On Rosh Hashanah even the most assimilated Jew who attends services cannot help be moved by the cry of the Shofar, the sound and spirit of which carries our hopes and aspirations to G-d’s ear.
There are three distinct sounds of the Shofar:
• Tekiah – Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the New Year (5778). We use this day to proclaim and internalize the understanding that G-d is ALL…The Creator, The Sustainer, The King. •Shevarim – When we ponder this past year, we know deep down inside that we did not function at or even near our potential. The three blasts of the Shofar symbolize our crying heart…which only wants us to strive for a closer relationship with G-d...accomplished by successfully executing the Mitzvots with sincerity. •Teruah – On Rosh Hashanah we need to wake up and take an “honest” look at what we are. Nine blasts on a Shofar are like a wake-up call to rouse us into “honesty.”
I wish everyone a Happy, Peaceful, Healthy and Prosperous New Year. May we all forgive and be forgiven.

President’s MessageBy Larry Mack
I am happy to say that we are off to a wonderful start, following the installation of the officers on June first. In addition to the Executive Committee, composed of the Board Officers, I have created the President’s Advisory Committee. This advisory committee to the President, which consists of Nanci Moskowitz, Marty Greenberg, Ira Salwen and Mark Skolnick, will be aiding me in all evaluation and decision-making issues. Both committees meet during each month to address Shul concerns on a regular basis. A number of issues have been addressed already and more are in the works: several structural issues involving the roof are in process. We are well into preparation for the High Holy Days, with the Kol Nidre campaign having been brought to the forefront (you have all received your annual Kol Nidre Pledge forms some time ago). Torah Scrolls have been repaired, appraised and photographed, and documentation made of Temple assets for insurance purposes. Our Casino Fundraiser in September is set to take off as well. Many thanks to multiple participants in the Shul are in order, and I can’t even list them all here. Everyone with whom I have worked has simply been wonderful and the commitments to our Temple community have been so heartwarming. I am very proud to say that we all seem to be coming together in this new year, and attendance is up at all Temple events. Recent fundraising in conjunction with other community organizations has been very well attended and enjoyed by all; regular scheduled services and all Yahrzeit services have had minyanim over recent months; and Rabbi Diamond has done a wonderful job during his weekly Sabbath sermon applying each weekly Torah parsha to our daily lives. Despite the typical quiet summer we have all been very busy with our Shul, helping to lay the ground work for the upcoming year. Please accept my warmest best wishes on the upcoming holidays. Lisa and I wish all of you a Healthy and Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you in Shul.
Box Tops are Back!By Dan Seid, JLC Principal
The Jewish Learning Center is collecting Box Tops for Education at the drop-off in the main lobby of the synagogue. Box Tops are a crucial fundraising advantage for the Hebrew School and every Box Top Counts! So, every time you munch on your Cheerios or clean with Lysol products, or throw out garbage in a Hefty bag, be sure to save the Box Top for the JLC! For a list of products that contain box tops click here:http://www.boxtops4education.com/earn/participatingproducts Thank you to Amy Strauss for being our Box Top Coordinator and helping the Hebrew School in a tremendous financial way!
Security System Needs VolunteersBy Jeff Goodstein, House Committee
As most of you know, we have installed a state-of-the-art automated security system with cameras throughout the building, providing a live feed to a monitor in the office. An important part of the system is the auto lock/unlock feature programmed by computers in the office. As the doors are locked at all times to limit unauthorized access, programs need to be run to unlock and re-lock the doors at specific times to make the building accessible for various events and services. We are in need of volunteers to learn the security system and be available, from time to time, to program the system from the office to enable building access for members and guests. We also need
volunteers to serve on a committee to draft, enact and monitor a security plan for the synagogue. Our safety and the safety of the Temple’s treasures are at stake. Please help protect our congregation and our building. To volunteer and perform a mitzvah, email Jeff Goodstein at [email protected].
Sanctuary Seats on Sale Sanctuary seats are on sale. Large comfortable seats, all with great unobstructed views. ONLY $360.00, payable over three years. Includes your own brass nameplate. Pick your location now while still available. Please contact our Temple office at 516-764-4100 or Sy Entin at 516-780-5728.

The Jewish Learning Center Plans Exciting YearBy Dan Seid, Principal, and Alyse Goodstein, Board of Education
The JLC is back and booming for the fall of 2017! Principal Dan and the teachers have prepared a comprehensive, en-riching and exciting academic calendar filled with tremendous learning opportunities for both students and their families. We will kick off the family events with a Back-to-School Parent Open House on Sunday September 17. Some high-lights of this year’s schedule include a special joint program in October with Sisterhood where we will host the daughter of Holocaust survivors and hear about Jewish life and dance during and after the Holocaust. This engaging program will focus not on the tragedy of the Holocaust, but rather the lessons about life we have learned. Also planned is a fun and comprehensive Junior Congregation program led by Principal Dan designed to foster a knowledge of ritual and prayer for our youngsters, beginning with High Holy Day children’s services, babysitting and an interactive Kids Kol Nidre service on Yom Kippur evening. See JLC Calendar on the other side of this page. We have over 50 children enrolled for September, but, as always, if you know of a family looking for a synagogue and Hebrew School to call home, please refer them to Principal Dan at 516-286-8308 or [email protected].
The JLC has been busy, not just in terms of educating students with Judaic academics to get them ready for their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, but also in the Jewish tradition of Chessed and Tikkun Olam. The ladies in our 6th and 7th grade classes participated in a pilot program with the Jewish Education Program based on Long Island and were instructed in a Bat Mitzvah Project class. The students met for an hour and a half every Sunday morning and discussed Jewish Women’s issues in the 21st century. Classes were taught by volunteer teachers from the Jewish Education Program and resulted in their culmination project where our JLC ladies planned and implemented a carnival for students who have cancer. The Carnival took place at HAFTR Elementary School in Lawrence in May. Principal Dan, the students of the JLC and the JEP leaders enjoyed doing community service for the Bat Mitzvah Project program. This program will continue in September 2017 for upcoming Bat Mitzvot ladies.

