The Church in Wales is seeking to come to a common mind on the possible provision,

or not, of Same-sex marriage in our churches. At the moment this is not permitted,

and neither is the blessing of same-sex partnerships. Should the current

understanding we have of marriage remain the same, or might it be changed?

Three gatherings to wrestle with this across our diocese will be convened in early

June, with the nearest one to us being on Wednesday, 3rd. June at 7.00pm in All

Saints, Newtown. At our PCC meeting last Monday evening, those present wanted us

to host an open meeting prior to the one in Newtown, for all who might wish to

explore this issue further. This will be in the Old School on Tuesday, 26th. May at

7.00pm. You will be warmly welcomed.

Thank you for continuing to donate to our Food Bank box, the contents of which are regularly taken to the Welshpool Food Bank.

  • ST JOHN’S MISSION CHURCH, FRON

It was a beautiful Spring day for our joyous Easter Family Communion Service led by Ven Peter. The church had been beautifully decorated by Sandra and Lawrence and with the combination of the birds singing outdoors in the sunshine and the lovely flowers outside and inside it made for a lovely start to our Easter thanks and praise. It was a pleasure to welcome Joyce Brown to our congregation for her first visit, which we hope will be the first of many! At our service the prayers were read by Louise, Millie-Grace, Claire and Helen; Millie-Grace, Finlay and James with help from Vicar Peter performed a short dance, and then sang a song they had learned at Little Saints! The young people including Louise then led the singing of ‘What a wonderful Saviour is Jesus’ with a lusty rendition of the refrain of ‘Sing Hosanna to the King’. At the end of the service the Teen Seekers Easter Eggs were gathered by James and then all the members of the congregation were given chocolate Easter Eggs, the gift of Mrs. Betty Watkin, whom we thank for her generosity. Berriew young folks.

Our two young folks groups at St Beuno’s, continue to thrive. On Good Friday some 30 youngsters

gathered to observe and celebrate the Easter Festival. There were craft activities and ‘eats’ to

remind them of the Easter story which ended in church with a short act of worship and then an egg

    hunt.

On Easter day many little plastic eggs were returned to church filled with coins; the result of which

    - to date - we have raised £145.00. This is part of an on-going challenge to our older group the Teen

Seekers - who are raising funds throughout this year for their two selected charities - Cancer

Research and Children’s Liver Foundation. Teen Seekers continue to meet on the last Sunday of

each month - 4.45 until 6.15pm in the Old School. [Year 6 and older, young folks]

Little saints will have their next meeting on 16th

May in the Old School - 10.00 until 12.15pm -

when we shall be ‘fired-up’ in readiness for the festival of Pentecost or Whitsun. [Primary aged

    youngsters]

    St Beuno’s Choir

The choir enjoyed singing over Easter - we had practised two suitable anthems over the weeks prior,

and in the event we couldn’t decide which to sing - so both were sung! A third piece is now on its

way to be sung over Ascensiontide. Two of our member will shortly join the 80+ singers. Singing

    keeps you young!!!

We invite folks to consider joining us - there is a great spirit of fun and friendship - we finish

practices with a sit down and chat over a cup of tea! Our youngest is in their teens - and as you have

read - we will shortly have three in their 80’s - age is no barrier - Give it a try!!

  • Berriew W.I. April Meeting.

We returned to the Community Centre for our April meeting where we were

welcomed by Sue Usmar the President. At a short business meeting entries for the

forthcoming Spring Show were discussed and everyone seemed ‘on task’ The W.I.

have been asked to provide cakes for the newsletter fund rising event and for

volunteers to help man the stall.

The W.I. quiz team, Jill Sadler, Sue Usmar, Catriona Herreman and Sue Minikin were

congratulated for their success in coming third and only being two points behind the

    winners.

The speaker for the evening was Pam Watkins, assisted by her husband Ken. She told

the tale of their lives in a gipsy caravan from finding the caravan, restoring it and

travelling around the country in all weathers. We had a wonderful insight into life

with a horse drawn caravan, doing casual work and meeting many interesting kind

people on their travels. Their son coped very well and eventually had his own caravan.

It was a fascinating life style but not one for the faint hearted who like their home

comforts. Everyone enjoyed listening to their experiences and asked quite a lot of

    interesting questions

Ann Dixon and Ann Markwick served refreshments. The competition for a posy of

spring flowers was judged by the speaker and the winner was Ann Markwick with

Lesley Ellis second and Sue Minikin third.

Next month, Wednesday 6th May, we have a speaker from the Welshpool museum

talking about Laura Ashley and the competition that evening is a quiz on Welsh Icons.

