    BY JOHN KREROWICZ

    [email protected] considers the

skunk to be an unprotectedspecies that can be huntedand/or trapped year-roundby people with an appropri-ate license. Landowners oroccupants do not need a li-cense to hunt or trap a skunkif the animal is causing dam-age or is a nuisance on theirproperty.

But the law also says atrapped skunk legally cantbe released on a property, including state-owned land, without the owners permis-sion. That means letting it goon the trappers property oreuthanizing it, and that can

be restricted by municipali-ties ordinances on using re-arms, if the person wants toshoot the animal, said MartyJohnson, Wisconsin Depart-ment of Natural Resourceswildlife biologist for thisarea.

Johnson recommends hir-ing a trapper to capture and/or dispose of the animals.

    He also suggested:

Installing a metal screenor hard cloth over openingsof a porch or deck that theanimal uses but only afterit leaves for the evening.Sink the covering at least 14inches into the ground be-cause theyll try to dig underit. Make sure there are nobabies caught inside.

Placing an ammonia-soaked rag in their nestingspot to drive them away, butmake sure any babies areold enough to leave with the

    mother.

Considering use of amotion detector that triggersshooting water at the animal.

If skunks are tearing upthe yard, theyre probablylooking for grubs, which canbe killed with an insecticideor other treatment.

Guidelines for dealingwith nuisance wildlife areon the DNRs website athttp://dnr.wi.gov/topic/WildlifeHabitat/documents/nuswlguide.pdf. A list of areatrappers is online at http://

CASINO: Found by BIA to be best for Kenosha, tribeFrom Page A1

all 11 tribes, while the no-net-increase criterion wouldlikely require the Menomi-nee to close the casino onits reservation in Keshenabefore beginning to do busi-ness in Kenosha.

Gary Besaw, chairmanof the Menominee KenoshaGaming Authority, earlierthis year told a City Councilcommittee that insiders hadtold the tribe there was stillsome wiggle room withWalker on the consensusissue.

In Fridays news confer-ence, Besaw said Walkerneeds to make his decisionbased on whats best for theentire state.

We believe as he reviewsthe over 3,300 well-payingobs, over 1,400 constructionobs and over $35 million av-

erage per-year revenue sentto the state, that hell concurthat this indeed is just right

for the southeastern Wiscon-sin area, Besaw said.

Best for Kenosha, tribeThe federal decision was

based on a two-part deter-mination that the Bureau of Indian Affairs must considerwhen reviewing off-reserva-tion gambling applications:

That the gaming project is inthe best interests of the com-munity and the involved tribe.

Still, longtime skepticsremained skeptical on Fridaythat a casino is good forKenosha.

It will be an initial shot inthe arm, economically, saidKenosha County Supervisor

Terry Rose. There will be jobs in con-

struction if there is additionalconstruction there and therewill be additional jobs atthe casinom: he said. Theissue, though, in the longterm, is will it be good forthe community? Will we seemore crime, more hardship

in the community in terms of divorce, bankruptcy?

Waukau, on the otherhand, called Fridays an-nouncement a great day forour tribe and state.

It also paves the way to abrighter future for our verypoor Wisconsin tribe, Wau-kau said.
