BC/YUKON AREA 81 DELEGATE

Delegate’s Diary - November 2012 Hello my friends,

I have one more Public Outreach Committee conference call, as part of my role with the World Service Conference (WSC). I

am going to miss being able to offer feedback to all the wonderful public service announcements produced by the World

Service Office, before they come to final production and appear on TV.

A reminder that registration for the 2013 International Al-Anon Convention in Vancouver on July 5 – 7 is open on the

website – www.al-anoninternationalconvention.org – so do check it out. I’ve registered and am really excited! And, I am

also going to attend the Day of Connection the day before the Convention opens!

The working title for a new piece of literature is “Intimacy in Alcoholic Relationships” and sharings are needed. The World

Service Office (WSO) currently has about 525 sharings but needs many more in order to produce the book.

Here are some questions and answers that might be of interest to you, with regard to our Conference Approved Literature

(CAL):

Q: Can a group photocopy a couple pages from our books and hand them out to newcomers?

A: If the intent is to do this at random, as “handouts” for newcomers to take home and read, or to supply on an ongoing

basis, the answer is no. As you probably know, all Al-Anon literature is copyrighted. The “Digest of Al-Anon and Alateen

Policies” in the Service Manual provides procedures to follow regarding this. (See pages 103-105 of the 2010-2013 edition.)

Forms to request reprint permission are available from the WSO, and each request is evaluated on its merits and the

circumstances. As it states on page 105 of the Manual, for most reprint requests we can only grant written permission for

“limited excerpts” (usually a couple sentences to a paragraph).

However, there is one exception to this: Members may copy Conference Approved Literature (and The Forum) for use in

Al-Anon/Alateen meetings without written permission, provided it is for a one-time use (such as for a meeting topic), the

photocopy is limited to what can be reasonably discussed within one meeting, and the material is not for sale or being

distributed beyond that particular meeting. When this is done, we are asked that the following credit the groups and the

World Service Office. (Page 67, Service Manual)

line is included: “From (name of book or pamphlet), copyright 20__, by Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc. One-

time reprint permission granted by Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc.”

If, rather than using as a meeting topic, the intent of photocopying material is to express our gratitude for the program by

“paying it forward” with generosity to the newcomers, it is recommend giving them a complimentary Newcomers packet,

pamphlet, or the new soft cover edition of How Al-Anon Works (B-32). This makes it clear that the material is actually

Conference approved, and reflects our program in the best light.

Q: Can members create a pamphlet and put the Al-Anon logo on it?

A: As it states on page 104 of the Service Manual, “The World Service Conference has authorized Al-Anon Family Group

Headquarters, Inc., also known as WSO, to be the sole publishing agency for the fellowship worldwide. Therefore, no

Al-Anon group, Information Service (Intergroup), Literature Distribution Center, or any other service arm may produce or

publish its own literature or sell outside literature and/or materials.”

Here is some historical perspective as to why this is our policy. Conference Approved Literature came about from

discussions held in 1961 at Al-Anon’s very first World Service Conference. At the time, we had very little material of our

own. Many local groups and service structures were writing and distributing their own literature, which varied widely in

quality and content. Other groups were using more and more outside literature, much of which did not reflect Al-Anon

philosophy. These pieces were sometimes religious in tone, or one person’s opinion of what to do to “fix” the alcoholic. As

a result, great disparity existed from meeting to meeting.

At that first Conference, our cofounder, Lois W., described why she felt we needed a process for Conference approval:

“You see, this whole idea of the Conference is to continue Al-Anon into the future, in usefulness and in unity. The

matter of unity is why we should have Conference Approved Literature, so that sometime one part of the country

doesn’t get a particular slant and go off on its own way while another section goes another way—all under the name

of Al-Anon.”

The first few Conferences developed a process to give conceptual approval for the development of Al-Anon literature, and it

was the will of the Conference to recommend exclusive use of CAL in Al-Anon meetings.

As far as use of the Al-Anon logo, page 104 of the Manual also states: “The logo without the AFG was adopted by the WSO

for easy identification of stationery, service tools, and other Al-Anon/Alateen material. Al-Anon/Alateen service arms (such

as Areas, districts, and Information Services) and conventions with Al-Anon/Alateen participation may use this logo without

alteration for identification on printed materials.”

My final ‘Delegate’s Diary’ will be in December, and so until then, thank you for allowing me to be of service.

Love in Service, Shirley

2012 Area 81 Assembly has been a wonderful success!

You participated, you asked questions, you listened and you

laughed. Together, we grew in service.

We can feel a sense of accomplishment with our decisions and

pride in the manner with which we handled discussions.

Assembly will be held in Langley BC for the next

three years.

We learned an enormous amount about the business

of Al-Anon from Shirley T, our outgoing Delegate.

Lois K is our incoming Delegate.

Henny K, our outgoing Alternate Delegate, provided

context for our assembly location discussion.

Janis A is our incoming Alternate Delegate.

We will take further action with a technology thought

force in our area.

We made a commitment to elevate Alateen in our

area.

We have an increased awareness of the importance of

diversity for the future of Al-Anon in our area.