That meeting is the usual time of 7: 15 p.m. in the Community Centre. In June we have

a garden outing to Cwn Weg garden in Dolfor with a meal afterwards.

You would be very welcome to join us –Do come along!

Monkey Path Debate Chapter Four It seems the ladies are ganging up on me, so I am going to give up, not in defeat but with a

    new solution.

Emilia is probably right, there were two Monkey Paths, one for the CIL ROAD children and

one for the BERRIEW ROAD children. Neither my friend Eric or I ever heard of a Cil Road

    path.

So, Rena, Emilia and Margherita we will have to meet at the Lychgate Tea Room some time

in May and have a discussion and come to some sort of a truce. I don't want this to drag on

and fill the Newsletter each month. Coffee will be at intervals.

Thank you also to Henry for clarifying the crash time, I thought it was probably the

summertime clocks. I had two telephone calls regarding the crash, so these people read the

Newsletter and will know the solution. Thank you.

    Wyndham Evans 01686 624084.

    ************************************

When I read the letter about the Monkey Path it reminded me of the path going from the

Elm's Orchard almost to “Rowley's Turn”. We used to walk from the village to the then

Council School. We called it the double hedge because it was up the bank between two

hedges. A low hedge on the roadside and a taller one above, bordering the village football

field on which Glan- yr- Afon estate now stands. It was often a “safe haven” when we were

chased by a nasty boy who went to the other school on horseback. Happy days!!!

    more than £20,000!!

The Marie Curie fundraising group formed 4 years ago, with local business woman

Kaye Derwas heading a small team of volunteers. Kaye became involved in

fundraising for Marie Curie after experiencing the Nursing Service first hand when

her mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Kaye said “ I have supported Marie Curie for the last 4 years because of the care we

received as a family when my Mum was ill. The Marie Curie nurses did an amazing

job, they treated my Mum with respect and dignity and helped us so that she could be

at home at the end which is where we wanted her to be”.

Although a cause that will always be close to her heart, Kaye has decided this will be

her final year, and plans to step down from the group after this year's Annual General

Meeting ( which will take place on Thursday 4th

June at 7pm. in Bistro 7, Hall Street,

Welshpool). Here the group will celebrate the success of the past 12 months, and give

special thanks to Kaye for her outstanding contribution over the last 4 years. The

group has raised in excess of £165,000 during this time.

Community fundraiser for Marie Curie, Victoria said “ although saddened at the news

that Kaye is stepping down, I am also very grateful for all she has done for Marie

Curie, and I fully intend to ensure the Welshpool group continue to fundraise locally

in the same way they have been doing, to raise money that will be used to support the

local Nursing Service. We will of course be looking for a new Chairperson, so I

would like to appeal to readers who may be interested in supporting our charity in

this way, to contact me on 01745 352910 or 07720 949 007, or email:

Marie Curie is a leading charity for people with any terminal illness. The charity

helps people living with a terminal illness and their families make the most of the

time they have together by delivering expert hands-on care, emotional support,

    research and guidance.

The Marie Curie Nurses work throughout Powys area, visiting patients and working

throughout the night in the comfort of the patients own home. The care they provide

is one to one, and this is always delivered free of charge to the patient and their

    family.

The Welshpool Fundraising Group volunteer locally by holding 'Great Daffodil

Appeal' collections, 'Blooming Great Tea Parties' and by encouraging members of the

public to fundraise on behalf of the charity. All money raised locally is spent locally.

  • The Tom Cat Spot

May has arrived and so have the swallows. It is a great month with late daffodils,

narcissus, tulips and many Spring flowers. This year we have the General Election to

contend with. Good luck to all candidates.

The Boy Racers were David “Bacco” Rowlands, Michael “Spud” Lewis, Gareth

“Ched” Davies and Roy “The Boy” Williams. I tried one of Spud's creations once and

    ended up in the river!

It's the Centenary of Berriew Primary School this year and I hope they have a good

one. My father told me how they used to trek across from the Church School for their

“school dinner” then trek back. I was lucky enough to go to both schools and whilst I

remember the Primary School well, also have some memories of the Infants School.

Does anyone remember the freezing cold outside boys toilets, the conker tree by the

main playground, Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Davies, the school cooks with their bread and

butter pudding, the large red wooden bricks we used to slide along the corridor at

speed until we were caught by the Head Mistress. We were then told off by her in that

stern voice with a hint of South Wales! Can you remember her name though as she

    was Head in the 1960's.

Until next month. Keep smiling. Tom Cat.
