NASA ExperimentResults

Hans Kruse, principal investigator, andDon Flournoy (T-Com professor andproject manager) released the final reportin February on a joint project betweenOhio University, Huntington Bank, andNASA Lewis Research Center to provide asatellite-based data backup system for useduring a disaster.

Testing began in 1994, three monthsafter the Advanced CommunicationsTechnology Satellite (ACTS) wasdeployed from the space shuttle Discovery.Experiments were conducted to determineif the satellite could be used during adisaster to transmit financial data ratherthan terrestrial T-1 lines.

Analysis of the tests, which were doneover a 20-week period, showed that theproject was a success, and that satellitetransmission has tremendous potential forfuture banking applications.

A paper Hans and Don wrote on theACTS Satellite appeared in the 1996Annual Review of Communications.