Mah-Jongg Game Night Fundraiser a SuccessBy Alyse Goodstein
July 25th Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David held a joint fundraiser with Bethany House, a group of residential options for women and children struggling with homelessness on Long Island. A light Chinese style buffet, augmented with wine, was the prelude to a night of fun, laughter, raffles and lots of Mah-Jongg. About 70 people enjoyed the evening.

South Shore Chai Grads and Eagle Scouts By Barry Goldberg
On Monday, May 15th, South Shore Chai – the successor to the Hebrew High School – held its graduation ceremony at Beth Shalom Oceanside Jewish Center. Six graduates, their proud families, Rabbis Diamond and Greenspan, several well-wishers and B’nai Sholom-Beth David’s President Nanci Moskowitz were in attendance at this festive occasion. Three of the graduates are from Congregation B’nai Sholom Beth David (CBS-BD): Matthew Goldberg,William Kleyman and Zachary Weis-Damm. All three of these young men had their Bar Mitzvahs at CBS-BD and are graduates of the Jewish Learning Center. Especially noteworthy is that this is the largest contingent of CBS-BD graduates from the Hebrew High School in over a decade. Coincidentally, all three of these young men are Eagle Scouts and had their Eagle Scout Court of Honor on June 25th at Central Synagogue-Beth Emeth in Rockville Centre. (Matt Goldberg’s brother, Jason – also a graduate of the Hebrew High School and finishing his second year at Binghamton University-also had his Court of Honor the same day.) The South Shore Chai meets once a week at CBS-BD and the format this past year consisted of a team-taught class with Rabbis Diamond and Greenspan. The classes involve lively discussions of Jewish issues. This past year there was a five-session interactive role-playing section led by two expert facilitators from the ADL. They provided the students with skills needed to deal with anti-Semitic and BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement issues they could face in college. In addition to the discussion and debate, dinner was served and as Rabbi Greenspan noted at the graduation, that of all the Hebrew high schools in Nassau County, this one has the best food! Any Jewish youth between the age of 13 and 18 is welcome to join the South Shore Chai. There is no homework and the classes are not sequential, meaning you can join at any time. Please call Rabbi Diamond for more details.
South Shore Chai Grads from Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David (L-R): Matthew Goldberg, Rabbi Diamond, Zachary Weis-Damm, William Kleyman, Rabbi Greenspan.
Eagle Scout Court of Honor June 25, 2017 (L to R): Jason G. Goldberg, Laurence H. Plonsky, Charles J. Gillett, Scoutmaster James Plonsky, Michael R. Maher, Councilman Anthony D ’Esposito, Kenneth R. Kimmons, Matthew S. Goldberg and RVC Mayor Francis X. Murray. RVC Trustee Edward Oppenheimer is in the second row. Not shown are William Kleyman and Zachary Weis-Damm.

What Makes You Tick
Donations to Torah Fund enable us to support the men and women studying at the Jewish Theological Seminary as they educate our future leaders. A donation of $180.00 entitles you to a lovely pin which shows your support. For a small donation we have cards available for every occasion. What a great way to give to Torah Fund and share with loved ones and friends. We will be receiving the new pins prior to Rosh Hashanah. Contact us to reserve a pin, and to ask about donations, cards or any questions regarding Torah Fund. Thank you for your support! Sandy Friedman: [email protected] Connie Salwen: [email protected]
Sponsored by the Sisterhood, Nili Couzens (top) brought her motivational “What Makes You Tick?” presentation to Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David the evening of June 28th. Ms. Couzens energized and challenged the rapt audience to make changes based on three personality traits. A buffet dinner was served.

Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David wants to keep in touch with the children of our members who are attending college or who are serving in our armed services. Bob Seletsky, Judith Perlman, Barbara Barchat, Joe Cohn and Barry Goldberg are members of the College Commission. We need your help to reconfirm and to add new contact information for our Congregation’s young adults in college or in the military. During the school year, Sisterhood together with the College Commission, will send packages and updates to these young adults. Additionally, this listing will give Rabbi Diamond an opportunity to reach out and connect with our temple’s youth. Please take a few moments to complete the information below and send it to the office to the attention of the College Commission. Or fax it to the office at 516-678-3323 or send it by email to [email protected]. If you prefer email it to Barry Goldberg at [email protected]. Even if your child was on the list last year, please resubmit as we need to confirm the information. If you wish to join the College Commission or have ideas for programs, please feel free to speak with any of the members of the College Commission.
