As always, we are continually looking at how we can ensure the British Hairdressing Awards remains at the forefront of the industry, and we have made a number of changes this year that I would like to bring to your attention. Entrants in all categories will need to submit a photograph of the finished image, before any postproduction work has been undertaken Two wigs can be used, and hairpieces/strands in a further two photographs, No more than four photographs can contain wigs, hairpieces and strands with the exception being Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year No wigs, hairpieces or strands can be used in the Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician or Men’s categories Images entered into the Avant Garde category cannot be entered into any other category The work in all categories, with the exception of Avant Garde needs to reflect aspirational, wearable hair Hall of Fame – once you have entered the Hall of Fame, you will now be allowed to reenter the category after a two year ‘rest’ period Newcomer – entry to this category is open to all hairdressers who have been running a regular client column for a maximum of two years Please take time to read through the form very carefully taking note of the specific requirements for each category you wish to enter.

April  2017    I  am  pleased  to  enclose  the  entry  pack  for  HJ’s  2017  British  Hairdressing  Awards,  sponsored  by  Schwarzkopf  Professional.      As  always,  we  are  continually  looking  at  how  we  can  ensure  the  British  Hairdressing  Awards  remains  at  the  forefront  of  the  industry,  and  we  have  made  a  number  of  changes  this  year  that  I  would  like  to  bring  to  your  attention.                  • Entrants  in  all  categories  will  need  to  submit  a  photograph  of  the

HANDY TIPS• Write your name, salon name and category on

to label/s BEFORE sticking to the back of your photographs. Each photograph must be labelled.

• Never write directly onto the back of your photographs.

• Always protect each individual photograph when packaging your entry and do not use paperclips as these can damage the photographs.

• Always use a hard backed envelope or box to send your entry.

• Do not leave postage or delivery until the last minute.

• Label the back of your photographs where wigs/hairpieces/strands have been used.

BRITISH HAIRDRESSING AWARDS 2017

• Finalists’ work in each category will be displayed in the British Hairdressing Awards Gallery at Salon International 2017, 14-16 October, ExCeL, London.

• Information regarding successful candidates or winners will not be given out over the phone.

• Details of successful entrants will be published in Hairdressers Journal International and on hji.co.uk. Award winners will be announced at the Awards ceremony on Monday 27 November 2017 at Grosvenor House, a JW Marriott Hotel, Park Lane, London.

• Entries in the Avant Garde category cannot submit the same images into any other category.

• Six finalists will be selected in each category with the exception of British Hairdresser of the Year.

• Winners recognised in the Hall of Fame can re-enter their chosen category after a two-year rest period.

• All work submitted for the British Hairdressing Awards must be solely the work of the entrant.

• Work submitted for British Hairdresser of the Year, must not have previously been published. Work submitted for all other categories may be published work.

• Hairdressers Journal International has the exclusive first option on all British images.

• Hairdressers Journal International retains exclusivity of the photographs submitted for the British category only until 31 January 2018.

• All work is accepted in good faith. Instant disqualification will apply to any candidates found abusing this.

• No more than four pictures can be used in two different categories (with the exception of Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year where the same eight images can be entered into a region).

• No employee of Hairdressers Journal International or Schwarzkopf Professional or their families will be allowed to enter or judge the British Hairdressing Awards.

• The judges decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into.

• Entries must be supplied with a ‘before’ picture of each model taken on the day of the shoot prior to any hair work, make-up or styling. (with the exception of Avant Garde as for this, you must supply an unretouched Polaroid of the final look before any computer enhancement). There is no set size for the before shots but they should be no larger than 10” deep x 8” wide. Failure to provide these may result in disqualification.

• If entering Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year, please refer to specific requirements found in the category criteria.

• Entries must be supplied with an “after” shot of each model before any post production/re-touching.

• Children under the age of 18 years by Monday 27 November 2017, are not permitted to attend the British Hairdressing Awards presentation evening at Grosvenor House, a JW Marriott Hotel.

FURTHER RULES AND REGULATIONS

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE JUDGING?• All photographs are judged anonymously - judges are unable to see the names or salon names of

the entrants.

• All photographs are displayed by category on boards as seen in a photographic gallery.

• Any judge who has an entrant in a category in their employment, or has given advice to any entrant in a category, is not allowed to judge that category.

• As each judge completes their judging form for one category, their form is handed to the independent auditors.

• Once marks are handed into the auditors they cannot be changed.

• Judges are not allowed to discuss any entries before, during or after the judging, with each signing a non-disclosure agreement.

• The whole procedure is supervised and strictly controlled.

WHAT HAPPENS FOLLOWING THE FIRST ROUND JUDGING?• All entrants will be informed in writing as to whether or not they have gained finalist status.

• Finalists will be asked to submit a further four photographs, making a collection of eight.

• Finalists will be asked to supply all eight images on disc. This disc must only contain the images submitted for entry.

• Second round closing date: 5pm, Friday 1 September 2017.

THE JUDGING

REGIONAL CATEGORIESWHO CAN ENTER?• All qualified hairdressers who work in the UK in a commercial environment and have done so for a minimum of three

years excluding training may enter this category.

