ASK THE RABBII have a hard time reading the shema in hebrew. Even when I do it (very slowly), I don't

understand most of the words. May I say the shema in English?

What a coincidence! This question was talked about in Thursday's daf (the day I happened to be working on this Ask The Rabbi!). The gemara (Brachot 13a) quotes a debate between Rebbe and Chachamim (sages). Rebbe believes that shema mist be said in hebrew based on a verse that teaches us that it must be read as it appears in the Torah. The Chachamim say it can be said in anyone language based on the word "shema" which means it can be said in any language one understands. The Rambam rules that like Chachamim that it may be said in any language but says we should be careful with the translation. The Raavad does not agree with Rambam's concern about translation because he says every language is essentially an interpretation and the rabbis still permitted using other languages.

The Mishna Berura (62:3) rules that while according to the halacha, one may do shema in any language, as a practical matter, it is not suggested because there are so many words from the shema that cannot be accurately translated.

If one cannot read hebrew at all, they can definitely say shema in English and fulfill their obligation. If they can read hebrew but don't understand it, I would suggest reading it in English before to have a general sense of its meaning, and then read it in hebrew even if some or even most words are not understood.
