When silica, soda and lime meet high heat, a beautiful alchemy occurs. The result — a taffy-like substance otherwise known as glass — has inspired creative minds for centuries.

Artists and craftsmen today often combine old-school tech-niques with new technology to create one-of-a-kind works of art for the home.

Internationally known sculptor Dale

Chihuly, based in Tacoma, Wash., has drawn crowds to a variety of public spaces with his outdoor “glass garden” installations of imaginative, other-worldly creations. (www.chihuly.com) You can fi nd some of his smaller pieces — glass baskets, wall art and table sculptures — at www.artnet.com.

In her Detroit studio, Nina Cambron fuses opaque, translucent and iridescent glass into wall panels resembling totems. The enduring quality of glass as an artistic medium is what drew her to it, she says.

“It’s just so rich, smooth, shiny and permanent,” she says. “Unlike painting or drawing, you can’t erase and rework an area. After it’s fi red, you’re done.” (www.ninacambron.com)

Gale Scott, a glass artist based in Worcester, Mass., uses a technique called “electroforming” that involves blowing glass into copper forms. The hot, soft glass meets the rigid metal and billows into ethereal shapes. (www.galescott.com)

New Yorker Peter Byrum displayed his paintings on glass at May’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair in Man-hattan. Using acrylics, he paints natural elements like leaf fronds and coral on layered sheets of tempered glass, sometimes half a dozen or more. The effect is three-dimensional, an organic, ephemeral diorama. (www.peterbynum.com)

Thor and Jennifer Bueno of Spruce Pine, N.C., are inspired by nature, and

Consider overseeding for winter color

With the cooler fall days, the time is approach-ing when lawns may be overseeded for winter

color. As our warm-season grasses

become dormant and turn brown , some residents elect to grow a cool-sea-son grass to provide color during the winter months.

Typically, ryegrass is the grass of choice for overseeding

home lawns. It is a good choice because it is readily available at local feed and garden stores. It’s reasonably priced, and the seed germinates quickly, offers rapid growth and has tolerance for sun or shade locations.

If seeded properly, ryegrass will provide a dense cover throughout the winter season, and when temperatures exceed 85 degrees, the grass will die out and disappear, leaving the warm-season grass to come in in its place.

Before invest ing in ryegrass, there are a couple of things to consider.

First, there is some prepara-tion that should be done to the lawn, to insure a thick, even stand. Realize also that the grass will need to be mowed occasionally, and even though winter temperatures are much more agreeable for mowing, some people prefer to have the winter off from this task.

During the germination period, it will be necessary to apply irrigation to get the grass started, although once it is established, little additional irrigation will be necessary unless we experience drought conditions.

To make this project manage-able, it may be desirable to select

Q: I read your column today, and as always,

found it to be very enlightening and inter-esting! I have some stemware that I am helping a friend sell, and I have had no luck when

trying to research them. They are “drop-dead gorgeous” Vaseline glass with an am-ethyst or purple

faceted bead or ball connecting the bowl to the stem. I have four sherbets and four waters. I am hoping you can tell me how old they are, who made them, if they are rare and their value.

I am enclosing a photo. As you can see, they glow well with just the fl ash from the camera. They are not under a black light. Thank you so much for your time.

— C.C., Internet

A: I think your decora-tive stemware was

made in America be-tween World Wars I and II. They would go well in an Art Deco interior. To discover the maker and pattern, contact Replace-ments Ltd. in Greensboro, N.C., at 800-REPLACE, or www.replacements.com. They might be a potential buyer as well. Good luck, and let us know what you discover.

■ ■ ■

Q: Please fi nd enclosed pictures of two items

which I would like information about. Thank you very much for anything you can tell me. The desk has been in my family for many years. Back in the 1950s, my

grandfather refi nished it.

The Bible was given to my great-great-un-cle and aunt by his mother on my uncle’s and aunt’s wedding day, June 18, 1888.

