P&C Social committee who have organised the opportunity this Thursday for all of the Beecroft students to lovingly hand select a special gift to help celebrate this special day. Opportunity Class (OC) Applications for 2019 Opportunity classes cater for highly achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These classes help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 1 August 2018. If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2019, you need to apply soon. You will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address). Detailed instructions on how to apply online are now available at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 The application website opens on Tuesday 1 May 2018 and closes on Friday 18 May 2018. No late applications will be accepted. There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assistance. You must submit only ONE application for each student. An Expression of Interest form will be sent home on Wednesday to all Year 4 students. Please note this form informs our school of your intention to apply online and is not an application form. NAPLAN Online The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) has begun to move from a pen and paper assessment to an online assessment. This year Beecroft Public School is 1 of 500 schools across the state to participate in the transition approach for NSW to complete the assessments online. The NAPLAN Online test window for Year 3 & Year 5 students will occur between 15 – 25 May. A note will be sent home this week outlining the NAPLAN timetable for students in Year 3 and 5 at our school. A Trip to the Theatre Josephine Wants to Dance

Kindergarten were very excited to start the new term off with an excursion to the Glen Street Theatre. Josephine Wants to Dance is a story about dreams, believing in yourself…and a dancing kangaroo. The Kindergarten students loved catching the bus to the performance and there was lots of talk about the brolgas and lyrebirds.

Here are a few recounts of their day.

Mother’s Day Stall Thursday 10 May – All gifts $5 The P&C is running a Mother’s Day Stall, this Thursday 10 May. The children will visit the stall as a class during the day, where they are welcome to buy a gift ready for this Sunday. Your child will need to bring their money in a labelled purse or wallet and a small shopping bag. The cost of the gifts has been set at $5.00. The correct money would be greatly appreciated by the stallholders. Festival of Instrumental Music – FOIM Yesterday I had the privilege of accompanying our Advanced Strings group to a combined rehearsal at Croydon P.S with many other students from neighbouring primary schools. The students are preparing for one of the many highlights on their event calendar – The Festival of Instrumental Music. The Festival of Instrumental Music presents concerts of diverse and challenging repertoire, as well as some specially commissioned works by Australian composers, at the Sydney Opera House. This year the Combined String repertoire includes Crossing Pirates’ Cove by Deborah Baker Monday, Susan H Day’s Tango D’Amour and an arrangement with the Combined Recorders of Handel Highlights by Tracy Burjan and Susan Sukkar. Our students will perform at the Banksia Concert on Monday 21 May at the Sydney Opera House.

Sports Report

Sport Report In the heat last Thursday Leah d.O and Angelina G represented the Beecroft Zone in Girls Football (Soccer). By all accounts the level of competition was very high and it was a nerve-wracking wait for the Sydney North Team to be announced. Congratulations to Angelina and Leah who were both selected in the Sydney North Team! We wish them well at the next level of competition in June in Kiama! Congratulations also go to Hannah d.V and Jonathan P who have been selected in the Beecroft Zone Netball and Rugby Union teams respectively. There was a lot of tough competition at both these trials, as they are both very popular sports played in our local area. We wish both Hannah and Jonathan well as they represent BPS at the next level of competition. Looking ahead on the calendar, the K-6 Athletics Carnival is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 4 July at Greenway Oval Cherrybrook. There will be more information in the forthcoming Newsletters. Results for today’s Cross Country Carnival will be published in next week’s Newsletter. Jo Justic

Stage 2 Commonwealth Games Day

Last Wednesday Stage 2 participated in a mock Commonwealth Games on the Mary St Grass. Students represented various countries from the Commonwealth in a variety of activities and from the student discussion after the event, Tug-o-War and Newcombe Ball were the favourites of the day! The Opening and Closing Ceremonies were a grand sight from the flags made by the students to the Queen’s Baton Relay. The overall winning country on the day was the team from Kenya! A very big thank you to the mums who came along to cut up the oranges and Zooper Doopers for the children. We are very appreciative of the time that you were able to give the children! In addition to this, another very big thank you to Janet and the team at Woolworths Beecroft who supplied the oranges and ice blocks for free!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone! Below are a few photos from the day.

Peer Support

Week 1 Our whole school will be starting Peer Support sessions this week. The children will be participating in a new module, Moving Forward which focuses on resilience. The experiences in the module help children to identify their qualities and strengths, develop skills, respond with a range of strategies and seek support when faced with challenges.

Page 6: BEECROFT SCHOOL NEWSLETTER€¦ · Website: Email: beecroft-p.school@ ... of competition was very high and it was a nerve-wracking wait for the Sydney North Team to be announced.

