Why Quality Search Engines do not support Z39.50

• Z39.50 is difficult to implement

• No control over what is presented to the user

• No high demand for Z39.50 access

Conclusions

• Quality Search Engines should adopt Z39.50 or SRW and OpenURLs

• SRW is still under discussion; owners of QSE’s must join the discussion now

• Libraries must convince publishers and aggregators of the above; issue in license negotations