Perhaps you can give me an idea as to the value of these items. I also would like to know if there is someone in the area who repairs old Bibles, as the front cover is loose and needs repair. Thank you for your time and advice.

— R.J.M., Ocala

A: I think your slant-lid, lift-top desk was

made in the United States more than 100 years ago. It has a nice decorative look, and was probably made by a hobbyist. Potential dollar value is $100 to $200.

Family Bibles like the one you have were produced in massive quantities during the late 19th century. It would be nice to have it restored for future generations. Paul Sawyer in Daytona specializes in Bible restorations. The website is www.sawyerbinder.com. The phone number is 386-253-1161.

Q: We recently rediscov-ered a box of 16 mm

movies that belonged to my wife’s grandparents. They include 2-inch, 3¾-inch and 7-inch reels. I think some are home-made and some are movies or newsreels. One is titled “Lindy Does It and Peck’s Bad Boy,” written in pencil on the canister. One of the reels starts with “The First Offi cially Released Picture Record Our Part in the World War Com-piled By Military Ex-perts.” Another starts with “Especially released by the War Department to the Eastman Kodak Company for the Second AEF.”

— F.F., Internet

A: I was not able to fi nd any specifi c collector

interest in your 16 mm movies, although the times are changing relative to interest in this subject matter. Manion’s International Auction Company specializes in military memorabilia. I suggest you contact them at www.manions.com.

Q: In light of all the excitement about the

new royal baby, I was wondering if there is any collector interest in a paper doll book I bought in 1982 titled, “Chuck &

Di Have a Baby.” It was created by John

Boswell, Patty Brown and Will Elder, and published by Simon and

Shuster in 1982. The 9-by-12-inch

paperback is in excellent condition except that the store where I bought it wrote the number “14” on the cover on Chuck’s under-shirt. There are sporty, formal, including their wedding outfi ts, and royal clothes, along with a baby nursery and baby and baby carriage, perambu-lator to Chuck and Di.

— J.C.G., Ocala

A: Currently, there is very little interest in

your book. Potential dollar value is $15 to $25.

John Sikorski is an Ocala antiques dealer. He hosts a call-in radio show, “Sikorski’s Attic,’’ on WUFT-FM (89.1 FM). It can be heard each Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. Send your questions to Sikorski’s Attic, c/o The Ocala Star-Banner, 2121 SW 19th Ave. Road, Ocala, FL 34471-7752, or email [email protected].

GLASS: The result looks like a rock scoured by the action of a swift current over time

form hot glass into shapes evoking water-washed rocks or molecular structures.

“Walking along a river, light bounces across the water’s surface,” says Jennifer Bueno.

Each sculpture is made by blowing and shaping molten glass into “peb-bles.” The colors come from adding glass shards or powders. The piece is then baked to hardness, sandblasted and given a protective luster; the result looks remarkably like a rock scoured by the action of a swift current over time.

In another series, the pebble shapes are made out of the mirrored material known as mercury glass.

“In its liquid state, glass glows with intense heat and moves slowly, as if self-propelled,” notes Bueno. “Mercury glass has the appearance of liquid metal, undulating and three-dimensional.”

The fi nished glass resembles electrons, particles, even sound waves. (www.buenoglass.com)

At Wayfair.com, you’ll

fi nd photographs printed on the back of glass panels from Platin Art. Bamboo stems, fl owers, and black-and-white city skylines seem to fl oat, making for arresting wall art, particularly for large expanses of wall space. (www.wayfair.com )

At LaylaGrayce.com, the Worlds Away Marina Ice Glass collection of furniture has a Hollywood Regency vibe, cool and elegant. Nightstands, chests and other pieces are clad in a milky, translucent glass. (www.laylagrayce.com)

If you’re interested in acquiring art glass, ArtfulHome.com has an extensive collection from North American artists at a range of prices. (www.artfulhome.com)

If stained glass intrigues you, there are tutorials on YouTube. DelphiGlass.com offers stained-glass supplies, kits and tips for beginners. (www.delphi-glass.com)

