idea you will need to test any materials, composition or structure prior to making

the final piece.

Produce at least one maquette/mock up

Review the effectiveness of your maquette/mock-up, include how you may alter your final design idea as a result.

Task 5: Final Pieces

The Process You should document the process towards making your final piece. These can be included in your sketchbook or made into a blog or presentation. Show each stage of exploration and development from initial ideas, testing materials and techniques through to refining ideas and producing final pieces to exhibit.

Take photographs throughout each stage of the work

Discuss any health and safety measures you have taken

Record any technical information such as settings and timings

Review your progress so far use the ‘how to annotate your work’ sheet to help you The Exhibition Your final outcome needs to be submitted as an exhibition piece and you will be given a dedicated space to exhibit your work in.

Write a short synopsis, including the following what is your piece about? - The idea and concept behind your piece,

what where you trying to achieve?

Once you have installed your work answer the following:

What skills did you need to execute this presentation technique?

Why did you choose to present this work in this way and how does it relate to your ideas?

What audience would this be aimed at or be suitable for?

How does the audience respond/interact with your work?

What is your opinion of how you plan to present your work?

Your work should be professional presented in the exhibition space on the 9th of June.

Install your completed final piece in the exhibition according to your design idea.

Task 6: Evaluation & Presentation It is important that you evaluate your work at the end of every project so that you can identify what you have done well and what you can improve for future projects. As part of this project we would also like you to formally present you work you will have 6 minutes to discuss your ideas, concepts, design and process in relation to your final piece.

Evaluation (must be at least 600 words). Use the ‘how to evaluate your work’ sheet to help you.
