Click HereThis Bumper 7th Edition e-Newsletter will share with you
once again some of the projects that have been delivered
and are planned going into the future as well as provide
you with the link to the 2011/2012 Annual report.
The Annual General Meeting before the month of
Ramadhan saw the Mosque committees endorse the
existing Executives to continue with the excellent work that
has already been embedded. Dr Kamran Khan, Imteyaz Ali,
Asif Patel, Bashir Shama and Rashid Nadat will continue to
ensure that the BCoM delivers as best as possible on the
vision set out.
The Bolton Council of Mosques completes two decades
from its initiation in 1992. Its had some remarkable
achievements, from engaging the community in a whole
host of opportunities to tackling some real challenges
around community cohesion. The BCoM commits to
representing the Muslim Community of Bolton at various
levels, some of the engagement at strategic level may not be
visible but is of fundamental importance, with the fruits of the
discussions and approaches to be seen in years to come.
The Annual Report for 2011/2012 clearly demonstrates
how the organisation has moved over two decades and
our strength in delivering to the highest level as well as
contributing to the local strategic visions and action plans.
I pray that the Almighty accept all our efforts, keep us
steadfast in delivering to the community and that we can
continue to work as the Bolton Family leading the way in
delivery, engagement and community developments for
generations to come.
I would sincerely like to thank all of the volunteers
who dedicate their time on behalf of the community
and whose efforts make our projects possible. I hope
you enjoy reading the Newsletter and Annual Report and
hope it connects you to the work at the Bolton Council of
Mosques.
Thank you
Dr Kamran Khan
EID MUBARAK
Eid Mubarak to all and May the Almighty accept our worship and fasting in the Holy Month of Ramadhan.
Bolton Council of Mosques in partnership with the
British Liver Trust and NHS Bolton undertook a Hepatitis
Awareness Programme targeted to communities in Great
Lever and Farnworth.
Over 200 people were tested and the results sent off for
analysis. The aim was to educate the communities of the
prevalent disease in particular within the Pakistani and
Bangladeshi community as well as to test individuals with
results managed by Bolton NHS and GP partnerships.
With the success of the first two events in Farnworth and
Great Lever, the Bolton Council of Mosques will be holding
another event in the Chorley New/Old Road area. The event
will be split for females and males and everyone over the
age of 16 will be tested free of charge. A date and venue will
be confirmed in the coming weeks. The event is open to all,
no booking is necessary. If you would like to be informed of
the date of the next session then please contact the BCoM
office on 01204 363680.
There is now a lot of support for people diagnosed with
hepatitis, including support groups, websites, telephone
helplines and of course, medical and health professionals
and counsellors.

About Hepatitis C
What is Hepatitis?Hepatitis C is a virus that can damage the liver. Unlike Hepatitis A and B, there is no known vaccine to protect against Hepatitis C infection, but effective treatment is available.
What are the symptoms? Most people who have Hepatitis C virus have no signs or symptoms at all for many years. But even if you have no symptoms, you may still be developing liver damage and can still pass the virus onto others.

BCoM played hosts once again to the
Diabetes in Ramadan event in June 2012.
Professionals from the various medical
fields were invited to attend the detailed
seminar.
“It’s important to look after your health
in Ramadan but for those with Diabetes
it’s a danger to let your health slip.”
For our readers and the community we
have “The Facts about Fasting during
Ramadan” information booklet which
includes information about the risks
associated with fasting for people with
type 2 diabetes and the importance of
consulting their healthcare professional
prior to fasting. Useful tools are enclosed
within the booklet such as a Blood Sugar
Tracker, enabling those who fast to record
their glucose levels during Ramadan
providing an easy point of reference
in managing daily food intake and
medication timing.

All pilgrims going to Hajj or Umrah are
required by the Government of Saudi
Arabia to have a valid certificate of
vaccination against meningococcal
meningitis ACWY. This vaccine should
have been received not more than 3
years and not less than 10 days before
arrival in Saudi Arabia, and should have
a record showing the traveller’s full name.
The vaccination is also a requirement for
obtaining a visa. If you were vaccinated
more than 3 years ago, you will need to
get re-vaccinated otherwise your visa
application will be turned down and you
will be refused entry.

