Based on their recommendations, we installed high-quality security cameras both inside and outside of the Temple. ey can be monitored by the security committee remotely or in the Temple office. An access control system was installed on all Temple doors. It allows them to remain locked at all times unless specifically programmed to be open for an event. A new alarm system has been installed throughout the building, as well, and numerous panic buttons were installed in critical locations. Recently, the leadership implemented a program to keep the doors locked at all times. Each member family will be issued a key fob that will be used to open the building. If you have not done so, you should contact the office to obtain a fob. You may purchase a second one for additional family members. e cost is $20 per fob. During the High Holy Days, armed security officers will be stationed throughout the building. As in prior years, these officers will check admission tickets and take names of people who try to enter the Temple without a ticket. Message From the RabbiReflecting at Tisha B’Av Helps to Prepare for New Year

A few weeks ago, we commemorated the day of Tisha B’Av – the 9th day of the Hebrew month of Av. This day initially was to understand the gravity of the sin of not having faith in G-d and putting our trust in humans, which resulted in the biblical Jews incurring a 40-year delay for entering the Promised Land – Israel. Over the centuries since that dark day, Tisha B’Av has come to stand as a commemoration for all of the tragedies that have befallen our people. Too numerous to mention – most of the terrible things (Spanish Inquisition, Chmielnick Massacre, Holocaust, to mention just a few) are, in some way, connected to this day. We fast, we mourn, and we reflect on Tisha B’Av in order to awaken us – jolt us – back to living as G-d wants us to. The reflecting that we do on Tisha B’Av, by reading the Kinnot and crying for our losses, could turn Tisha B’Av into a celebration instead of a day of mourning. It could turn Tisha B’Av into the anniversary of our new beginning – a new awakening to the clearer vision toward a more spiritual existence.
On Tisha B’Av we have a tradition of not wearing Tefillin to the Shacharit service (in the morning). Instead, we wear them to the Mincha (afternoon) service. This is out of realizing that on the morning of the 9th of Av our Holy Temple in Jerusalem was still burning. Hence, the afternoon service has a great importance and we do wear our Tefillin. It is the one time during the year that we traditionally wear Tefillin at Mincha. Please, we should take care not to miss this once-a-year Mitzvah. We are egalitarian. Men and women should attend – put on Tefillin and maybe we can achieve a higher level of Dvaykos (closeness to G-d) leading up to Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.

As I begin my administration, I want to thank those who serve as officers and trustees. I highly treasure their counsel and contributions. I would especially like to thank Larry Mack for his tenure as President. His dedication to our community is truly valued, and his work makes Congregation B’nai Sholom – Beth David a great place to be a part of.Congratulations to our two new Vice Presidents, Samantha Berman-Melendez and Jonathan Winderman. They will be serving alongside returning Vice Presidents Jeff Goodstein and Nancy Hochhauser. Their work is vital to the continuity of the Shul’s operations. Thank you, also, to our Treasurer, Mark Zeloof, for his continuing and tireless work on our financial health. The outgoing Board, led by Chairman Jack B. Friedman, gets a big Yasher Koach for their work throughout the year. Also, mazel tov to Alyce Goodstein and Ethel Oppenheimer, the new Co-Presidents of our Sisterhood. Great things will continue under their leadership, as it did under outgoing President Caryn Morgenbesser. While everyone was enjoying the beach, vacations and other warm weather summer activities, our clergy, officers, trustees, auxiliaries and committees were busy planning for the New Year: From our monthly Sunday morning programs to classes with the Rabbi, Sisterhood activities, the Jewish Learning Center, Friday night musical Shabbats and, most important, the High Holy Days. The Ritual Committee is working to make sure the High Holy Days go smoothly as always. Our Kol Nidre Committee is about to begin making calls and sending emails. Please be as generous as you can to help our Synagogue’s most important fundraiser. This annual appeal is essential to maintaining the Synagogue’s everyday operations. We look forward to our Sisterhood’s many continuing and new programs in the coming months. Our Fundraising Committee is planning fun programs that we can enjoy together as a Temple family. Our Communications Committee’s top priority is keeping our community informed about all our activities through ongoing updates to our website, email and other channels. JLC Curriculum Strengthens Hebrew Skills By Principal Dan Seid