6

In this session, the children will establish connections with the other members of their group and develop their group agreement to enable them to work well together. The children will discuss an example of a challenging situation and some resilient and non-resilient responses. You might like to discuss with your child what they can do to help them take an active role in Peer Support. Barbara Johnson

Bags of Veggies

So many veggies to harvest after the school break. 10 bags of produce were harvested, weighed, bagged and sold to parents at

Friday pick up. Lucas had so many bags to sell that he missed his bus. Love the commitment. The $20 raised goes back into buying

more seedlings for the garden.

We have a new Asian mix of veggies in the heritage garden that we will be harvesting this week, as well as our normal beautiful range

of silver beet, rocket, lemon grass, rhubarb, beans, lettuce and sorrel.

Message from the President

Congratulations to all the runners in today’s Cross Country event, and thank you to Kristy S, Fiona, Kristy B, Fiona H, Lyndal VH, Steven L, Damien N, Natalie T, Kylie HC for volunteering some time to run it and Louise de Vos and Bel Vandell for organising the pop up Kiosk.

Page 7: BEECROFT SCHOOL NEWSLETTER€¦ · Website: Email: beecroft-p.school@ ... of competition was very high and it was a nerve-wracking wait for the Sydney North Team to be announced.

7

Thanks very much also to everyone who sent a plate along as well. This may seem like a small thing, but being able to run the kiosk at Cross Country is a very big deal this year. As recently as two years ago, we didn’t have enough volunteers to allow the canteen to actually run a kiosk at either the Sports Carnival or Cross Country! With our fantastic parent body and their amazing community spirit, this is now made possible! This Thursday is also the Mother’s Day stall. Mel Hogan is looking for a few extra volunteers on the day to person up the stall on the day from 9:15a.m. Mel can be contacted at: [email protected]. Gifts will be available for a flat $5 and there promises to be a wide selection on offer thanks to all the recycled gifts and generous donations from Bunnings Carlingford, Woolworths Beecroft, Chemist Warehouse Epping, Chi Bath Products, In-home Property Management, Sydney Packaging-Rosemary Groenestyn Rodan & Fields- Angela Kwong. We hope that there is something to appeal to everyone. Cross Country Carnival – SOLD OUT! What a beautiful day we had and such great sportsmanship. Well done to all the participants at today’s Cross Country Carnival. Our kiosk, as always was very popular, for snacks and treats. This would not have at all been possible with the generous help of the ladies on the social committee. In particular, a big thank you goes to Louise de Vos and Caroline Choong for organising the great team of volunteers and bakers for the occasion! Thank you to Belinda P, Kylie H-C, Donna D, Kristy S, Virginia C, Lyndal vH, S Christensen, R Tamsett, Natalie T, E Oglivie, Carlie B, Barbara B, Lisa Y, R Kandola, Kristen P for their wonderful baked goods donated to the stall. Welcome back to Term 2. As always, a new term brings new reward items, and the Sparkle Glitter Pens and Glow Light are proving to be very popular already. If you are in years 3-6 you will receive notification once you have collected 9 tokens. Then you can order your prize the next time you bank. If you are in K-2 you should still be collecting the plastic tokens. You can always ask at the banking window for a token count check, or drop me an email below. BOOSH

Hello Booshies!!! What a great first week we had! All our Kindies are now blending in with the rest of our Boosh family, no longer wearing their kindy vests but still being supported in their transitions to and from school and between activities. The children really enjoyed wellbeing week and there are activities such as Kids Yoga that we will be including in the program again. It’s great seeing the kids taking activities introduced by staff and then running groups by themselves! MOTHER’S DAY BREAKFAST This Friday from 7:00a.m. will be our annual Mother’s Day Breakfast. Mums, Dads or in fact whoever signs in our Booshies to Boosh are invited to join us for some breakfast goodie. Children will be able to sit and eat with their family members or we will have takeaway food and coffee/tea available for those parents who need to rush off. UPCOMING SUSTAINABILITY WEEK Did you know Boosh now has a soft plastics bin? We are now able to collect all soft plastics used at the centre which we then bring to Woolworths at Beecroft for them to recycle. Next week at Boosh will be sustainability week. Keep an eye out at Boosh and in next week’s newsletter for our Boosh Sustainability challenge! AFTERNOON TEA SPECIAL No afternoon tea specials this week as we will be providing a special breakfast on Friday for families and kids instead! Have a great week! UPCOMING DATES: Mother’s Day Breakfast – Friday 11 May from 7:00a.m. in Boosh. Parent Committee Meeting – Tuesday 5 June at 7:00p.m. in BOOSH. Mel and The Boosh Team 9980 8224 [email protected]