We share enthusiasm for and offer support to the

2013 International Convention host committee. We

are excited participants!

I am blessed to have the opportunity to be of service to a program that I dearly love. Thank you to everyone who sat in a chair.

BC/YUKON AREA 81 TREASURER

Well the 2012 assembly is now over, it was good to see so many past and new friends.

The treasurer’s email address is now up and working it is

[email protected] please use this for all correspondence.

The group contribution form is now being put on the Area 81 web site for downloading, and the current

form will expire Dec 31 2014, which will be the end of my term.

In the financial report we discussed what it costs to hold a meeting at your home group different for all no

doubt but something we probably don't talk enough about. The service manual on pages 53 and 54 outlines it

very well.

For the next Bulletin I should have the cost of this past assembly to report.

BC/YUKON LITERATURE

Literature Corner – November The Pamphlet “The Concepts “ P-57. How far was I from knowing about the concepts in Al-Anon when I arrived? I did not

have a clue about how they work and how to apply them to my life. My answer today is that I was not ready to practice them.

My spiritual blindness did not allow me to focus farther than my insanity.

First, I listened, and I realized that I was not alone. Second, I practiced the steps, putting my recovery first. I learned that

being first is not a selfish attitude. The steps are for me, and I accept that I have a problem. Soon I started to change without

knowing it.

When I was ready, my world was enhanced. I started practicing the traditions in my group and in my personal life. I learned

about unity in the group and in my family, and became aware how important it is that my group continues and grows like me.

Many years had passed, and it was funny for me, because I started doing service before I started to read and look at the

concepts of service. I did not know that by doing service I was carrying the message to the outside world.

I understand today that Steps, Traditions and Concepts are in this order for a reason. And I undertand why I stayed in the

steps for a long time, before I began practicing traditions and concepts. My higher power was helping me to understand and

practice these principles in all my affairs. I could not give back something that I did not have, and doing service is for me a

way of saying thank you to Al-Anon for my spiritual recovery.

KELOWNA - AIS/LDC

KELOWNA AIS BULLETIN SUBMISSION

Hello to all my fellow AFG members throughout the BC/Yukon. It is November and that is NAAW (National Addiction

Awareness Week) various addiction awareness seminars and open houses are held nation wide. Here in our little corner of

the province /country in Kelowna we have several events going on. The community of Kelowna participates with one full

week of events. One of the events is community wide open houses. AIS participate, in this every year and it is one of our

biggest outreach projects. The open house is from 2 to 7pm on Nov 22nd

, held at a large church hall in the community. The

church does not put on the event it is just the venue that is large enough and central to the community. AIS will be there with

a large display board with Al-anon Alateen posters as well as the 2013 outreach forum AFA (Al-anon Faces Alcoholism)

with meeting lists stapled to the back and many other outreach tools. This year we are hoping to have an Alateen section

specifically; as last year the Alateen information was on demand. We will also have the PSA’S (public service

announcements) playing on a laptop.

The AIS/LDC has made some new positive changes to our outreach since coming home from assembly. We stepped up to

address the Diversity challenge by updating our meeting lists with wheelchair accessibility. In looking into all the meeting

places where Al-Anon and Alateen are held I was amazed to find out that all our meeting venues are wheelchair accessible.

That is now noted on our meeting lists. At our next LDC meeting we will address the accessibility of pamphlets available in

other languages and how to let members know of their availability. We also created an Alateen business card with the Chat

line noted on one side and the Alateen meeting locally on the other side. This has already been distributed at the Alateen

meeting, family and youth counseling agencies, Doctors offices, school counselor offices as well as it now can be picked up

at our LDC. Be sure to drop into our Local LDC and pick up a few Alateen cards and get some Holiday shopping done.

(Your turn to talk)

ASSEMBLY 2012 - From the Hosting Committee Thank you to everyone who attended this year's BC/Yukon Area 81 Assembly. District 9 had the privilege

of hosting this year's assembly and on behalf of all the district 9 Al-Anon members I would like to say thank you. Thank you to the Area Executive who guided the way and to district 11, who hosted Assembly 2011 and who

passed on many valuable suggestions. A special thank you to Janis A. who provided the many details of the

hosting process and was always there when we needed her. Whenever we had questions or were unsure about the process, there was always someone ready to provide support.

When we were first approached to host the Assembly, we were willing but had many questions. By trusting the program and supporting each other, things fell into place. We plan to review the hosting process and

pass on some suggestions to next year's hosting committee. We will need to improve the lunch order form to

reflect the needs of members wanting a gluten free or vegetarian lunch. We will also pass on the location of the fuse box when coffee and tea is not ready because the fuse is blown. We would like to thank everyone who

attended for their patience, words of encouragement and for their generous support.

Throughout the year we worked together as a district. Our members worked hard and were always ready

to jump in and volunteer for a job or a committee. Many Al-Anon members new to the program came out and helped and gathered information on service. As a district, we received the many gifts of service by hosting the

assembly and we had fun! We would encourage and provide support to any district thinking about possibly hosting Assembly 2013. In Gratitude, Raffaela, District 9 Rep., Vancouver Argyle Monday Night