• Entrants must have a regular client column within the region entered. A regular client column is working in a salon for a minimum of one day per week. This may be checked.

• Entries in the Avant Garde Category cannot enter the same images into any other categrory.

An individual can only enter from one salon in one region in any one year.

HOW TO ENTER• Submit four photographs created by you during the past 12 months (24 June 2016 - 23 June 2017).

• The overall size of each photograph must be 10” deep x 8” wide (portrait) unmounted. The size includes any borders. Photographs can be supplied on photographic paper purchased through a photographer or photographic outlet. Please do not use paper clips when submitting your entry as this can damage the photographs.

• Entries must be supplied with a ‘before’ picture of each model taken on the day of the shoot prior to any hair work, make-up or styling. There is no set size for the before shots but they should be no larger than 10” deep x 8” wide. Failure to provide these may result in disqualification.

• Entries must be supplied with an “after” shot of each model before any post-production/retouching.

• The organisers and judges reserve the right to question any photographs which appear to be computer enhanced.

• Should you go through to the second round, you will need to supply a further four photographs, with ‘before’ and 'after' shots. These will create a collection of eight photographs.

• Photographs may be black and white or colour and the hair should be aspirational, wearable and reflect current trends.

THE PHOTOGRAPHIC SHOOT• No more than four pictures in the collection of eight can contain wigs/extensions/hairpieces or stands.

You can use a maximum of two wigs in total, in a maximum of two pictures.

A further two pictures can include extensions, hairpieces and/or strands.

Please bear in mind that should you get through to the second round you will be asked to supply a further four photographs. You will need to ensure that you have only used a maximum of two wigs in a total of two pictures and extensions, hairpieces and/or strands in two additional pictures in the overall collection of eight photographs.

• Each member of the team must be a qualified hairdresser and all must have worked together for the same salon, salon chain or recognised hairdressing body during the past 12 months (24 June 2016 - 23 June 2017).

• Entrants must have a regular client column. A regular client column is working in a salon for a minimum of one day per week. This may be checked.

HOW TO ENTER• Submit four photographs created by the team during the past 12 months (24 June 2016 - 23 June 2017).

• The overall size of each photograph must be 10” deep x 8” wide (portrait) unmounted. The size includes any borders. Photographs can be supplied on photographic paper purchased through a photographer or photographic outlet. Please do not use paper clips when submitting you entry as these can damage the photographs.

• Entries must be supplied with a ‘before’ picture of each model taken on the day of the shoot prior to any hair work, make-up or styling. There is no set size for the before shots but they should be no larger than 10” deep x 8” wide. Failure to provide these may result in disqualification.

• Entries must be supplied with an “after” shot of each model before any post-production/retouching.

• The team must also complete a standard questionnaire on an offical form, which can be obtained by calling Sharon Webb on 020 3841 7374 or email [email protected]. Attachments to this are NOT allowed. The name of the salon/any member of the salon or team must not appear anywhere in the information supplied.

• The organisers reserve the right to question any photographs which appear to be computer enhanced.

• Should you go through to the second round, you will need to supply a further four photographs, with ‘before’ shots. These will create a collection of eight photographs.

AVANT GARDE HAIRDRESSER OF THE YEARWHO CAN ENTER?• All qualified hairdressers who work in the UK in a commercial environment and have done so for a minimum of three

years excluding training may enter this category.

• Entrants must have a regular client column. A regular client column is working in a salon for a minimum of one day per week. This may be checked.

• Images entered into this category cannot be entered in any other category.

HOW TO ENTER• Submit four photographs created by you during the past 12 months (24 June 2016 - 23 June 2017).

• The overall size of each photograph must be 10” deep x 8” wide (portrait) unmounted. The size includes any borders. Photographs can be supplied on photographic paper purchased through a photographer or photographic outlet. Please do not use paper clips when submitting your entry as these can damage the photographs.

• Entries must be supplied with an unretouched Polaroid of the final look before any computer enhancement for each photograph. We do not require ‘before’ shots for this category.

• The organisers and judges reserve the right to question any photographs which appear to be computer enhanced, therefore supplying unretouched Polaroids is essential to the entry. If these are not supplied it could result in disqualification.

• Should you go through to the second round, you will need to supply a further four photographs, with unretouched Polaroids. These will create a collection of eight photographs.

THE PHOTOGRAPHIC SHOOT• The use of wigs, extensions, hairpieces or strands is permitted in all photographs.

• No more than two faces may appear in any one photograph.

• No more than four pictures can be used in two different categories (with the exception of Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year where the same eight images can be entered into a region).

• Photographs should demonstrate progressive styling with the emphasis on trend setting and innovation.

• Photographs may be black and white or colour.

• Professional photographers, make-up artists and stylists may be used.

• Images do not have to be head and shoulders, but they do need to focus on the hair, especially in terms of lighting and pose.

been running a regular client column for a maximum of two years as at Friday, 23 June 2017.

• Entrants to this category may not enter any other category.

• Entrants must have a regular client column. A regular client column is working in a salon for a minimum of one day per week. This may be checked.

