Principal’s Report We are now into Week 3 of the new school year – for many parents and students it might not seem that long ago that students joined us for 2017. We have welcomed a new group of very eager, and confident, Year 7 students and we trust they have enjoyed new experiences of earlier starts, different travel itineraries and getting to know students from across the valley.
In a recent article by Geoff Masters, Chief Executive of the Australian Council for Educational Research, he noted that “Good measures of progress in improving outcomes and closing gaps are essential. However, success may best be achieved not by pursuing it directly, but as a ‘side-effect’ of an unwavering dedication to the larger educational purpose.”
Exemplifying this point are the new teachers and support staff that have joined Bega High School in 2017. They have been added to an already experienced, skilful group of professionals who will go above and beyond with the best learning and social outcomes for students as their goal.
Careers Adviser – until a new teacher is appointed students (and parents) can refer to Charmaine Lucas as the relieving Careers Adviser.
HSIE – Alana Coates returns to job-share with Denise Perry; Peta Relton has returned and has been joined by William Carney, as replacements for teachers on long-term leave.
Mathematics – Hannah Shaw and Brendon Richards have temporary engagements for 2017; both have been at Bega High school in recent years.
PDHPE – the relieving Head Teacher for 2017 is Brooke Morgan and Carly Bexterman is teaching in the faculty during 2017.
Science – Kathleen Platts joins us from her most recent engagement at Bombala High School.
Special Education – permanent appointments in this faculty are Clair Hopkins and Michael Bulters; Ron Harris, Matt Alterator and Carol Holden are also teaching in this faculty.
Technology – Industrial Arts – Matthew Collins has been permanently appointed to replace Greg Hain, and Brendon Richards is replacing Mr Collins (senior) during 2017.
Visual Arts – Breony Delforce has joined the school in replacing Pip Cullen, and Chris Blewett is currently replacing Helen Neeson.
More details about staff roles and personnel are available on the Sentral Parent Portal and the school’s website. We have encouraged all students to organise themselves with a diary or a phone app and the school has also made a planner that you can access for your family through the Sentral Parent Portal.
Thursday 16th February is fast approaching – parents and carers of Year 7 and year 11 students be on the lookout for details of an informal review and introductions get together in the evening. We look forward to giving you information and time to catch up with your children’s teachers.
Mrs Linda Thurston Principal