This September and October symbolize a restart and refreshing of the Jewish Learning Center at Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David. The staff and I have been developing new curriculum models and resources to utilize during the fall 2019 semester. Students will be coming back to a JLC that has the same warm feeling but with increased expectations. We are looking to advance students’ ability to understand and read Hebrew. JLC faculty went through a rigorous professional development session July 25 and trained to use best practices and research models for their Hebrew instruction. Teachers are also trained to use decoding and encoding strategies and whole word and sight word strategies for reading instruction and mastery in students. The JLC is also introducing a new member to the CBS-BD community, our Israeli Shin-Shins. We have entered into an agreement with the Israeli Shin-Shin program, which allows us to “adopt” an Israeli 18 or 19-year old for the year. This person stays with community members and joins our Hebrew School on Sundays and Wednesdays. In addition, he or she will participate in community events, such as Sisterhood functions. We will be receiving one or two Israeli 18-year-old teens who have deferred their military service for a year to volunteer and teach in Long Island religious schools and Jewish Community Centers. We are lucky to become a part of this program for the 2019-2020 school year and hope the relationship will be beneficial. This opportunity allows our students to create a bridge and connection between American Jewish life and Israeli culture through direct personal relationships formed between our Shin-Shins and our students and community members. You can meet our new Shin-Shin on the second day of Rosh Hashana, when we will have a family service from 10:30AM to noon. Principal Dan and others will lead this service and welcome our new Shin-Shin, who will have an active role in this service and share their favorite High Holy Day experiences from Eretz Yisrael.

The Gural JCC’s new Social Services Hub, at 207 Grove Ave., Cedarhurst, provides nutritional support, basic necessities, guidance and encouragement to individuals and families facing hardships. Ray Musiker – A Legend and a Treasure By Barbara Kaplan (with an assist from the Musikers)
Last year when our Shul celebrated the repair of one of our Torahs, Ray Musiker and his son Lee, long-time Temple members, joined with Cantor Mendelson to provide the entertainment at the Siyum celebration. Ray, a celebrated Klezmer clarinetist, played and Lee, a renowned pianist, conductor, arranger and music director, accompanied our Cantor who provided the vocals. For those who were present, it was a musical treat. When Ray mentioned one Shabbat that he had written new music for liturgical prayers and that the Cantor was going to record it, my ears perked up. A few weeks later after Shabbat services, I told Lee that what he was doing, producing a documentary and podcast entitled “Ray Musiker: Generations-A Living Musical Legacy Birthday Project” to mark his father’s 93rd birthday (August 1), was a wonderful gift to his dad and a mitzvah.
“I would like to write an article for Chai Lights,” I said. My request resulted in an invitation to attend both recording sessions in Ray’s living room! I witnessed an extraordinary two-day event, planned and orchestrated by a loving son for his father. On July 29, with Lee providing the piano accompaniment, Cantor Dan recorded Ray’s newly written vocal/cantorial pieces set to prayers: L’Dor Va’Dor, Hashkiveinu, Elohai N’tzor, and L’Cha Dodi. The Cantor took Ray’s music, written for his extraordinary range, and infused it with pulsating life. Michael Winograd, a former pupil of Ray’s and an acclaimed clarinetist/composer, was in charge of recording and filming the two-day event for a documentary. On Wednesday, July 31, Ray, on clarinet, with Lee on piano, recorded five compositions. One was written by Ray’s late older brother, Sam, a world-renowned Klezmer/Jazz clarinetist; the others were penned by Ray. The father/son duo jammed and vibrated the house and everything and everyone in it. Then, Dan Blacksberg, an accomplished trombonist and broadcast journalist who produces the podcast “Radiant Others,” interviewed Ray for several hours of free associations and remembrances for his next podcast. (When the podcast, documentary and recordings are released, an announcement will go out to our Shul community.) By all accounts, Ray has lived an extraordinary life and is truly a living legend. He has worked to preserve Klezmer, the music developed and performed by Jewish musicians in Eastern Europe. He learned the music by osmosis, as it was in the air in Brooklyn, and from his father and brother. Early on, Ray decided to become an educator, teaching high school instrumental music. Ray has produced, arranged and performed on numerous Klezmer recordings and with storied bands and performers. During the two days I shared with Ray, Lee and daughters Debbie and Laurie, emotions rocketed from eager anticipation to exhilaration and deep satisfaction for a job well done. What is the College Commission and What Does it Do? Barry Goldberg, chair of the College Commission
High school graduation is an exciting point in one’s life. Many children from our Congregation head off to college. Some join the military. Most of them are away from home for extended periods for the first times in their lives. The Congregation wants to help these children stay connected with their Jewish heritage. The College Commission, in concert with our Sisterhood, reaches out to these children over the course of the year. It sends Chanukah and Purim packages to the children along with greetings from Rabbi Diamond. The College Commission also sends out articles and helps them identify Jewish community resources on various campuses. So what can you do? As a parent: Discuss with your child the Jewish resources available on campus. Visit the Hillel, Meor and Chabad representatives during campus tours. Update the College Commission with your child’s mailing address. As a congregant: Join the College Commission. Volunteer to help the Sisterhood sub-committee by contacting Nanci Moskowitz.
