Introduction

For this final project, we are to be grouped with 6 members. But for the task, its

divided into two, which are individual and group work. For individual work, I have

to do a report for my future city. My city is a ‘floating on water’ city. For group

work, we are going to build a model of our town which our tutor chose and do A2

presentation boards to explain about our city.

In my report, I have to find some information about cities which are, ancient or

old cities, present cities and future cities which are related to my city. Besides, I also

will be designing my own city and for my tutor to choose from the group’s every

member.

Lastly, the information I found are related to what kind of city I am building and

how the city is going to help in our future.

The City

1.City?

• A place where people live that is larger than a town

• Cities generally have complex systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage,

housing and transportations…

2.History

• Early humans led a nomadic existence, relying on hunting and gathering for

sustenance.

• Existence of a city has many reasons for it

• The complex functions that cities perform could be traced by the diversity of

urban forms

3. Cities are like this…

Buildings

Streets

Transportations on the highway

Park

Shops

School

Housing Area

Public Toilet

Hospital

4. A better town should be…

- Clean > for the people’s healthiness, clean air, and can help in saving the

environment

clean place

Less cars

- Good Facilities > for the usage of the people

More Public Transportations

Public Library for learning usage

- People’s safety > As today’s world is not really safe enough for our people

More Police

Put CCTV in traffic junction

- Good people > by having a better city, is to have good people in the city

5. Future city…

Future city… For me, to describe how a future city look like… Its just what

mentioned in “A better town should be…” which are a clean place for people to stay

in, good facilities for the people’s usage and giving a guarantee to our people’s

safety. It can also have something like the flying transportations, modern buildings,

and so forth.

Investigation & Data Collections 1

Ancient Cities

Cities that have been existed since before the time of legal memory. That looks

like…

Ostia Antica, The Province of Rome, Lazio, Italy

1.History - Is an ancient Roman ghost town

- It’s abandoned when the empire fell

- The ruins were plundered for their marble to

build the cathedrals in Pisa, Florence, and

Orvieto

- Found in the 4th century BC

- when the city reached its height of 60,000 inhabitants, most of the

building dates between the A.D.

2. I am concentrating in Ostia Antica, The Province of Rome, Lazio, Italy for their

organisation of the city

3. - Ostia Antica is a large archeological site, close to the modern town of Ostia

- It’s also the location of the harbour city of ancient Rome

- "mouth" is the meaning for "Ostia" in Latin

- Ostia was Rome's seaport located at the mouth of the River Tiber

- But, because of the silting and a drop in sea level, the site now lies 3 km from

the sea.

4. The site is noted for the excellent preservation of its ancient buildings, magnificent

frescoes and impressive mosaics

5. I am using the some elements from this city which is the things this city have such

as port, docks, warehouses, apartment flats, mansions, theater, baths, and shopping

arcades. But I will also add my own options too. As these are just some other

suggestions for my town.

Investigation & Data Collection 2

Present Cities

Is the city we are living in now. It looks like…

Venice, Italy

History - The history of Venice begins around 400 A.D.

- The first people to settle in the Venetian Lagoon

were frightened men coming from the nearby

Italian mainland

- came into existence at the 25th March, 421 A.D.

- large number of people decided to stay

permanently in the lagoon not until 450 A.D.

- For nearly 1400 years, the two or three miles of

shallow water separating

2. I am concentrating in a floating city which is located in

Venice, Italy

3. - Its important for their history, arts, and the uniqueness of the floating city

- Venice is built in a very special environment a lagoon

and emerging from the shallow waters

- They “built” the ground itself on which their palaces were erected, consolidating

the soft earth and defending it from it from the tides

- Since they did not have groundwater, they designed an efficient system to collect

fresh water he tides

- They created a functional sewer system

- The water that perpetually immerses the city puts its future at risk

- Knowing full well that the existence of the city

itself depends on the maintenance

- The canals, paving, embankments, bridges, underground utility grids, the

systems for the systems for channeling waste water are all the elements that ‘shape’

the city of Venice

4. As a result, this floating on water city is very unique, beautiful, and also

historically place both inside and outside

5. The elements that I am using is the support under the city of Venice

Future City

A city in the future generation.

