  • Draw a new experienceOnly the BD Vacutainer® UltraTouch™ blood collection set combines BD PentaPoint™ comfort bevel technology with a RightGauge™ ultra-thin wall cannula.

BD PentaPoint™ comfort bevel enhancements for blood collection:

    • Thinner profile, more gradual bevel slope, electrochemical etching and micro-bondedlubrication minimise penetration forces1*:

    • The only blood collection needle with anoptimised 5-bevel design:

BD 5-bevel technology minimises patient discomfort by reducing penetration force by 32% compared to BD Vacutainer Push Button 3 bevel needles.1

    Thinnerprofile

BD RightGauge™ cannula technology improves venepuncture and flowrate** with:

    • Ultra-thin cannula wall - extends inner diameterwhile maintaining the outer diameter / gauge size.

    • Inner diameter of the cannula affects shear forcesthat lead to haemolysis and the speed of bloodflow / tube-fill time.2

    • Using a smaller gauge allows easier access tosmall, difficult veins.

BD RightGauge™ provides the benefits of a smaller gauge and a larger inner diameter at the same time.

*Discard tube requiredwhen used with a wingsetCLSI guidelines recommend that when a winged blood collection set is used for venepuncture and a coagulation tube is the first tube needed, the phlebotomist must first collect a discard tube. The discard tube is used to prime the ‘deadspace’ tubing of the collection set, which ensures maintenance of the proper anticoagulant to blood ratio in the first tube filled. The discard tube must be a nonadditive or a coagulation tube and does not need to be completely filled.1

The importance of the 360º minimum fill indicator.1The frosted line around the tube represents the minimum volume of blood required for appropriate analysis. All blood collection tubes should be checked for appropriate fill volume but this is even more pertinent in BD Vacutainer® Citrate, where failure to have appropriate fill could result in clinical inaccuracies.

    360º minimum fill indicator

    2.7 mL draw tube13 x 75 mm full draw

    1.8 mL draw tube13 x 75 mm full draw

Always allow the tube to fill until the blood ceases to flow

The tube is correctly filled when the blood is above or level with the minimum fill line indicator, which is a frosted line at the top of the tube.

  • Minimising preanalytical variables

Here are a few tips to help ensure you are taking the necessary actions to reduce preanalytical variables that could impact specimen quality.

    • Perform venepuncture according to your institution’s procedures.

    • The tourniquet should be applied for no longer than one minute. Remove assoon as blood flow is established.2

    • A discard tube should always be used to remove air from a winged bloodcollection set, prior to all other tubes.

    • A BD Vacutainer®

blood transfer device (36488000) should be used in caseswhere blood is drawn with a syringe.

    • Maintain tube at a downward angle below the puncture site.

    • Always allow the tube to fill until blood flow ceases.

    • Immediately after draw, gently invert tube 3–4 times. Do not shake.

    • Once collection is complete, ensure the tube is filled to either level with or abovethe minimum fill line, if not consider collecting a second tube.

Important: this document does not replace the product instructions for use. For more information on how to use a BD Vacutainer Citrate tube, please consult the instructions for use or pictorial instructions for use shown on the outer packaging.
