    The service begins on the laminated cards with the Lord’s Prayer.

    THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

    LORD of all power and might, who art the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of thy name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of thy great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

    FIRST READING: Hosea 12.2-6 Read by Eugene Chin

    2 The LORD has an indictment against Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways, and repay him according to his deeds. 3 In the womb he tried to supplant his brother, and in his manhood he strove with God. 4 He strove with the angel and prevailed, he wept and sought his favour; he met him at Bethel, and there he spoke with him. 5 The LORD the God of hosts, the LORD is his name! 6 But as for you, return to your God, hold fast to love and justice, and wait continually for your God. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

    PSALM: 107.1-9, 43 Please join in saying the verses in bold.

    1 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good: for his loving mercy is for ever.

    2 Let the Lord's redeemed say so: whom he has redeemed from the hand of the enemy,

    3 And gathered in from every land, from the east and from the west: from the north and from the south.

    4 Some went astray in the wilderness and in the desert: and found no path to an inhabited city;

    5 They were hungry and thirsty: and their heart fainted within them.

    6 Then they cried to the Lord in their distress: and he took them out of their trouble.

  • 3

    7 He led them by the right path: till they came to an inhabited city.

    8 Let them thank the Lord for his goodness: and for the wonders that he does for the children of Adam;

    9 For he satisfies the thirsty: and fills the hungry with good things.

    43 Whoever is wise, let them observe these things: and consider the loving-kindness of the Lord.

    SECOND READING: Colossians 3.1-11

    1 So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, 3for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. 5Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). 6On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. 7These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life. 8But now you must get rid of all such things—anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth. 9Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices 10and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. 11In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all! Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

    THE GOSPEL Remain standing

    The Lord be with you. And also with you.

    The Holy Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Luke: 12.22-31 Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

    22 Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. 23For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? 26If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? 27Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 28But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! 29And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. 30For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

    The Service continues on the laminated card with the Nicene Creed.

    Please join in singing the

    HYMN DURING COMMUNION

    2

    Human pride and earthly glory, sword and crown betray God’s trust; though with care and toil we build them, tower and temple, fall to dust. But God’s power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower.

    4

    Daily doth th’Almighty giver bounteous gifts on us bestow; his desire our soul delighteth, pleasure leads us where we go. Love doth stand at his hand; joy doth wait on his command.

    3

    God’s great goodness aye endureth, deep his wisdom, passing thought; splendour, light and life attend him, beauty springeth out of naught. Evermore from his store new-born worlds rise and adore.

    5

    Still from earth to God eternal sacrifice of praise be done, high above all praises praising for the gift of Christ his Son. Christ doth call, one and all: ye who follow shall not fall.

    Robert Bridges (1844-1930) alt. after Joachim Neander (1650-80) Australian Hymn Book 465ii alt.
