Instruction

1. Grouping: Lab group is not predetermined and consists of 3 members (maximum).

2. Pre-Lab Assignment (if any): Must be submitted to the instructor at the beginning of lab

sessions. Verified by the instructor and returned to the students at the end of lab session. The

verified pre-lab must be attached with the final report for submission.

3. Lab Activities: All laboratory activities must be carried out in this laboratory and to be

completed within the given times.

4. Demonstration: Student must demonstrate the experiment to the respective instructor.

5. Report Submission: Report must be submitted to the respective instructor upon

COMPLETION of lab session.

Introduction to Open Loop and Closed Loop Position Control System

3.0 Overview

EXPERIMENT 1 (a)

Figure 1 shows the block diagram of an open loop position control system. From this figure, the

output shaft will move when the amplifier receives an input from the input shaft. The output shaft

will not move if this input is zero. This means that when the output shaft is rotating towards a

desired angle, the input signal must be reduced to zero immediately when the output shaft is very

close to this angle.

EXPERIMENT 1 (b)

Figure 2 shows the block diagram for a closed loop position control system. In the absence of load

disturbances, the motor can only cease to move when the output shaft position is exactly equal to

the input shaft position otherwise an error voltage will exist which will be amplified by the

amplifier. The output of this amplifier will force the motor to move.

5.0 Experiment Procedures 5.1 EXPERIMENT 1 (a): OPEN LOOP POSITION CONTROL SYSTEM

5.1.1 Connect the circuit as shown in Figure 3. Set both the Input and Output potentiometers to

zero. Do not switch on the Power Supply until your circuit has been checked by the

instructor. Switch “ON” the Power Supply and set the scale of the Attenuator Unit to 1.

5.1.2 Turn the Input Potentiometer clockwise and record its angle when the Output Potentiometer

has just started to move. Record the input voltage by reading the display on the Tacho Unit.

Repeat this step for anti-clockwise rotation of the Input Potentiometer.

5.1.3 Repeat steps 5.1.2 for other scales on the Attenuator Unit and tabulate your results.

5.1.4 Vary the Input Potentiometer so that the Output Potentiometer is at particular angle (decide

by yourself). When the Output Potentiometer has been finally positioned at your set angle,

apply some disturbance to the output shaft by turning the shaft using your fingers and

observe the Output Potentiometer.

5.1.5 Switch “OFF” the Power Supply.

5.2 EXPERIMENT 1 (b): CLOSED LOOP POSITION CONTROL SYSTEM

5.2.1 Connect the circuit as shown in Figure 4.

5.2.2 Set the switch on the Operational Amplifier unit to 100k Ω resistor.

5.2.3 Set both the Attenuator and the Input Potentiometer to zero.

5.2.4 Switch “ON” the Power Supply. If the motor rotates continuously, vary the zero set on the

Pre-Amplifier unit until the motor stops.

5.2.5 Set the scale on the Attenuator to 1 and vary the zero set on the Pre-Amplifier unit so that

the Output Potentiometer is zero. Turn the Input Potentiometer clockwise and anti-

clockwise. Observe and note down the movement of the Output Potentiometer.

5.2.6 Vary the Input Potentiometer so that the Output Potentiometer is any desired angle. Apply

some disturbance to the output shaft by using your fingers.

Increase the applied torque and observe the ammeter reading on the Power supply unit.

Make sure that the motor current does not exceed 2 Amp.

5.2.7 Switch “OFF” the Power Supply.
