A Study On Employee Engagement At Sovereign, Bangalore

    1. INTRODUCTION

    1.1 INTRODUCTION TO E!"#O$EE EN%A%E!ENT

Engagement at work was conceptualized by Kahn(1990) as the harnessing of organization

members sel!es to their work roles" #n engagement$ people employ and e%press themsel!es

physically$ cogniti!ely$ and emotionally during role performances" &he second related construct

to engagement in emotional beha!ior is the notion of flow ad!anced by 'sikzentmihalyi (19)

defines flow as the holistic sensation that$ people feel when they act with total in!ol!ement"

*low is the state in which there is little distinction between the self and en!ironment" +hen

indi!iduals are in flow state little conscious control is necessary for their actions"

Employee Engagement has become a hot topic which is commanding the attention of an e!erincreasing number of companies" #t is somewhat surprising therefore that$ as yet$ there is no

generally accepted single definition of employee engagement" ,any companies and -.

managers are talking about it$ but !ery few define it" /o our purpose here is to pro!ide a succinct

re!iew of the research into employee engagement$ and to offer a range of definitions$ including

our own working definition" ne of the most comprehensi!e re!iews of the research is

    Employee Engagement2"

Employee engagement describes employees emotional and intellectual commitment to their

organization and its success" Engaged employees e%perience a compelling purpose and meaning

in their work and gi!e of their discrete effort to ad!ance the organizations ob3ecti!es"

"Engaged employees enjoy their work and are proud to tell people that they work for the

Company. They go the extra mile to help their customers and colleagues, and they want to stay

and develop a career with the Company. In the long run they are the real contriutors.".

#n other words$ how employee engagement impacts on customer satisfaction and profitability"

nd it shows management the importance of focusing on the factors which dri!e engagement:

in!estment in recruitment$ training and de!elopment$ and the technology that supports people$

together with performance management systems which properly link performance and pay"*or

other business leaders the statistics are not necessary" &o them the relationship between employee