You also can learn more about the history, art and science of glass at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, N.Y. Try your hand at glassmaking in one of the museum’s many classes. (www.cmog.org)

What Does Government Shutdown Mean for Real Estate Transactions?

www.OMCAR.com

Congress has failed to approve the Continuing Resolution(CR) providing funding fro mostgovernment operations. Until legislation providing funding is signed into law, many officesand programs of the federal government are now shut down. The good news is some of theprograms that impact federal housing and mortgage programs will continue to operate. Hereis brief update:

IRS(Internal Revenue) & SSA(Social Security)- both are closed and suspending all processingof forms. However many loan originators including Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae haveadopted relaxed provisions allowing closings but subject to tax transcripts verification.

FHA(Federal Housing Admin) & VA(Veterans Affairs)- FHA will continue to endorse new loansfor single family homes and maintain operational activities, however you can expect somedelays with FHA processing, due to short staffing and other delays.

Flood Insurance- Federal Emergency Management Agency(FEMA) confirmed the programwill not be impacted during shutdown.

Rural Housing Programs- essential personnel do not include field office staff who typicallyissue conditional commitments, loan note guarantees and modification approvals. Basicallythey are shut down.

Q: Ed, we recently moved and our new kitchen

has a nice island area with a natural stone counter-top, but no sink! We have a basement under the kitchen, so I guess to save counter space or money the sink was never installed. We really want the sink. Is this a compli-cated project? Thanks. Your information can help us prepare for this job.

— Fred, Iowa

A: First, the good news is that you do have

access under the island area. If you were on a concrete slab, that could have been a deal-breaker. Moving forward, it’s a good idea to meet with your local building inspector before you start the project. This way, any necessary permits can be taken out.

Installing a new sink in your existing kitchen island can be a little complicated and could involve a few contractors. Basically, it may break down like this:

1. The contractor needs to fi nd or create an open pocket area in the cabinet base large enough for the

sink and plumbing to be installed.

2. A countertop stone-cutter can then cut out a sink hole over the pocket area where

a “drop-in” style of sink can be installed.

3. The plumber can drill through the cabinet base and fl oor to run water and drain lines into the pocket area to connect the sink and faucet.

Finally, prepare your patience and budget ahead of time, so that you don’t end up “stranded” on your kitchen island because of poor planning.

Master Contractor/Plumber Ed Del Grande is known internationally as the author of the book “Ed Del Grande’s House Call” and for hosting TV shows on Scripps Net-works and HGTVPro.com. For information, visit eddelgrande.com or write [email protected]. Always consult local contractors and codes.

Scripps Howard News Service

Well, this year we have seen some interesting trends in interior design.

Let’s review some of them to see where our homes stand in comparison.

A relaxed look through-out the house is popular. Every room in the house should be a space that you can actually live in, which means no ultra-formal rooms with a “don’t touch” atmosphere.

Gilded glass is a fi nish where glass is gilded with gold or metal leaf on the back. Even though simplic-ity is popular, a little bit of glamour is always wel-come.

Brass — including antique brass — has had a comeback in hardware such as faucets and knobs.

Wood fl ooring always is popular . The bleached fl oor — that is, lighter wood — has made its mark this year. That same bleached-wood look has been popular as a treat-ment for kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

What about color? Well, blue has been strong this year in all aspects of interior design, from wall

colors to upholstery to accesso-ries. Navy and royal blue have been making quite an appearance this year. But blue isn’t the

only popular color. Emerald green, named color of the year by Pantone, also has been a hit in interior design.

Last year’s pattern was all about fl owers; this year has been all about stripes and geometrics. I wonder what next year will bring? The geometrics this year have included angles and diagonals, and this trend has been seen in fabric designs as well as wallpa-per designs. I’ve even seen geometrics papered onto ceilings. That can get dizzying in some cases, but to each his own, right?

only the front lawn for overseeding. Let the backyard and other lawn areas lie dormant.