The Sunday Breakfast Series Returns By Sheldon Grossman
After a successful spring start, the Sunday Breakfast Series will return this fall with new programs of interest, covering the gamut of political, religious and secular topics. How nice it was to get together as a Congregation on a Sunday morning for a nice breakfast of bagels, egg and tuna salad, coffee and juice! We enjoyed presentations by: Jay Grossman on today’s restaurant experience; Rabbi Mark Greenspan on the Haggadah and Conservative Judaism, and State Sen. Todd Kaminsky, who discussed politics affecting the South Shore. The Breakfast Committee is already hard at work, planning programs for your enjoyment. Watch for Temple notifications announcing the dates and subject matter. The bagels will be fresh, the coffee will be hot and your continued support will be appreciated.
We are women of all ages, in all stages of life, who come together to make meaningful new friendships in a relaxed social environment. From a combination of our membership dues and our main fundraising events including New Year’s Greetings, Purim Bags, and sales from our Judaica Shop, we are able to hold fun and meaningful programs and contribute to our Synagogue’s wish list.

2019-20 dues are just $40. Sisterhood also provides funding for Jewish Learning Center programs, gifts for students who become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Mitzvah Meals for Congregants with serious illness or bereavement, and packages sent out by the College Commission to our students. We also support the Jewish Theological Seminary through Torah Fund. We financially support the maintenance of our cardiac defibrillator and oxygen tank. We also provide financial support for Chai Lights, our Synagogue newsletter.
Whether you come to meetings, attend programs, help us organize or plan events/fundraisers, or just pay your dues, YOU are choosing to support Sisterhood and all we do. You do not need to be a Temple Member to join. Your level of participation is up to you, but please remember that a dynamic, warm and welcoming group of women await you. 350 Years of American Jewish History at Philadelphia Museum By Ellis and Tracey Simon
If you thought your grandparents or great grandparents were among the first Jews in the United States, think again. Across the street from the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia you can find 350 years of American Jewish history within one building, the National Museum of American Jewish History. The museum tells the story of the American Jewish experience. It is a story of hope, perseverance and achievement in a country that afforded Jews something they rarely had in the Old World: religious freedom. On the building’s west side, George Washington’s message to the congregation of Touro Synagogue, “Happily, the government of the United States gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance,” sets the tone.
The exhibits are grouped by time period on three floors: Foundations of Freedom, 1654 – 1880; Dreams of Freedom, 1880 – 1945; and Choices and Challenges of Freedom, 1945 – today. You can learn how Jews established a toehold in the New World in New York City and other coastal communities and moved west as the country expanded. You can see how waves of later Jewish immigrants adapted to their new home and achieved success in entertainment, business and the professions. You also can discover how migration to the suburbs changed Jewish life and how the newly established State of Israel affected the world and how we see ourselves as Jews. The Only in America® Gallery/Hall of Fame, located on the first floor, tells the stories of 18 prominent Jewish Americans, including Sandy Koufax, who lived briefly in Rockville Centre, Golda Meir and Jonas Salk, and the challenges and choices they faced. We were so engrossed by the exhibits, we didn’t realize we had stayed until closing time. Keep the museum in mind for a great day trip or as part of a mini vacation.
After World War II, many Jews flocked to suburbia, where new homes with “modern” kitchens awaited them.
