    he late David Pollock, an expert in this area, provided a good definition of third culture kids: A Third Cultured (TCK) is a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside of the parent

    ulture. The TCK frequently builds relationships to all of the cultures, while not having full ownership in anylthough elements from each culture may be assimilated into the TCKs life experience, the sense of belongingin relationship to others of similar background. Lisa McKay highlights that some strengths and benefits tha

    ur third culture kids develop over time include great flexibility and adaptability, a more mature perspective anddvanced cross-cultural communication and social skills. Three areas that are sometimes challenges for our thirulture children include unresolved feelings of grief and loss, sometimes feeling insecure on the inside andeople perceiving them as being arrogant because of their different life experiences.     t BIFS, we take this awareness of our students needs and endeavor to support them in a variety of ways. Firsnd foremost, we look to really get to know each student. Each students identity is important and they need tnow we care about them and are interested in who they are, where they have come from, what their passionre and what they aspire to become. Additionally, early in the transition, we give our students extra time andttention to settle in. It takes everyone a while to learn about a new place. We also try to make information

    ccessible and explicit so students can learn about rules, routines, activities and their surroundings. Makingiends is a big deal in school, so we try to provide opportunities to facilitate these social connections. A goodxample of this is our upcoming team building camps in the Middle School and High School. Finally, within ouurriculum we take the time to discuss the concepts of identity, differences, home and internationa

    mindedness to help all of our students explore and reflect on what these words mean for them.

    reat beginnings are a result of thoughtful planning and careful attentiono the building of relationships at the start of the year. Each year, ourchool community re-forms as a new community. Part of buildingelationships is seeking to understand each other and while we all have

    many differences that make each of us special and unique, we also haveome wonderful similarities. One of the similarities that most of ourudents and families share is being a transnational family. In international

    chools, we often refer to the children of transnational families as Thirdulture Kids or TCKs. Recently, Lisa McKay wrote an outstanding blogost on this topic that I would like to share as it beautifully summarizeshat we do at BIFS as we strive to be United in Our Diversity.

    FS is accepting applicants for substitute/cover teachers for ELC to High School classes. Substitutes are called ihen a teacher is absent and are paid hourly rate that are worked. Duties and responsibilities include teachingssons planned and prepared by the classroom teacher, managing classroom behavior, supervising studentutside the classroom, and other duties as required.

    eachers have been working hard to get to know their students, teach routines and expectations, and staruilding a classroom community. As they do so, they begin to assess childrens readiness levels, particularly i

    math, reading, and writing. Data regarding students who are returning to BIFS was passed on from last yeareacher to this years. We also begin to collect data on our new students, as well as check returning students foew progress. In reading, we assess using Running Records from Teachers College in New York. For writing, wssess using the 6+1 Traits writing samples which are scored on a rubric. Word work and basic spelling issessed using Words Their Way. In math, teachers focus their assessments on the concepts and skills that arovered in the first unit. All of this data is used to help differentiate the program to meet each childs learnineeds. And all of this is done while forming a strong classroom community, teaching students positive habits o

    have a middle school daughter and actually, my daughter has been a student in my school every year of hechool career except one. It is fun being at school and knowing what she is doing during the day. I know whehe has homework and I know when she has other things to do. This week we are both packing to go on theam building trips along with all students in grades 6-12. (I will be going with the 8th graders.)

    taying connected to your childs school and classes is an important way to ensure a positive school experiencor both parents and children. How do I keep informed about whats going on in the classroom? Teacherollaboratively plan and construct academic units to guide instruction in the classroom. Unit plans can bccessed by both parents and students through your ManageBac accounts. What does it all mean? How does l fit together? Youre in luck as you live with a knowledgeable source of information; your child. Take someme to regularly discuss your childs current unit and have them explain the terminology and focus for the unieachers also communicate upcoming assignments and assessments through ManageBac to support student organizing their time and preparing themselves appropriately.

    We are pleased to inform you of the options available to you and your child for this years athletic program. A the past, we have made commitments to compete in both the KISAC and SKAK conferences. As you havxperienced, these conferences offer our students opportunities to travel and compete locally as well as in Seound Jeju. The school has made a commitment to continue to subsidize some of the expense, but we musharge a fee of 400,000 Korean Won to all athletes to continue to cover all the expenses.

    ll KISAC tournaments will be two day events which may require flights to Jeju Island with overnights and mealsll transportation, meals and hotel costs will be covered by the fees.

    tudents interested in being part of a sports team will have to pay the fee before tryouts begin. Those no

    hosen for the team will receive a full refund on the fee. Those chosen for the team will be expected to attendl practices and competitions for the entire season, communicating with the coach if there are any conflictso refunds will be made after try-outs have been completed. There will be a few more games added as the