If you decide to pursue this, you will have a choice of either annual ryegrass or perennial ryegrass. Annual ryegrass is a coarse-textured grass with leaves measuring 5 mm to 7 mm wide. Leaves are medium-green in color, and the seed is approximately one-third the price of perennial ryegrass. Perennial ryegrass is a much darker color, and leaves are fi ner textured, measuring 2 mm to 4 mm wide. While it is more expensive, it is more

tolerant of drought and warm temperatures. It is best to wait to pursue this project until daytime temperatures are consis-tently in the low- to mid-70s. When seeds are sown and high tempera-tures follow, seeding germination is reduced, which will affect the thickness of the stand. So it is important to wait until temperatures are right to initiate the project.

Begin the preparation process by raking the grass thoroughly to remove all debris. Next, cut the grass slightly shorter than normal and bag the clippings; the object here is to give the seed as much opportunity

as possible to fall on soil. Consider a fi nal raking to remove any additional material and further loosen the soil. If your lawn has a heavy thatch layer, you may decide to forego overseeding this year and address the thatch problem in the spring using a vertical mower or a power rake. Thatch is a loose, inter-mingled organic layer of dead and living shoots, stems and roots that develops between the zone of green vegetation and the soil surface. Thatch build-up begins when turf produces organic debris faster than it can be broken down.

If you have thatch, and

determine you want to overseed this year, it will be necessary to double the recommended seeding rate.

Once the seedbed is prepared, seed at a rate of 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet of lawn using a broadcast spreader. To establish a uniform stand, sow half the seed by walking in one direction and the other half by walk-ing at right angles to the fi rst. After seeding, rake the ground with a stiff broom to ensure seed is not trapped in the grass layer.

The second important element in successfully establishing the stand is watering. Seeds will

continue to sit without moisture, so proper irrigation is critical to success. Apply a light irrigation (10 – 20 min-utes) once or twice a day until the seed has germi-nated, usually in 7 to 10 days.

Water daily over the next 2 to 3 weeks, applying ¼-inch daily. Be careful not to overwater. Once established, water infre-quently as needed to keep grass from wilting.

Infrequent mowing will be required during the season. Mowing should begin when the overseed-ed grass is about 1 to 2 inches above the perma-nent grass. When spring arrives in March, discour-

age the ryegrass by mowing the grass each week to the recommended height for your turf variety.

As temperatures warm, the ryegrass will recede and the permanent grass will assert itself to grow in place of the rye.

When properly installed and maintained, winter ryegrass provides a pleasant boost to the winter landscape. While it isn’t for everyone, it may have merit to enhance the “curb appeal” areas of your lawn.

HOLMES: Winter ryegrass provides pleasant boost to winter landscapeContinued from 4H

Scripps Howard News Service

Q: I am trying to decide whether to use pres-

sure-treated decking or composite as a replace-ment for my deck, which is 11 years old. I understand Rust-Oleum has a product that you use as a preserva-tive/semi-transparent stain, which is applied a year after the deck is installed, with a lifespan of 10 years. I also understand that pressure-treated wood varies in quality. How would I know which is the best?

A: In my opinion, there is nothing better than a

quality treated wood or natural wood product when building a deck. If you’re looking at a less-expensive composite material, you should be aware that many of the composites on the market today simply do not withstand the elements as

well as a wood deck. What I have found is that composites fade and have to be maintained using harsh chemicals

and lots of scrubbing. A wood deck, on the other hand, can be treated using stains or sealants, which are applied with a roller, brush or sprayer and a lot less labor.

Another issue I have found is that composite materials do not have the structural stability of wood. Typical fl oor joists for a wood deck are set 16 inches on center and, depending on the length of the joists, will hold a 40-pound live load .