HOW TO ENTER• Submit four photographs created by you during the past 12 months (24 June 2016 - 23 June 2017).

• The overall size of each photograph must be 10” deep x 8” wide (portrait) unmounted. The size includes any borders. Photographs can be supplied on photographic paper purchased through a photographer or photographic outlet. • No more than two faces may appear in any one photograph.

• No more than four pictures can be used in two different categories (with the exception of Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year where the same eight images can be entered into a region).

• Photographs may be black and white or colour and the hair should be commercial, wearable and reflect current trends.

• Professional photographers, make-up artists and stylists may be used.

• Images do not have to be head and shoulders, but they do need to focus on the hair, especially in terms of lighting and pose.

BEFORE SUBMISSION OF PHOTOGRAPHS• Label the back of each photograph with the entrant’s name,

salon name, salon address and the category entered.

If any of the above rules are not followed, your entry may be returned/disqualified.

SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL BRITISH COLOUR TECHNICIAN OF THE YEARWHO CAN ENTER?• All qualified hairdressers who work in the UK in a commercial environment and have done so for a minimum

of three years excluding training may enter this category.

• Entrants must have a regular client column within the region entered. A regular client column is working in a salon for a minimum of one day per week. This may be checked.

• Only Schwarzkopf Professional colour products can be used in this category. Schwarzkopf Professional will send you the complete collection of the newly launched Schwarzkopf Igora Colorworx (x8) products, complimentary for entrants to use in their colour entry. For further technical support and help sourcing the additional Schwarzkopf Professional Products you will need, please contact the Technical Advisory Department on 01442 278288 or 01442 278000. Your entry may be disqualified if it is felt that the end result has not been created using Schwarzkopf Professional colour products.

• The use of wigs, hairpieces, extensions or strands is strictly forbidden. ENTRANTS MUST SUPPLY BEFORE SHOTS OF ALL MODELS.

• Four 10" x 8" (portrait) full colour, high resolution photographs, of the hair before colouring.

• Four 10" x 8" (portrait) full colour, high resolution photographs, of the same model's hair after colouring.

• All photographs must be created by you during the past 12 months (25 June 2016 - 24 June 2017).

• Entries must be supplied with an “after” shot of each model before any post-production/retouching.

• For each look, a technical analysis of the model's hair prior to colouring must be submitted on the standard questionnaire outlining: texture, porosity, previous colour applications and other relevant information which should include:

– A breakdown of the colour products used and the reasons why they were chosen to create the end result.

– An insight into shade selection and the reasons for their usage, e.g.: eye colour, skin tone, texture enhancement.

– A comprehensive outline of the techniques used including terms such as foils, mesh, slicing, colour merging, colour panels, pre-lightening, pastel shading and tonal variation.

– A storyline of the concept behind the finished result and how the colouring technique complements the finished look.

• The before and after photographs, together with the A4 technical explanations (as detailed above) for each shot should be supplied in an A4 binder in the order in which they are to be displayed. As the photographs will be removed from the folders for judging please ensure that you label each 'before' photograph and 'after' photograph and corresponding piece of technical information with a number so that they can be clearly identified during the judging. Please do not glue your photographs into the folder as they will need to be removed for judging.

• Please ensure that nothing appears in the photographs or technical portfolio that could be used to identify the entrant i.e. branded gowns.

• Photographs should be supplied on photographic paper purchased through a photographer or photographic outlet.

• If any of the above rules are not followed, your entry may be returned / disqualified.

BRITISH HAIRDRESSER OF THE YEAR This category is by nomination only.

THE CLOSING DATE FOR THE BRITISH HAIRDRESSER OF THE YEAR CATEGORY IS: 5.00PM FRIDAY 1 SEPTEMBER 2017 • If nominated you will be informed by the end of June 2017 and you will be asked to submit a portfolio of eight exclusive

16” x 12” photographs.

• Entries must be supplied with a ‘before’ picture of each model taken on the day of the shoot prior to any hair work, make-up or styling. There is no set size for the before shots but they should be no larger than 10” deep x 8” wide. Failure to provide these may result in disqualification.

• Entries must be supplied with an “after” shot of each model before any post-production/retouching.

• The organisers reserve the right to question any photographs which appear to be computer enhanced.

• The portfolio of work submitted for British Hairdresser of the Year must be exclusive and must not have been seen by the media or other hairdressers prior to Monday 2 October 2017. This includes uploading onto any social networking sites, e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.

• The portfolio of work must not be published prior to 31 January 2018.

• Hairdressers Journal International has the exclusive first option on all British photographs.

• British nominees and their models must be at the Grosvenor House, A JW Marriott Hotel, from 11am on Monday 27 November 2017.

• Remember, it is the hair work, which is important in the photographs. Please keep this in mind when selecting the photographic paper to be used.

• No more than two faces may appear in any one photograph.

• No more than four pictures can be used in two different categories (with the exception of Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year where the same eight images can be entered into a region).

• With the exception of the Avant Garde, Men's and Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year categories, No more than four pictures in the collection of eight can contain wigs/extensions/hairpieces or stands.