Unfortunately many people still believe
that meningitis and septicaemia only
affect babies and children. This is not the
case. Meningitis can affect anyone, of
any age, at any time; striking in minutes
and killing within hours. Knowing the
symptoms of the disease, trusting
your instincts and getting medical help
immediately can save lives.

Symptoms can appear in any order. Some may not appear
at all. Meningitis and septicaemia often happen together.
It is important to be aware of all the signs and symptoms.
If you suspect meningitis or septicaemia, get medical help
immediately.
• Meningitis
• Septicaemia
• Meningitis & Septicaemia
Key Meningitis Facts• Meningitis can strike at any time, regardless of health,
gender, age, race or class.
• People over 55 are at risk of meningitis as our immune
systems weaken as we get older.
• Adults can still suffer the same after-effects from
meningitis as children such as brain damage, hearing
and sight loss and where septicaemia (blood
poisoning) has occurred, loss of limbs and scarring.
• A survey has shown that one in four adults in the UK
knows of someone who has had meningitis.
Meningitis At Risk Group – Over 55’s• As our immune system weakens as we get older, we
are more susceptible to illnesses, such as meningitis.
• With the over 55 population being at risk of meningitis,
they are offered apneumococcal vaccine at 65. This is
available at any GP surgery or health centre across the
UK.
• Look out for yourself and others. Meningitis symptoms
can disguise themselves as a common cold or flu,
so it’s important to remain vigilant to the symptoms
of meningitis, trust your instincts and seek medical
help if concerned.
• If living alone always let someone know if you are
feeling unwell, they can check on you and get help
if needed.

Take action against TBKnowing about tuberculosis will help you to look out for
yourself and those close to you. At two seperate events,
over 75 people joined the partnership between the Bolton
Council of Mosques, Bolton Multi Cultural Integration group
to learn more about TB.
Guest speakers and professionals from NHS Bolton –Debra
Malone and Stacey Farrow gave a detailed presentation
on the sign and symptoms of TB, how to refer and general
information on how communities can continue to educate
themselves on this prevalent disease.
Have you heard of Tuberculosis? It’s often called TB for short. Tuberculosis is an infection
caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This is a bacterium
or germ that mainly affects the lungs, though it can harm
any part of the body. Although you can get ill with TB, it can
be cured by finishing a course of antibiotics.
Types of TBThe most common type of TB is in the lungs, known as
pulmonary TB. Only TB of the lungs or throat can be
infectious. TB can affect any part of the body including
kidneys, brain or bones. This is called non-pulmonary TB
and is not infectious.
How common is TB in the UK?TB cases in the UK are still low – but they have been rising
since the 1980s – each year:
• roughly 8,500 people find out that they are ill with TB
• nearly everyone is successfully cured with a free course
of treatment
How is TB spread?People get TB when they breathe in the TB bacteria, which
are spread through the air. But most people won’t get ill
because:
• TB bacteria are only in the air after someone with
infectious TB coughs or sneezes.
• You need to spend many hours close to a person with
infectious TB to breathe in enough bacteria to be at risk.
• Most people’s immune systems are strong enough to kill
off TB bacteria.
You cannot get TB by sharing cutlery, bedding or clothes.
“Cases of TB are on the rise, and because the
symptoms are similar, many cases are being mistaken
for flu”
TB Alert - Tuberculosis Awareness
don’t pass it onTuberculosis can be spread through the air
when someone with infectious TB coughs or
sneezes. Getting treatment can help stop TB
being passed on.
Common TB symptoms are:
• a cough for three weeks • fever • tiredness
• night sweats • weight loss • no appetite
Any of these could mean TB.
Go to a doctor – TB is curable!