A composite joist set 12 inches on center might bow

under its own weight before you even apply the decking. With composites that contain wood fi bers, mold has become an issue that most manufacturers disclaim in their warranty. You may see moss on some wood decks that have been stained or sealed, but I have never heard of mold being a problem with a wood deck.

With wood there is very little expansion and contraction of the materi-als, but some composites can expand or contract by as much as 2 to 3 inches. This is important to know when designing and installing joists, decking and fasteners.

What kind of wood should you use? Most pressure-treated lumber is either pine or fi r. Because the pine and fi r are not “old-growth” lumber, the grains in the wood are

widely separated and the lumber tends to twist or bend when exposed to the weather. Sealing the wood at the time of installation will reduce the twisting, splitting and cupping of the decking.

Redwood and cedar are two types of wood that can be exposed to the weather without being treated and tend to remain stable in all seasons. I would recom-mend using pressure-treat-ed lumber for your deck, and as the seasons go by you can replace any of the decking boards that succumb to the weather. Treat the wood as recom-mended using any stain or sealer of your choice.

Quality treated wood is best for building a deck Make some ghostly outdoor draperies for Halloween Home & Garden Television

Add a spooky touch to your front porch this Halloween with billowing,

tattered draperies made from budget-friendly cheesecloth. MATERIALS NEEDED:

Several yards of cheesecloth

¼-inch-thick 2-by-4 poplar strips

Staple gun and 9/16-inch staples

Scissors or utility knifeTape measureBucketBags of black teaHot waterMitre box and saw

CUT POPLAR STRIPSAND CHEESECLOTH:

Use a tape measure to determine each panel’s height and width, then cut fabric. Use a mitre box and saw to cut poplar

strips to the same width as fabric. TEA-STAIN FABRIC:

Boil water, then pour into bucket and add bags of black tea. Soak cheesecloth in bucket overnight so its white tone takes on an aged effect. Remove cheese-cloth from bucket and drape over a bannister, fence or door so it can dry. HANG AND TATTER FABRIC:

Once dry, staple cheesecloth panels to poplar strips, then staple poplar to porch’s over-hang. To create a tattered effect, cut random holes with scissors or a utility knife, then pull the fabric to create runs.

Simon Cowell is quietly looking for a buyer for his Beverly Hills trophy

house, marketing it out-side the Multiple Listing Service.

Cowell, who paid $15.5 million for the gated estate, is asking $20 million, according to local real estate agents.

He bought the Trousdale Estates-area house two years ago from Randy Phillips of concert-promo-tion powerhouse AEG Live in an off-market deal.

Phillips has a passion for restoring midcentury homes and had planned to move into the 1966 Hal Levitt-designed showcase

with work completed.

When approached about selling the home, Phillips decided to

test the water. “I came up with a price that I didn’t think anyone would match or meet,” he told the Los Angeles Times last year. “So I didn’t think I was in trouble of losing my house.”

The two-story house, which sits on more than half an acre with a swimming pool, has four bedrooms, six bathrooms and 7,265 square feet of living space, public

records show. Features include city views, an outdoor entertainment area, a screening room and a formal dining room with walls of glass.

Cowell, 53, is known to television audiences for his role as a music judge on shows including “The X Factor,” “American Idol” and “Britain’s Got Talent.” The band One Direction recently renewed with his Syco record label.

James Van Der Beek has listed a house in the heart of Valley Village for $1.25 million.

The single-family home was an income property, said Kofi Nartey of the Agency, who shares the

listing with Craig Knizek of the same offi ce. The former “Dawson’s Creek” star is selling to focus on the upcoming comedy series “Friends With Better Lives.”

The 3,017-square-foot house, built in 1936, features a great room with vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, four bedrooms and three bathrooms. French doors off the master suite overlook a swimming pool.

Van Der Beek, 36, will be in the upcoming movie “Labor Day.” He was a regular this year and last on “Don’t Trust the B _ in Apartment 23.”

He paid $1.26 million for the house in 2005 and had

been leasing it out for nearly $5,000 a month, according to the MLS.