Singapore

Singapore is a small country, located in the southern tip of Malaysia, but it’s

already a modern city-state.

For the densely populated island of Singapore, water supply and sanitation was a

problem to them. By challenging the elements for the people, singapore goes beyond

to provide the basics that is water supply.

While the negotiation between Singapore and Malaysia were ongoing, Singapore

already prepared for greater water self-sufficiency through an integrated water

management approach including desalination of seawater and water reuse. In 1998,

the government initiated a study, to determine if reclaimed water treated to potable

standards was a viable source of water. In 2002 Singapore commissioned its first

reclaimed water plant. There was also an active marketing campaign for the sale of

NEWater in bottles. In 2005 Singapore opened its first seawater desalination plant.

In Singapore, sanitation in this country is very strictly controled in order to keep

the environment clean. Besides, Singapore is a modern city, as everyone know that

many cities faces problem like traffic jam but still in Singapore, they use public

transportations more than driving cars in their daily life. This is due to Singapore

governments increased tax rate to decrease the usage of vehicles.

Though Singapore still uses imported water from Malaysia, Singapore still

classified as a potential to be a fine future city. For my future city proposal, I can use

Singapore’s water management system as a water supplier for my city, sanitation

controlling and provide more public transportations.

My City

My city is going to be placed on Indian Ocean, western of Australia.

My city’s name is Floater City.

For my city, I would like it to be more to a tourist destination. So, it will have more

attractions for a tourist destination.

To build my city, I used some elements from the information and ideas from my

researches.

As this is a floating city, so it must have supports to hold the whole city. Hence, I

did research for that in a city called Venice because Venice itself is a floating city. I

will be using this idea to support my city. This is how my supports for the city…

For my city’s organization, I used the idea from Ostia Antica, The Province of Rome,

Lazio, Italy because I can see that their zoning are organized.

HERE

This is how my city’s zoning is going to be organized…

The supports under my city…

This is how my city is going to look like… ( I think it’s understandable… )

For the commercial area, I will be putting water park, botanical garden,

skyscraper, shop lots and hotels.

These are built to let people a better place to experience, relax and having a

breathtaking view. Bus stops are provided for the people’s convenience, to

somewhere without paying too much money.

Water park

Botanical garden

Bus stops at the sides of the botanical garden

Skyscraper

Hotels

Shop Lots & Restaurants

Besides, for the public area, I will be putting police station, hospital, some shops,

restaurants and public transportations.

These are provided to protect the people’s safety, to help with the people’s medical

problem, to provide education and giving a place for the people to solve their

problems like paying tax, register for passport or identity card, register for new

shop, or so forth.

Police Station Some Water transportations

Shop Lots & Restaurants

Hospital

University

Schools

Government building

Bus Stops

Furthermore, for the housing area, I will be putting semi-D houses, apartments,

and terrace houses.

These houses are built to give people a place to protect them from bad weather and

a place to relax in.

Semi-D Houses Detached Houses

Apartments

Moreover, for the port, I will be putting some shops, restaurants and some water

transportations. These are provided for giving people the convenience to buy things,

and to go somewhere else easily.

Shop Lots & Restaurants

Water Transportations

In addition, for energy resources, I will be putting a hydropower plant. This is

provided for energy resources like water and electrical resources are needed for

people’s usage.

Hydropower Plant

Other than that, wifi can be connected everywhere inside the city.

WiFi Usage

Lastly, taxi boats will be provided in this city as almost all the roads are covered

with water. Also, people themselves can buy their own boat for their own convience.

Boats are convinient when it comes to a floating city because almost all roads are

covered with water.

Taxi Boat

Conclusion

For my Floating on Water ‘X’ City proposal of G.L. City, I believe that it will give

good sustainability for the people.

Cities are important for people. As this is a place for people to stay in. Cities start

from putting everything into place such as houses, shops, schools, attractive places

and so on. These things are included to construct a city, and for to sake of the

people. So, having a place like this, is very comfortable and convenient for the

people who live in.

From doing this report, I get to know many things about ancient cities, how a

future city going to be like, how to build a better city for the future, and many more.

I also learnt that how to build a CITY! =)=)=)…