www.thebcom.org
What is an MRI / CT scan?A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scanner and/or
Computerised Tomography (CT) Scan is used to scan the
body allowing the Radiologist to give the Coroner the cause
of death.
This avoids a post mortem and is in keeping with legal
requirements. It also satisfies the needs of many families
who wish to preserve dignity and avoid their loved ones
from undergoing a post mortem.
How do I choose to have an MRI / CT scan
instead of a Post Mortem?Where a Post Mortem is necessary, the Coroner may
consider the MRI / CT scan option to determine cause of
death. However it is not acceptable in all cases and the
Coroner will advise you accordingly.
If you wish to consider a scan you will need to advise the
Coroner’s office who will consider the suitability and if it
is acceptable, the Coroner will liaise with the members
of the community who assist in making the necessary
arrangements.
Members of the Muslim Community can contact the BCoM
who will make the necessary contacts to help through this
process.
How much will the MRI cost and who needs to pay?The scans are not funded by the coroner’s service and
therefore will need to be paid for by the bereaved family.
The cost will depend on the type and number of scans
required. There is also a cost for the transportation to the
MRI unit and the Hospital carrying out the MRI /CT scan.
However you will be advised before agreeing to proceed
with this option.
Where and when will the MRI take place? The MRI Scan will usually be carried out either before
8am or after 5pm and will be carried out at a local hospital
depending on the availability of the scanners. Once the
MRI is completed and the cause of death determined, the
Coroner will release the body which will be returned to the
agreed place of rest.
In the event that the radiologist is unable to determine
the cause of death then the deceased will be returned to
the Mortuary and the coroner will decide on what type of
examination is required.
MRI / CT National Approach
The work around Non invasive post mortem takes a
new era with new partnerships created reducing the
cost of this service to support families with a first class
service at a time of grief and loss.
It is the dedication of our local coroner Jennifer
Leeming and BCoM Champion Mohammed Mangera
that this work is replicated and developed not just for
Muslims in Bolton, but Muslims across the country.
Over the last 6 months the communities in Yorkshire,
Sheffield, Bury, Rotherham, Doncaster, Leeds and
Newcastle have benefitted in the sharing of best
practice. BCoM has been supporting the communities
to benefit from the work that has been achieved in
Bolton already.

Khalid will once again be taking a group of 30 boys
to the Waterpark on the 24th August for 3 days. The
weekend promises to be a fun-filled, action-packed
adventure.
The residential will enable young people to overcome
boundaries, and deal with challenging situations
outside their comfort zone, in order to develop their
confidence, build on new skills and learn through
fun. The next waterpark residential wil take place in
November 2012.
Lads Only Residential
On Friday 25th May 2012 three young volunteers from
the Bolton Council of Mosques left for a residential to be
trained as young volunteers for the National Citizenship
Service (NCS). This is a program that entails life changing
experience for 16 year olds run by Bolton Lads and Girls
club over the summer which started the first week of July
2012.
The NCS programme has been designed to give young
people the chance to challenge themselves, learn new
skills and put something back into their local community.
The BCoM supported the group of 3 young volunteers,
and an adult member of staff to take part in this project.
The young people that took part in NCS had an action
packed summer to remember while gaining great
experience and new skills to add to their CVs.
The program was made up as follows:
Week 1 – ADVENTURESix days of intense outdoor activities at a residential
centre in Scotland, young people took part in a real
adventure – overcoming barriers and taking part in fun
activities to get to know their team mates.
Week 2 – LOVE BOLTONYoung people spent five days at Bolton University’s
Halls of Residence getting to know their town and took
part in workshops and local activities.
Week 3 – ACTIONYoung people undertook work with their team to plan
and design a community action project to help make a
positive difference to their local community.
The program has been successfully completed by the
group of young people from BCoM who gained valuable
life experiences. They will be presented with a certificate
of achievement to celebrate their success with their team
mates and NCS staff and volunteers in October of this
year.

It’s been a fruitful 10 months with the Over 40’s, a learning
curve with lots of food and fun!! From debates, health
awareness and winter warming tips the men have had it all.
With a nationally growing concern for health and wellbeing
the group of 35 men have taken part in a variety of health
programs and heard it here straight from the professionals;
Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Brain Stroke, TB and Cancer to
name a few.
They’ve had their say on the health system, chatted to the
local officers and questioned the pharmacist on the why’s,
how’s and what’s!
A day in York got the group out walking the cobbled streets,
with a tour guide for the history buffs, and the lucky group
got plenty of sun.
A huge thanks to Bolton CVS, the PCT and our volunteers
Yaqub, Shakeel and Ibrahim not to mention the most
important member of the group, Adam Bhai the cook.
But there’s more to come in September when we resume on
the 5th September 2012, every Wednesday from 10am until
1pm.

On the 6th May a fire broke out a home in the Halliwell
area, although no injuries we felt it important to get
out and raise awareness of the benefits of a smoke
alarm and fire checks. Working closely with the Fire
service we went door to door with some of the BCoM
Volunteers to raise awareness of the terrifying dangers
not only to you but your family. Fire is worrying and
dangerous, but we can do something about it! The Fire
service provides Home Fire Risk Assessment checks
and fits smoke alarms for free!
Ask Yourself• Do you have a working smoke alarm?
• Do you have an escape plan?
• And if you can’t get out, does your family
know the escape plan?
• Have you ever had any near misses

A pilot project was instigated by the Bolton Council of
Mosques to support some of the Mosques in Bolton to
engage and recycle plastic bottles used as part of the Iftar
at mosques.
As the worshippers break the fast at mosque, a large
quantity of bottled water is consumed and with this a large
volume of plastic waste is accumulated.
Taiyabah Mosque, Makki Mosque, Darul Quran to name a
few mosques benefitted in extra recycling bins provided by
Environmental Services at Bolton Council.
Supporting the recycling in Bolton has proved a massive
success and has benefitted the Mosques in reducing costs
of disposing of the waste.

14th July at the Victoria Square saw the fifth Spirit of
Bolton event thrive once again. The event celebrates
the positivity of the countless partnerships coming
together to work, enjoy and build a brighter Bolton.
The day, started by the mayor, consisted of traditional
community activities of cultural significance. BCoM
Exec Imteyaz Ali along with leaders from other faith
groups said a few words at the opening of the event.
Groups from all over Bolton helped build an energised
and friendly ambiance with henna, calligraphy and face
painting to name a few; bringing the Bolton Family
together.
Spirit Of Bolton
BCoM was once again a part of the Memorial Day held
on the steps of the Town Hall, with Mayor Councillor
Guy Harkin to share in remembering the lives of over
20 million innocent men women and children affected
in one way or another by the atrocities of genocide.
The Holy Quran emphasises that all of mankind in spite
of difference of colour, language, faith and nationality
is a single brotherhood, because all are the creation
of One God. The final status of the each person in the
sight of Allah (God Almighty) depend on how he or she
has fulfilled their obligations to other people.
All over the world from one corner to another with
Muslims, Jews, Christians and people of all other faiths
we pray together that our leaders have the courage
and conviction to do what’s right for humanity for the
children of the future and for a better world.
The event included performances by young people,
and an African drummers group from the Great Lever
area in Bolton, along with readings and prayers from
faith leaders. BCoM’s Sufya was at the event to
recognise the continued plight of the victims past and
present.
Genocide Memorial Day
The Mosque is a focal point for the Muslim community.
After home and workplace it is the most frequented
place for a Muslim. The Mosque primarily is a place of
worship, but also serves as an educational centre for all
members of the family and has many other functions.
The base of activities within a mosque have broadened
since the 1980’s, as British Muslims became more
effective in dealing with local governance and gained
in confidence and experience, to address wider
issues raging from interfaith dialogue to political
representation.
The Mosque’s network, both local and national,
represents a huge investment of time, money and
devotion. The mosque can be toured by schools,
organisations and individuals wanting to learn more
about the Mosque and the religion of Islam. The tour
itself contains information identifying key areas within
a mosque, its purpose, its history and its importance in
the lives of Muslims in Bolton and Nationally.
